Just finished the story mode a few minutes ago - I absolutely loved it, but seriously...
Screw the Raiden vs. Shao Kahn fight. Took me forever to figure out a way to finally win by spamming teleports, torpedos, and lightning balls.
Absolutely having a blast with this game and haven't even played a regular ladder match or really even learned any characters yet other than via the story mode.
I think challenge tower is next.
There is more content in the ladder than the story mode. They have basically crammed in every single secret from MK 1 and MK2 into this game. I'm fairly confident the hidden fight from MK3 is also there as well.
As someone who poured hundreds of hours into the old arcade machines to get to Reptile and Smoke, this new MK has had me entertained for a solid week now.
So entertained, in fact, that I still have not touched portal 2.
Messed around with Ermac more. Liking him a lot. I can do a basic combo of BP, FP, BP, 24FP, j.BK, 24BK, 46FP. Feels good flipping people around all psychic like. Now to try and learn something more damaging.
I did Johnny cage's story in story mode. I'm on Sonya but took a break. Can anyone give a list of the characters in story mode as they appear? I'd like to actually learn how to play them before jumping into each one -_-
there are hidden characters unlocked in story mode and merely reading their names would spoil huge portions of the story. You sure you want a list?

He can't practice anyone that isn't unlocked before you get to them in the story mode. You can omit them from the list.

I wouldn't mind either way. I'm actually slightly amused by the fact that people care that much about spoilers in this This is my first MK so I don't have nearly the reverence I guess for the MK 'story'.
I kind of figured you might not care. That was just for the safe side. Chances are if you've been paying attention to the game at all they were already spoiled for you anyway. I can give you a short list of whose in the story mode:
Everyone who is a good guy + Cyrax and Scorpion ... who are sort of good guys.
but I sure as hell don't remember what order they go in.

you're only on the second chapter man. The story gets crazy involved and... well, just post when you finish the game and tell me if you still didn't care about the story.

I'm sure the story is fun and I'll enjoy it but it's not something I'd be upset about if RIGHT NOW someone just spoiled it for me. I just don't have that sort of reverence for the source material or anything. It'd be like if someone spoiled the Resident Evil movies before I saw them.

Thx Barrabas.
But it has nothing to do with source material. The spoilers, in fact, are parts which are not a part of the source material. You're playing the source material, in fact. You'll learn the stories for several characters, and dramatic moments will be ruined - stuff which no one who played the old games knew about.

Noob's first fatality is one of the most horrific things I've seen in a fighting game since Eternal Champions. Kung Lao's hat thing is pretty similar, but there's just a level of suffering involved with Noob's version that sends a chill through me.
I'm also convinced that Mileena has some kind of Tarkatan STD. It burns when I piss.
That's what I get for drinking too many space beers.
How does he end up with no blood on him after that?
And are there combo tutorials (preferably video) somewhere for more extensive juggles? I am not very creative apparently. I was trying to work with noob saibot, but I think christopher walk...er smoke has become my dude. I was excited when I realized I could A --> (down) X --> smoke bomb and try and juggle from there but I can't manage to time anything more than an uppercut (and even that only occasionally) against people online.
$120 for the arcade stick? Lame, guess I am sticking with the 360 controller for a while :L
Fucking unskippable cutscenes. I finished Lui Kang's story... Started Jax's, and entered the next fight. When I shut off the game I had to watch the final cutscene again...

Well, one of them I suppose is sort of a neat surprise but the other you see hanging around within the first few minutes.
Couldn't... stop... playing ..... m..mortal.. kombat...
...Stryker.. to awesome... to stop.... (spread 'em!)
... played.. for 10 hours.. straight... sleep... required now...
I've surprisingly put the most time into Cyrax so far. When I first played MK3, the second character I ever played was Cyrax (first was, of course, sub zero) but I kinda gave up on him around UMK3 and never returned.
It's his animation in this game. His
human form
has superb animation, and it makes him a joy to play. That, and I figured out that his rag-doll move can go through most projectiles, and rather than a one hit counter, I can turn it into a two hit counter.
All this chatter broke me down and I picked this up for 360. I'm dachishbudoka on Live, add me! I'm sure I'll be terrible.
So can I quit out of single player and continue where I left off? I assume so but I didn't see any save options. I figured it was doing it automatically but didn't want to quit out and risk having to restart.
Messed around with Ermac more. Liking him a lot. I can do a basic combo of BP, FP, BP, 24FP, j.BK, 24BK, 46FP. Feels good flipping people around all psychic like. Now to try and learn something more damaging.
An easy to pull off basic combo with Ermac is the [Back + Sq. x2, Back, Down, Sq.] which is basically his little windmill punches combo'd to his psychic slam for a pop up and then you can do whatever you like with them in the air. If you time it well you can teleport into the opponent while popped up.
How to you get the fatality tutorial to teach you the second fatalities... if it can...
I've not figured out a way to get it to show you how to do the alt. fatalities but I know for certain you can do them. I don't think you can do babalities in the tutorial mode though.
Edit Also, really mad that the PSN is still down. Kotaku report said it could be days before it's fixed too.

Yeah that's what my combo does except starting with a different ground combo. psychic slam, jump kick, teleport punch, psychic throw (not sure if that's the name of the last move but it's the one where he tosses them across the screen). I also found I can end with his x-ray in place of the psychic throw.
edit: just realized I stupidly didn't have auto block on. The combo I had earlier only really works if I drop the second BP in it. Still does 31% and is super easy.
First combo i tried getting down is the jump forward FP, BP, BP, Lift, Jump kick, teleport punch, dash forward, BP, BP, Psychich throw for something like 46% damage.
The hardest part is really the dash BP, BP. Also, the ground combo needs to be done quick so you can't really hit confirm, and the psychic lift has some recovery to it. I might switch the ground part to back+FP, FP, BK into lift, or into psychic throw if blocked, since it's pretty safe.
I will be on for the next 30-45 minutes or so, doing challenge towers and such. If you are on 360 and want a match, please add and message me. I've played like one match against a person, not nearly enough.

Oh thanks. Didn't think to use a dash forward after the teleport punch for a little extra damage. Can you replace the second psychic lift with x-ray for a ton of damage or does it only work after the teleport punch? I know if you do it after the teleport punch you'll get 54%, but it'd be fun to see if you can bring that into the 60's.

This is precisely why the new MK is so awesome. The amount of customization and creativity that goes into these combos is outstanding. It's all so fluid. It reminds me of MK2 crossed with Killer Instinct.

Thanks for reminding me we need a new one of those.
Got my copy. Sheeva all the way, even though she is quite terrible: her x-ray is decent, but she's super slow as balls, has limited combo potential, and relies heavily on gimmicks. Still getting used to parts of the game, but my stick setup works perfectly. Going to be while before the first tournament anyway, so I've got time to build on things.
I'll have to slog through story mode now to unlock those characters. At least I've been told that beating it on hard will give me enough koins to unlock everything I want.
269 - Beat three Shao Khans. I don't know if your life bar refills after each.
275 - Beat three Goros with one life bar.
Also, there's got to be something I did, but when I was doing the CT tonight every character I played as was wearing their 2nd player color clothing. Not alt costume, just the alt color of the primary costume. Not sure what I did to make it do that.

Eh, even on normal I was able to pick up all the alt costumes and second fatalities.
So is there a way to unlock the "exclusive" costumes, or where they really exclusive?
A few people who got the game early unlocked some of the classic costumes by simply purchasing the concept art in the Krypt. (which is how you unlock the normal alternate costumes) However that was fixed in the day one patch. (I don't know if that removed the costumes from those who got them by mistake though)
So far though, no way I can tell to get the classic costumes unless you had a preorder bonus. The content is definitely on the disc though and I'm pretty sure not just the ninjas have classic costumes because... (very mild spoiler) when...
when you fight Noob by activating his secret fight in arcade, I think he's technically in classic attire because he's much darker than normal.

I've seen some videos floating around of Goro/Kintaro/Shao Khan getting babalitied. How the hell does that work?

Yeah it's pretty weird because Goro and Kintaro both rip opponents to shreds in their fatalities and it does cover them in blood.

Now we know how to fight classic Jade, yay! Also, great to see that projectiles pass right through her, just like in MK2.
