Laptop screen not as bright as it should be?

I received an HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile workstation for use with school and my degree and I'm having a fairly odd problem I'm wondering if anyone has ran into before.

The brightness of the screen doesn't seem to be "unlocked" to as bright as it should be. For instance, if I set the screen to maximum brightness and then begin to step down using either the function keys, in-OS software or WinKey+X windows 7 laptop management area, the screen stops getting dimmer at roughly 50-60% of max. Anything below that and the screen doesn't change a bit.

Going back up and it gets brighter again to a certain point, however it is still somewhat dim. I'm sure it can go brighter than this, as occasionally (such as during bootup or even quickly moving the brightness bar up and down) I get random flashes of ultra brightness which is where I expect the screen to be.

I've installed the HP Quick Launch software to make the function keys work, but adjustments with that do nothing.

Halp me H/A-wan kenobi, you are my only hope.

    Nevermind! This can be deleted!

Went into BIOS and found an "Ambient Light Sensor" was somehow running on the board. Killed that badboy and the screen is acting like a normal laptop screen now.
