They've done sporadic announcements through their newsletter, which is also how I found out the release date. There hasn't been much information in quite a while, though. Glad to hear it's on track.
I feel like this would be unreal with the Oculus Rift.
I especially think it would be cool because of how nice the cockpit looks. Being able to look around it would be neato, and I think it could be used to target things so you could be flying straight ahead and target for info/combat/interaction things to the side/above/below.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Make it do nothing but change the angle of your view and control the rest with a joystick. It would be so crazy immersive.

won't happen, they would have to totally redesign the seta drive for this to work
that said I am planning on trying out a rift at pax prime, and if it is sexy, I will be ordering one specifically to play with X: Rebirth
Will the seta drive be in Rebirth? I mean, I guess it would but they showed off a boost ability which could replace the seta and "highway" things.

A total redesign of the seta wouldn't necessarily be required, just have time flow at the rate of the slowest set speed. Not exactly ideal, considering seta's purpose, but what can ya do?

But yeah, some co-op X would be kinda neat. Especially if your buddy(s) could take turret seats in your ship and stuff. Reenact things like the tie fighter battle in A New Hope.

You only fly that one ship in the game, but you can release and directly control powerful drones with different capabilities. So the host could still fly the ship and the other player would fly the drones!

I never minded the bugginess (I'm a Firaxis customer), but the combat felt really anemic to me, mostly due to the game's lackluster damage modeling & 'splosions. I know that X has always focused more on Space Inc than 'splosions, but I've been spoiled by Bridge Commander, so I need visceral machine-bleeding combat.
Lighting looks impressive, but it's X, so that's sort-of to be expected.
I'll keep an eye on this, and watch some Let's Play stuff before making a decision after it comes out.

I know Egosoft is a small team and everything, but they really need to a guy to work on their UI, a guy to work on their flight model and camera controls, and a guy to work on their AI, respectively. With those aspects as they are, all the X games I've tried have been basically unplayable, and if they don't do something drastic I expect Rebirth to be the same.

Which is not to say that the pathfinding is totally awesome. Being in-system with a ship that's collecting pebbles is a good way to get that ship killed.

Always been a little bummed at the one ship concept, but I guess it could be fine provided they REALLY pump the upgrades you can get, with one off special upgrades, boatloads of normal upgrades and upgrades you only find by searching ancient areas/ secret places etc... Plus the ship needs to change based on the stuff put on it.

Terran Conflict was the last one I played and exactly none of those issues were solved by it. In fact, all of the examples I'm thinking of were from Terran Conflict.

So, been bumming around in x3:AP, got an energy cell complex set up, and it's feeding a PPC/2GJ shield complex, seems to be working out fairly well.
How crazy is trying to mod this game? Because man would I love to be able to automate my nav sat deployment (I like to stick a sat at 0,0,0 in every system, which gets to be a hassle because you have to tell the ship to fly to 0,0,0, then poop out a sat, then tell it to move to the next system, and so on.)

Aaaaand I'm sold. This looks like an X game that is accessible. I've got X2, X3:TC and Albion Prelude, but I've never found then accessible enough to really get into.

Ah memories, once I loaded a half dozen helper mods into the game and ran a laptop side-by-side for all the spreadsheets & maps it got MUCH easier to navigate. Never had another game that needed that many references on-hand.
Loved the heck out of the X3 & TC but seemed to take a good 20 or so hours to really start getting the game figured out. These days folks seem to start whining if it takes more then 4 hours to finish a game.

The complexity is fine. Just make the flight model fun to fly.
Oh yeah, a non-shit story and non-shit story missions would be nice too.

This looks like it can do what you want. Modding's fairly straightforward - if I recall correctly it's basically just download this plugin manager and do everything through it.
