It was so brilliant. The brain-teasing gameplay, the amazing story, the hilarious, heartfelt characters that felt so full of life. This is what gaming should be. This game was a masterpiece.
Just beat the SP about an hour ago, and yeah, THIS.
Honestly the
recordings of Cave & Caroline and GLaDOStato's subtle recognition that part of her WAS Caroline
was one of the most moving moments I've had in gaming. Valve has really done something amazing here.
I was absolutely floored by this part.
This is far and away the best game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Just so many things coming together to make such an excellent experience, the way Valve has managed to put this thing together is just astounding.
I was replaying the very first section, and noted this.
All the relaxation chambers around Chells had this label on them, with those two dates. The various characteristics were different on each one however.

The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
I beat it in 6 hours. But I am not sure how much of that was listening to the the clever writing and looking around for easter eggs.
The ending is kind of what I expected given the whole moon rock context set earlier in the game, but I hope we can get more Wheatley in future Valve games, I love that guy.
Also, SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE

1st Runthrough ~ 8 hours.
2nd Speed Run (No stops, no looking around, just listening to the Characters) ~ 3.8 hours
Also, I highly highly recommend that people read the 27 page comic in the Extras section. It explains a LOT about the interlude between P1 and P2, and gives a fantastic amount of exposition. Additionally, it is absurdly well written, even more ridiculously well drawn.
Honestly, I'm glad where they took the portal story. They made a pretty clear declaration that they will not be mixing their IP's beyond casual reference. If Half-Life had to contend with a Gravoportal gun, things would just get absurd. Not to mention it would severely hurt Half Life's storytelling to be confined indoors for so much time to achieve portalable surfaces. Let Half Life have the Gravity Gun, Portal gets the Portal gun.
On a different note, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I'm nearly always pissed at intentional cliff-hangers that set themselves up for terrible sequels. This game polished itself off quite nicely by leaving her in a field. I'm not sure where a Portal 3 would pick up. I want one though. Badly. Really badly.

Look, we're just throwing science against the wall here, tryin' to see what sticks.
If you're not digging for the secret stuff/achievements and plow thought it, 5/6 hours is pretty standard. The game just doesn't really pull out the trickier puzzles that the first had. My brother had the best explanation in that Valve continuously introduced new elements throughout, so puzzles would never get too hard before things reset to an intro test with new stuff.
I don't find that to be a problem in a vacuum, but Portal 2 has no challenges or advanced maps. If single player gets any content added, that's probably going to be it.

For the record, rumors flying around from Kotaku and other places say that a developer's kit is being released sometime in the future that will allow for modding and user-generated puzzles.
Along with the Multi-player mode ideas others brought up about 5 pages back, I'd be a happy camper.
Comments about Wheatley Act 3
Enjoyed honest, innocent Wheatley in Act 1
Loved GLaDOS in Acts 1, 2, and 3
Loved Cave Johnson in Act 2 LOATHED Wheatley in Act 3. I loved him my first playthrough, was getting tired of him second, but on my third playthrough, his personality grates on me.
Also, whoever is responsible to for doing the emotional movement responses for GLaDOS/Wheatley while they're in the machine, they are fantastic. The inflections conveyed robotic emotions perfectly.
Eh, modding is fantastic, but that's no excuse for leaving out something that was even in the "proof-of-concept" game.
I hope modders can do some fantastic stuff for co-op. The item store is incredibly questionable right now. It makes sense in TF2, which has near-infinite replay value. Portal 2, by nature of puzzle games, demands on a constant stream of content to keep it going. To buy something right now shows faith that Valve will support the game at a reasonable pace in the future.

We as a community need to build that mode. Like, that shit seriously needs to happen. I'm in for texturing/modeling whatever additional things we need for it.

hopefully the content flows a bit better than their previous forays into the idea of constant content (i'm looking at you left 4 dead (although the mutations idea was neat))
Portal 1 had a dev kit and nothing good ever came out of it.
Anyone who's dicked around with the source engine knows what a rat's nest that is. Portal 2 is built with a different kit, so, hopefully it will be easier this time around. As far as I've heard, it's pretty much a nifty crossover between LegoStudio, ROBOTStudio, but done within the updated PortalSource engine.

Unfortunately, the only problem I see with a Multiplayer, MultiPortalGun Mode, is that the assets might not be in place. I can understand tweaking the game to handle 8-10 portals at a time, but beyond that, I'm not sure what the processing power necessary for those view vectors would be. If it's built into the system however, and the RAM can handle it, I'm freaking all for it.
Also: The Opera. #1 Reason Video Games should be eligible for mainstream media awards.

Well to each his own, but I had far more trouble with a handful of the puzzles in P2 than I ever did in P1. Some of the repulsion gel tests and a few Chapter 8 tests come to mind.
A lot of areas in Chapter 6, especially the one where you had to go up that huge huge tunnel, frustrated the hell out of me.

I thought the later puzzles especially the ones in Chapter 8 were pretty hard and I really enjoyed solving them, my only complaint is that it took so long building to that difficulty.
I felt it had some harder puzzles than Portal 1 but overall was easier. It's hard to judge for me because I've played through Portal 1 so many times I can't remember what I had trouble with initially.
This game really just makes me want Episode 3 even more now, god I try to avoid hype for that series.
Same. I get the feeling they're going to announce something at E3 this year, but that's probably just because I want it so badly. Though it has been forever and it would be almost cruel to not give even the slightest hint at this point. If there's a Valve panel and they just talk about DotA 2 people will boo.
One of the first repulsion gel tests took me what seemed like for-fucking-ever to do. Also one of the very early 'normal' tests in Chapter 3. But overall I'm very pleased with the difficulty in the main game. I just hope they release challenge levels soon.

I appreciated that the first thing GLaDOS did when she got her body back was murder Caroline.

Not really a spoiler, but an Aperture poster, informs the user that Repulsion Gel was originally marketed as a Dietetic Jelly. It was ingested, would coat the user's stomach, and would cause future food consumption to bounce around in the stomach until it attained enough velocity to eject itself back up the throat and out the mouth.
Aperture Science goes on to state that for reasons beyond explanation, the product was pulled.
Just finished the single-player and I have to say I had an absolute blast.
I would give this game a solid 9.5/10. The story was great and the writing was hilarious. My only wish is that it was a little harder. Even with the new mechanics added in, it still felt like I had learned all the "tricks" for each puzzle from Portal 1.
[Edit] Forgot to mention, the ending was also brilliant. Who knew the portal gun had such fantastic range? :P
I'm at the point in Chapter 9 where the repulsion tube crashes through the walkway and drops gel on the walkway itself and the wall but wither I'm either timing it wrong or doing something wrong cause I'm not making the jump to the opposite catwalk. what the hell am i missing?
I'm at the point in Chapter 8 where the repulsion tube crashes through the walkway and drops gel on the walkway itself and the wall but wither I'm either timing it wrong or doing something wrong cause I'm not making the jump to the opposite catwalk. what the hell am i missing?
Can you screenshot this, I can't recall the puzzle specifically.

Shoot a portal on your end and on the other. If I'm thinking of the right one and it's the white gel.

Something to shit bricks over:
Caroline \c(a)-roli-ne, car(o)-line\ as a girl's name is pronounced KARE-a-line, KARE-a-lin. It is of Old German origin, and the meaning of Caroline is "free man".
I wouldn't put much trust in an online baby name website. Especially considering literally every single website has its own presumably horse shit etymology and only one of them I can see mentions "free man".
wait does this mean that aperture is in Michigan not Ohio like the first game implied?
Where was that implied in the first game?
Also, unrelated Chapter 5 Spoilers:
I'm really happy that the "Chell was an Aperture employee's daughter who was trapped in the facility on take your daughter to work day" they was correct. What's sad is that I completely missed her name even though I was combing the experiment boards for it.
Shame on the Ratman for bumping a pre-teen girl above his name on the test subject priority list.
Wait, what?
I finished the game, but... what?
Her name is on one of the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day science fair projects with "special ingredient from Dad's work" written under the materials. Screenshots were posted earlier in the thread:
Chell is the only one who's last name is shown as Redacted on the big list of test subjects and she is somehow able to get her dad to bring home science projects from the Aperture labs, she has a big ol DO NOT SUBJECT TO TESTING on her data sheet, and she is also listed as one to never give up.
Now I'm not jumping to any conclusions but they made it pretty clear that normal folks at Aperture don't get viewed as very important so there is no way a normal guy is gonna be able to take home super growth chemicals. Though I can think of one guy though who would be able to take stuff home.
A guy who himself was also more important then the peons going through testing. A pretty damn charismatic guy who also was one to never give up. A guy who probably would have adopted a kid to make him look more awesome/philanthropic in the eyes of others. A guy who probably would have been very interested in having an heir. Hmm I wonder who that guy could be...
So... spoilery? I guess. Yes.
*Chell to GlaDOS* Momma?
I also honestly don't think GlaDOS actually deleted Caroline, she's quite the scheming... woman? So it makes sense that she would keep up the act just to save face. Think about it really, really hard. If GlaDOS had really lost her 'conscience' Chell would have been jackhammered into the elevator wall by those first four turrets.
Morgan Freeman's last name is Freeman. His latest movie involves dolphins. Dolphins swim in the water, which is also where the Borealis floats. Dolphins in Episode 3?????
