One that often happens still in a lot of MMOs, in fact.
The sparse amount of creatures and enemies out and about, as was said in the stream, is for aesthetics for Tatooine. They said it didn't feel right with a bunch of things all about, I can imagine on some worlds there will be a lot of things walking around.
Tatooine is supposed to be sparse, I'm ok with that.
Heck, it was my favorite planet in SWG as well when the game first came out. It was an adventure going from one city to another before mounts and speeders were added. When we were novice gun fighters it was mighty scary going around the ridge and seeing some giant toad ready to kick our asses.
Yes I know. It is a dismal place to visit but this thread created by GamewizX on swtor.com, is an excellence compilation of all the info coming out of E3 in an easy to read manner.
As much as I want to disagree with Chaos (textures failing to render isn't exactly the end of the world and it does happen a lot in other games), he has a legitimate point: They would have play-tested the shit out of everything that ended up in that demo. Maybe this was a freak occurrence and it doesn't reflect upon the state of the game at all. But it seems completely plausible that there just wasn't enough testing done to account for everything in the demo. IF that is the case, who knows what sort of state the rest of the game - all the parts that weren't tested a thousand times in preparation for an E3 demo - is in?
It seemed pretty obvious they were on the alpha/beta/whatevertheyareat server, unless the other people were others playing the game at E3.
The point is that they knew well in advance exactly which areas of the game would be played and I'm sure would have focused on getting that area polished accordingly. I never saw the stream (not archived?), but the comments at the beginning imply that the content was known ahead of time ("we're going to run around Tatooine...").

Correllian Run Radio has a recording of the E3 stream on their home page.

And how would that help them fix a graphical glitch like the speeder thing?
They were just running the game. It's in Beta, so there's definitely going to be bugs. The only thing knowing where they will be playing let's them do is make sure all the content is in place. Which, afaik, it all was.
All I'm saying is that they would have play tested the shit out of it before hand, that's all. Bugs are always going to get through, obviously. And yes, it is a beta, I think we all understand that. My only point is that they would have been breaking their backs to make sure that what they showed was bug free, and without jumping to conclusions, it is plausible that other areas of the game have more unfixed bugs than what was shown at E3.
Again, plausible. I am not saying the game is completely broken and should never be released. Don't be so defensive.
People keep regarding it as a DEMO. It seemed pretty obvious they were on the alpha/beta/whatevertheyareat server, unless the other people were others playing the game at E3.
It was a semi-scripted demo. Yes, the game was "live", but they were running a specific character through a specific zone and were doing very specific things with it, all of which were pre-scripted.
This wasn't just a random person playing and going anywhere they wanted. This was a highly controlled demo. It's a big deal when you get a glitch like that. You rehearse these things to death. Haven't any of you done a demonstration in front of a large group before? You account for everything.
Also, those of you have had mounts not appear on your screen, this is probably due to lag (it has never happened to me). It should never happen on a "live" server that had no other players on it. The zone was empty. I howled when I saw that happen, you could tell both of the guys were a little stunned by that.
Remember, the ability for patrons to play was not provided. Instead, we got a tightly regimented game of show and tell.
Look, I liked a lot of what I saw. I think the game has massive potential. But when you show off something, at an event like this, and you get a glitch, please allow a fanboi like me to laugh. It's pretty indicative of a game that clearly hasn't got everything worked out.
The previous poster made a fine comment though: devs crunch hard once the release date is firm. A lot of great software went from "tenuous" to "ready for market" in the last 90 days. So there's still a chance here we'll all see this game under the Christmas tree (or for my family its the we don't celebrate Christmas, but you get a prize anyway present).
Anyone else a little concerned about animations still? They look stiff and unresponsive, but really its a feel you dont get until you actually play it.

For what it is worth, I didn't have a problem with them. I think the whole graphic engine looks a little dated, but overall the game play looked interesting enough that it wasn't a big deal.
There was a recent review posted here, that pretty much called out the animations though (just like you did) and said (to paraphrase) that the game better release soon, or the graphic engine will look even more dated a year from now. So I think others will feel the same way.
I tend not to fuss too much about graphics myself. I care more about exploration and style. Graphics are useless to me if you expect me to follow a cookie-cutter conveyor belt of PvE quests.
WOW is great, because you can explore a lot of different looking zones. It doesn't bother me that the graphics are low-end, because the style is there and I have so many interesting places to explore. I like WOW's style and I admire how their cartoon look, allows them to service very crummy machines. That makes WOW very playable on machines that other MMOs can't run on at all.
LOTRO had nice graphics and some decent exploration too, but it often lacked style. The zones looked nice, but they were often a little dull, certainly the mobs in LOTRO were really dull.
SW:TOR seems to be quite vast. If there are lots of fun places to visit, I'll take less animation and detailed graphics. My personal preference only of course!

Yeah I haven't really been watching a lot of gameplay videos because the ones I've seen have made the game look pretty dull. But then I watch gameplay videos for other MMO's and am instantly relieved when I'm reminded that they're always terrible to spectate. I know what you mean about the stiffness though. I'm hoping it'll 'feel' right when played.
Looks like a dry run for the keys on that gaming netbook.

Personally, I think that would be a really awesome keyboard if the special keys were on the left hand side. Having to let go of the mouse to hit those buttons... naw, son, naw.

Yeah, none of what you mention is going to have anything to do with a bug like the mount not appearing. That's got nothing to do with what zone you are in or anything. It's just a standard bug that would appear in any part of the game, no matter how controlled. Until you fix it, of course.
Personally, I think that would be a really awesome keyboard if the special keys were on the left hand side. Having to let go of the mouse to hit those buttons... naw, son, naw.
Who uses a mouse anymore anyway? The future is built-in trackpads!
If they knew for a fact that the game was coming out in 2011, we'd already have a release date: holiday '11. The fact that they haven't announced that already tells you that even if that is their target, they are unsure enough that they'll make it that they're unwilling to announce anything.
There won't be any paid beta scheme, particularly not for the sake of investor relations. There's no more counterproductive thing to say to investors than "we're getting desperate and we'll do anything to raise more cash for this project."
Don't think you can read too much into it. For one they've said they want a huge marketing blitz leading up to the release date. If they announced now it'll be lost in all the other news.
WoW's Cataclysm released Dec. 7. The date wasn't announced until Oct. 4.
Warhammer Online released at the end of September. It's date wasn't set until the end of July.
Anyone else a little concerned about animations still? They look stiff and unresponsive, but really its a feel you dont get until you actually play it.
I think part of the problem is folks being unfamiliar with their abilities and skills. With no auto-attack you can make this game look clunky by being slow firing off your moves - especially folks who are in demo space pointing and clicking.
I watched folks play at PAX East for a good three hours and the game looked a lot better paced when more experienced MMO players were at the helm.

I don't think the mount appearing late is a lag issue, but rather a rendering issue. The engine is trying to render out the visuals of everything in the area and it takes time for all of it to get done.
really, a "mount not appearing" bug is making people rage? wow have class skills bugged from 2005 that is still in the game today, hell wow have this same bug all the time, it more of a lag issue then gameplay, and since it a bug that doesn't hurt gameplay, it really low on the list on what to fix, this bug will be fix during a hotfix within the first month after launch. hell swg had more and worse bugs then a missing mount modal.

Also, I'm imagining that guy arching his head all the way back and going all "Awoooooooooooo".
I have a pretty high tolerance for minor bugs when it comes to MMO. As long as it's mostly a visual glitch, that's not really a big concern to me. Today I was invisible for about half of a dungeon run through Rift. My character literally did not render. It was like I was playing the invisible man without the benefit of rogue invisibility.
The dude who ran the video of SWTOR a few weeks ago said that there were a lot of bugs in the Alpha 2 version he was running. Not particularly surprising for a game in alpha, but that's a game in alpha after all. When there is another inevitable leak of the latest biggest update to the game testers, we'll see how it is.
Didnt Windows blue screen at one of their conferences? Shit happens in demos. Id be happier if the shit was happening while I was playing the demo, but c'est la vie

Shit, I have a rendering issue with mounts in WoW still. The rendering lags behind a little on occassion and I find myself swimming through the air at ridiculous speeds. It's pretty fun, but it's just a graphical glitch that corrects itself pretty quickly. It's not a big deal.
Now, if the glitch was that I couldn't get on the mount (or rather, get the properties of being on a mount), then it'd be a big deal. But a simple graphical glitch is nothing major.
