I dislike the numbers because it's backwards from every other fighting game I play which use numbers to specify direction and letters for the attacks (and that's assuming they aren't just avoiding numbers entirely and just using QCF, HCB, etc.).
Not enough to really care too much. Though I imagine for this game if I was writing a button sequence I'd probably just use lower and uppercase letters to specify something (ie. d,f+FK) just so the greatest amount of people would understand it with the least amount of effort. I don't foresee me writing a button sequence very often though.
I've never seen numbers indicate the type of button but I have seen it used for directional input and movement (see numpad inputs). I think I remember numbers used for (I think) Virtua Fighter back in the day but I might be wrong.

VF only had three buttons, so I don't recall us ever using numbers to denote them. P, K, G isn't too hard.
Numbers seemed only very useful for Tekken because doing stuff like FK takes longer + there's not really any fireball motions in 3-d fighters.

There is a reason its used... once you get into crazy combo's the letters just confuse you and slow you down
I don't understand this statement at all... How would the letters confuse you if they stand for EXACTLY what they are typed. Instead of using numbers that you have to memorize what they mean.

Naw, Virtua Fighter has always used p, k, g for the buttons and usually f, b, u, d for directions. It wasn't a problem for them, since nothing overlapped. Soulcalibur used numpad numbers for directions because the buttons overlapped otherwise (there's a B button). Tekken started using the numbers for buttons, but that's only in the west; in Japan and I think Korea as well, they use lp, rp, lk, rk, and numpad notations for directions.
Mortal Kombat has been using Tekken notations since UMK3. There's been talk about changing it now and then, usually when a new game comes out and new people are coming in and they're used to non-Tekken notations, but the Mortal Kombat played are used to 1, 2, 3, and 4, and since Mortal Kombat doesn't use diagonals, using numpad notations for directions would be overkill.
Anyway, the reason people use shortcut notations is exactly as I first explained it. It's faster and easier, once you know them. I mean, that's basically the reason people use technical nomenclature everywhere except for cults. Sometimes people even ask why they don't use the names of the moves (because all the moves have names, even in Virtua Fighter, Soulcalibur, and Tekken, where the movelists are pages long).
This only becomes confusing in now because a lot of websites have custom graphics for buttons and notations that they only use on specific forums or wikis. That can be confusing, going from a faq where everything is written out in neat graphics, and then to the forum where everyone is using the old notation. I learned most of my notation way back at the arcades, where you had to print your own movelists off the internet (and before that, from magazines) and everyone learned the notation from the same sources. I can understand why it looks like there's a conspiracy trying to obfuscate the simplest parts of the game in order to make it hard to understand for new players or make them feel dumb, but it's not like that at all. This stuff has been going on since the mid 90s, and it's not going to change anytime soon.
I think the switch to front / back from high / low is shitty. Therefore the 1234 number scheme has made it real easy for me to translate the combos to the buttons. Not saying its hard to remember front or back, but the numbers are easier on my brain for some reason. Especially since I'm using a stick.
I'm curious to see the state of the bracket tonight. I think we should definitely do a losers bracket to even out the count if need be. (yes, I lost my match.. )
Yeah, in light of them removing stance change as a gameplay feature (rofl rofl), the front kick, back kick thing is weird. It messes up the layout for the official sticks as well.
So the 360 controller is abyssmal
The SF IV fightpad's d-pad is good, but the layout of the buttons is stupid for MK.
Buying a stick would be a waste of money
I may have to mark this one down as a loss and trade it in... its incredibly infruiating to lose the flow of combat because of the wonky inputs..
I know I know, "Its the user" but I mean... you really can't mess up Scorpion's teleport input, yet he just stands there and kicks like a dumbass...

Seriously, I think there are may be 5 of us who tried/played our matches. I know puffycow might be getting his Internet today, so that match could still happen. You played your match, and I made every attempt to play my guy (and he refused to friend me or respond to messages and doesn't even have the game).
The lack of anyone talking in the thread about tournament matches really shows that no one gave a shit about it I think. It sucks because I really wanted to fight people.
Is there an archive somewhere for the powerup 2011 tournament matches? I've seen some of the stuff and the fights were cool, and apparently the finals had a bunch of different kharacters getting used.
I was actually trying to test the damage of a combo last night, and since I couldn't find my 360 controller I had to go online. It was not good. I don't think I'll do that again unless they release that patch.

I think tournament doubt reared its' ugly head when most of us discovered just how vile the online is most of the time.
Perhaps a postponement, maybe even a restart, would be in order after this patch NRS promised us if it increases the quality of online play?
The people who were interested in the tournament were, and are so, because they enjoy playing the game and enjoy competition. Currently it's difficult to do either of those online.
Unfortunately everything I've heard seems to point to them only fixing ranked match searching not working and lag in King of the Hill (which is even worse than normal matches). It looks like normal 1 vs 1 won't get any sort of update, and that's what we would want better for the tournament. I don't expect any real improvement until the sequel ... well at least I hope their is improvement in the sequel.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I think I can say that 90%+ of my 1v1 matches from one of the rooms have been pretty smooth. Sometimes you just need to wait a little bit to see someone's actual latency. It'll show them with 4 green dots, but after 10 seconds it drops down to 2 or whatever.
All of the private matches I setup have been nice and smooth too. Ranked on the other hand... nothing is more infuriating than losing to some bullshit Raiden spam while you're swimming around trying to do anything. Raiden is annoying enough when the game is running right.
That being said, my player match stats are pretty good. I've been stomping on Scorpion, Noob, Ermac, and Smoke nonstop for days now Kung Lao (played well) is probably one of the hardest characters for so far. Shitty Kung Lao on the other hand, no sweat.
edit: WingedWeasel - goto the justin.tv page and click the "Videos" or "Previous shows" link near the bottom. The day 2 vid has the MK tournament from the round of 8 on.
Sometimes I get good matches, but more often than not it's got a noticeable amount of lag. The saving grace of the game is that most things are dial-a-combos so you don't have to worry about timing. If this was the online for say Street Fighter it would be unplayable. Overall I think it rates at the low end of playable fighting game netcode, but it's not horrible enough to stop me from playing. At least not yet.
Anyway, I'm still all for the tournament. I said I would participate and I will.
It is convenient that you can basically input your entire combo and then go get a drink, or poke yourself in the eye, or whatever you do when you've got free time.

How would one go about working on defense? I've been playing on easy and beginner and I came to realize I never block or combo break because I never have to.
Would upping the difficulty help? I don't want to get destroyed, I just want to practice. I haven't found a way in training to get the dummy to just spam certain attacks so I can get my timing down.
FK = Hamster
BK = Dog
FP = Cat
BP = Horse
Up = Push
Down = Pull
Left = Yank
Right = Shove
So the first combo from the earlier video is now:
Yank Horse, Horse + Cat, Yank then Push Hamster.
I like this system! Therefor I've redone all the fatalities and babalities in this format.
I will edit my other posts that has numbers (1 2) and letters (FK BK) to be unified in this system instead.

That's almost awesome. Actually it pretty much is.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.

If you don't have anyone locally to play against your only real option is to go online. Playing against real people is the best way to learn basic defense. Trial by fire is the way to go.
I know I'm currently going through this myself. I'm still not really used to having a block button instead of just pressing back in a 2D fighter.

You need to put the block button in a position that makes it easier to default to. Mentally, it should never be the last button on your checklist, or the one that's most difficult to reach. It should be the first button and the one that's easiest to reach.
For more advanced defence keep in mind that blocking works in weird ways in Mortal Kombat. It extends the characters limbs in ways they wouldn't be normally, especially when they're crouching. That's why you can crouch under most projectiles in the game, but you can't crouch block under them (your arms will be up and you'll block the hit). This applies to throws as well; you can crouch under throws, but if you block you'll still get grabbed. And you also can't buffer throw escapes while blocking. You need to let go of block before inputting the throw escape.
Blocking is counter-intuitive at first because a crouch block has a higher hitbox and the character looks like they're protecting from hits coming from above, yet there are still overheads in the game, and you crouch block lows. The crouch block stance basically looks like the complete opposite of what it actually does, which subtly throws things off.
And most important of all: defence is not strictly about blocking. It's about blocking AND punishing. Especially in Mortal Kombat, because blocked hits give meter and do block damage. Holding block all match will not win you games unless you're also punishing appropriately. So, once you learn how to block, learn how to punish.
i sent beta angel a friend request and messaged him when he wanted to play our match and he responded with who are you and i told him from the PA tourney and he didnt respond back. that was about a week ago so.... yeah =\
Hey, at least you are lucky and got a response of any kind. My guy basically said fuck this and refused to accept my friendship (FRIENDSHIP?) and didn't respond to the message I sent asking if he got the game.
See you in the second round!
Also, along the lines of defense, have patience. Don't panic and start jumping in every 5 seconds or throwing projectiles when the other guy has a teleport move. It is good to out wait the opponent and make them pay for mistakes.

This is so true. The worse your connection is, the more you have to play defensively and them simplify your punishes so you know they will work.

Not even just for when the connection isn't great. People (myself included) just panic and fuck up for no reason besides not having patience. You really have to read what your opponent is doing. Ask puffycow about the time me and him played 2v2 against randoms online. This one guy did the same fucking combo with Scorpion the whole time we played. So, he would tag me in and I would usually dispose of him. Of course the lag didn't help, but I had his combo down and would jump kick him when he tried to jump in (which was alllll the time).
so... bad netcode? should i get this or what? im pretty tempted by the $30 TRU sale, but if the netcode is shit maybe not. i dont have anyone locally to play with ever.
My saved game just corrupted and now even after deleting it I can't save. On the phone with MS now...SUPER pissed off...I had just beat story mode!
So I just realized im in the online tournament ( i dont remember signing up, maybe i did when i threw my hat into the xbox general player ring), but your my opponent and i can play tonight if you are around. If it is too late for first round action i can forfeit the match, though.
I've been messing around with Baraka since he was my favorite MK2 character. I ... I don't think he can really do anything. Someone tell me I'm horribly wrong.
