Despite the jankiness and the bad voice acting (and the subtitles not always matching up to the voices really irks me in games), I'm actually enjoying the campaign so far.
Also, Fervid Corona is one of the coolest names and places ever.
The voice acting is really bad, like Final Fantasy X bad. I am interested in the story though. Having the gates shut down was a pretty neat trick and should allow for some cool story telling. I also like the space highways although reactions to it seem to be mixed. Once this thing gets patched and modded it'll be a good game.
I wonder how much this debacle might have damaged egosoft in the long run. If other companies can come out with space sims that are whole on launch and fun to play then I think it's game over. It's easy to be a fuckup when you're the only game in town but that's changing soon.
Any idea if there is a random chance for pilots to abandon their ship like in X3:AP? I read that you need to hire a pilot to send to the enemy ship to claim it, but no idea how to get someone to abandon their ship.... especially because they ignore coms as soon as you go hostile.
on a side note, anyone else notice the 3 shells in the bathroom?
Yeah I've had one pilot bail on me in a dog fight before. They pop out in this little escape pod, then I double clicked on the fighter left behind and picked 'claim'. I didn't put a pilot in it though so it just sits there.
The funny thing is, you can talk to the escape pod and they'll be all like 'sorry, don't have time to chat right now!'
Thank you guys for posting 1st impressions. I'm going to play X3:AP for awhile because I've had it for awhile and haven't got to it yet. BF4 is wearing off on me due to introduced crashes and I got an immediate hankerin for open world space when I saw the launch of Rebirth. It will be my winter sale goal!
I am predicting it being an absolute clusterfuck. Everything I see on it is all sales pitch, and no substance, and the fanboys seem to have latched onto it as the solution to all their problems. No developer is that good, and people are going to be disappointed.

So I installed the XRM mod for X3:AP. How screwed am I?

Yah ... it looks like a cash grab to me. Why bother making a great game when you can just sell people models they cant use yet and make millions.

You seem to have confused Star Citizen with this game.
my X3 gameplay is slow and methodical, but that xrm sounds super badass, and basically just adds a fuck ton of ships, I especially like that pirate sectors are fleshed out and are like an actual 'race' now, more people I can declare space war on!
I might download the mod tonight and start a new game.... its that or give rebirth another go, it seems they are releasing daily patches that are fixing a lot of the crashing and broken stuff
I spent most of last night playing around with capturing ships from cartel bosses.
It seems like in order to successfully capture a ship you must do the mini-game of destroying and hacking. If you run out of targets to destroy you will not succeed.
It does not seem to matter if you lose a couple boarding pods (somewhere I read that if you lost any you would fail).
The Balor(?)s in DeVries are really hard to capture since they are constantly firing missiles at you (easy to dodge but it makes hacking almost impossible). The problem is if you beat up the ship enough to safely launch boarding pods, you will not be able to capture the ship since the capture mini-game breaks after you destroy a couple targets. The only one I was able to capture was one in an Albion sector and I don't really remember how I did it.

They're saying the 1.14 patch has fixed engineers so they actually repair ship parts now. Should fix the issue of nearly all captured ships being permanently crippled immobile lumps.
Unfortunately, defense officers still don't work at all. In case you haven't noticed, none of your ships will fire their weapons or launch drones. If left alone they can be destroyed by random single fighters. The only ship that will fight is the unique construction ship, as they say it has different hardcoded AI.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.

It baffles me that they released it in this buggy state. This bug is basically saying they didn't test whether or not ships in your squad will fight back. Since that's like...a major aspect of the game, it's saying they didn't test squad mechanics at all, or they did and they ignored that it didn't work. It's one thing if the Defense Officers don't work, or break under XY and Z conditions because of an unseen conflict of those conditions. But for them to not work AT ALL is incredible.
On the upside. Since trading is more or less working now, the game does get a lot more fun. However, the inability to cancel previous orders means that any ships broken before 1.13 will stay broken unless you edit your save.
I had enough money to build a space station but when the construction ship asked me if I was going to supply the parts or if he had to run around and get them I said I'd do it myself (since I was afraid I'd break it the other way around). And now I'm not sure how to complete building the station. The instruction manual hilariously only contemplates you'll pick the option for the construction ship to do it all for you, and doesn't explain how to do it the other way around. Anyone know?

Most of the talk I've seen from beta testers was they were running very specific tests from the devs. It sounds like they didn't get much chance to explore other features or even bug them. God knows if Ego even has internal QA.

Hopefully the game will run better and take advantage of modern systems more than AP did.
Also I hope they fix some of the retarded AI. Going through the trouble to set up a mini-carrier and stocking it with fighters only to watch the fighters suicide-dive into my hull instead of docking was pretty frustrating.
I think one of the specific things they addressed was the pathfinding AI. Part of how they reworked sectors for the new game.

I dont know if not having any hardpoints to destroy makes you auto-fail. Boarding is the only thing I've been doing (was the only thing I did in X3). Captured an Ions Harvester, which I immediately sold..only to leave
the station and find the same ship (now owned again) but in the same state I sold it in. When you attempt a board, I think it slightly or completely repairs whatever hardpoint it randomly selects.
I've been forced to destroy the same engine three times in a row, etc. I re-board the same ship, which was completely defenseless. I was told to destroy a single hardpoint..which was the drone launcher..and the marines captured
the ship in under 20 seconds.

Hmm .. I havent tried to capture anything but the ships from Cartel Boss missions. Honestly I wasted hours attempting to board Balors and no matter what I did it just wouldnt work. There was another class of well armed ship that as long as I left lots of weapons to take out, I had no problems.
IDK .. maybe the Balor's have crazy crews and my 50 marines(6 elite,14 vet) was not enough. but honestly they only sell for ~4million so now I just destroy them.
Considering the state of the game it's safe to say the QA for Ego is not very Super.
As a QA person myself, I have trouble believing that if they had QA they didn't write this stuff up. Even the worst testers I've worked with would have caught it.
This reeks of a producer waiving stuff to meet a deadline.

Once the construction ship reaches the build point, it'll deploy and you'll see a very vague outline of the station appear. (It will also progress your objectives at this point.) If you go up to the construction ship it'll have several purchase orders displayed for all the components you will need to complete the station. (I believe it lists these in the build menu when you order the station too) You'll have to go find and buy these items yourself and then sell them to the construction ship. Be aware that Reinforced Metal Plating cannot be purchased because the only station that sells it is Plutarch. You can potentially find Hull-tech freighters around that carry it that you can capture to get the materials, otherwise you'll have to edit the savegame to give you some.
I don't know the exact numbers, but it'll need Energy Cells, Reinforced Metal Plating, Fusion Reactors, Bio-optic wiring, Force Field Projectors, HIT/MA turrets, Plasma Turrets, and V Launcher depending on how you specced it out.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
Happened to run across a small station in one of the Barren Heart zones that was hostile. Didn't think much of it until it opened fire and vaporized my ship in one hit. I've never seen a hostile station attack before and I thought it was a new glitch at first when my ship exploded for seemingly no reason.

I cant really say anything for sure, I've just been tinkering with stuff. I never successfully boarded any of the cartel ships either, so I just started looking at number of weapons on board and went after ships with 10 or fewer.
Ions harvesters/Rahanas freighters seemed to work every time. However, the Ions Harvesters sell for much more than Rahanas ships.
Selling two Ions gave me enough money to buy every upgrade I could find and several of the good marines. I would think Balors/Suls should be doable now.

There's one station out there that actually has a bunch of mines deployed all around it. It got me too the first time I went through!
Based on the problems I had making my station, and other bugs following me from launch I decided to just start a new game.

If FFX is your low bar for voice acting, you should play more adventure games and eastern european RPGs.
The voice acting in X:R is a step up from X3, so I'll give them credit for that.

What they should have done was call the 15th and "Early Access Beta Free by pre-ordering" .. and said the release date would be sometime in January.

Just found this link - http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=351609 Which details what happens when you board
