Bought BC2, it was more money than I wanted to spend but everyone is saying such good things about it. Please tell me these sales don't happen often. Explaining why I bought this to the wife will be tough when I'm not entirely sure myself.
In other news I bought ME1 and it rocks - am really enjoying this lots.
I believe they delibrately reduced the sensitivity of mouse controls to match that of control pads. Speedy precision mouse aiming ruined the feel because it was so easy to kill the necros.

Between Critic Reviews, and the 50/50 split on here about Single Player being at least semi-decent, plus what appears to be the ability to crash a helicopter into a tank, and at least a few people to shoot at online it looks like Bad Company 2 is what I am going to go with, besides its only 7 bucks.
Thanks!
Thanks for the tips all, going to mow now and start my download, Good lord its hot in Mississippi when you have to mow...
So I picked up Crysis: Warhead to use in part for the Mechwarrior: LL mod, but I decided I wanted to muck around with the single player a little since I had never played the original...and it runs like crap.
i7 quad-core
6 gigs ram
Geforce GTS 360m
Windows 7
What can I do to fix this? I can only run it in 1920x1080 (native res of this monitor) without butchering the aspect ratio, and even at "mainstream" (2nd worst) settings it still chugs. I've tried using the "-dx9" command through the steam properties launch console to force DirectX 9 and it seems like it's not doing anything, either. Any suggestions?

it's your graphics card that's the issue, but i fear since the m at the end indicates mobile that you're gaming on a laptop and thus can't do much to upgrade it

It's a new-ish Asus gaming laptop, I can't believe this thing runs Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2 without a hitch but chokes on a game 3 years old. Ugh. Thanks though.

Crysis is notorious for this. It's probably an optimization issue.

To be fair, the game is Crysis. I can't even run it on my (admittedly shitty) desktop PC.

The resolution is probably whats killing it there. I'm running the exact same card (have an Asus gaming laptop myself) but the screen is only 720p and I'm running it on high without a hitch.
Maybe its because I played Amnesia before I got around to playing Dead Space, but I didn't find it remotely scary. It was a fun action game with great atmosphere, but it didn't scare me one bit.
So... Dead Space... Was handling it OK until I got to tentacle fetus zone.
Fuck that shit, I'm done for tonight.
Hah I got to chapter 3 and was set it aside.
Someone had some good advice earlier in the thread that I have replaying in my head constantly throughout my DS1 playthrough. "They are locked in here with ME".
Now I'm running around, listening for changes in music so I can pwn some necro-bitches.
Welp, maybe made it five minutes in Dead Space before I had to quit out and plug in my control pad.
Funnysad part is that turning around still feels jerky even with the control pad.
Turn off V-Sync.
That takes care of the mouse lag, but not the fact that to, say, turn completely around I need to run my mouse across the pad half a dozen times even at max mouse sensitivity.
And if I increase the sensitivity enough to where it's playable in-game via ini edits or increasing my mouse's dpi, menus become hilariously awful.
Not to mention the fact that mouse movement starts sluggish for a moment and then accelerates, as a design choice I understand, means that trying to find any happy medium is practically impossible.
Control pad works alright even if I still feel like turning and looking around feels jerky, not even remotely worth fucking with the kb/m controls.
EDIT: On a more positive note, funniest part of the game so far. Stomping necromorphs to bust them open like pinatas, and having them catch on your leg so they flop around behind you as you walk down a corridor.

Oh it's definitely nowhere near Amnesia in terms of scares. Dead Space is "I'll just give it a rest for a while" whereas Amnesia was "Power off the PC and sit rocking back and forth in my chair with a vacant look in my eyes for 15 minutes".
Maybe I just shouldn't play any games that are even remotely scary.

I got BC2 and MoH:Airborne. Thinking about shooting mans.
I run a similar laptop setup and I can run Crysis at around the 38 FPS mark. Which, honestly, is perfectly fine.
Of course, I see all kinds of superhumans complain about anything below 60FPS being unplayable, but 90% of them I've met cant tell a difference without fraps or similar telling them what their FPS is ahead of time before they can complain. So, hey.
ALSO: If you get BC2, get the SPECACT kit. At least if you ever plan to play a god damn medic. WHY they felt compelled to put a giant 'Shoot me' bright red beret on the russian medic is beyond me, but fuck them for that, thanks. I bought specact just to get something a bit more muted so I wasn't headshot country for miles with my bright shining bullseye hat on.
Medal of Honor Airborne is a must have at this price. Took me a while to get used to the weird cover/iron sight mechanic but now its insanely good. I love it. Landing on a tower and taking out goons is amazing.

Sorry Dead Space, maybe the summer or winter sale.
Late to the party, but honestly I think I'm just gonna keep at the backlog for now and wait for the expected Halloween sale. I figure DS2 should get down under $20 for that (hopefully more like $10-15'ish assuming the non-sale price continues to drop over the course of the year).

there shouldn't be any mouse acceleration, but sensitivity while in aiming mode (weapon raised) is much lower than sensitivity in normal walk around mode. it does take some getting used to, and DS2 eliminates it.

Started The Witcher. Game is fucking great so far. Only complaints are that it's really clicky (though I'm getting used to that) and that it seems to have no vsynch option and I'm getting some bad tearing during cutscenes.

you should be able to force v-sync on in your graphics driver control panel.

For those wanting to get into Bad Company 2, grab the SPECACT kit upgrade. It's $3.00 right now, and although you shouldn't be bothered by not having some special models/skins, the DLC unlocks the final gun in each class.
You know, unless you're a fan of getting your ass handed to you as you try desperately to unlock a weapon that doesn't shoot winged rubber dildos instead of bullets.

Are you implying the starter gun isn't garbage compared to the final gun in each class? Cause that's just goosery. After grabbing SPECACT and having access to worthwhile weaponry, I did much, much better.
Also, the fact that +HP and +DMG are unlocks at later levels doesn't help one bit in that regard. Terrible idea, that.

The MG3 is probably the worst LMG in the game, the UMP 45 is not a bad gun but it's bad at being an SMG compared to, say, the PP-2000, the M95 is great if your goal is to be one of the worthless Wookiees whacking each other off on a hill while real men win the game, and the M16 can't even fire full auto. Meanwhile, the PKM is passable, the starting Engineer peashooter is about as anything's going to get until you unlock the PP-2000 or maybe the AKS, the M24 is worthless like most sniper guns, and the AEK is fine. Besides, you unlock the second gun after about 30 seconds of hiding behind a wall spotting people getting spawnkilled, so it's not a big deal that you are stuck with the first gun for a while.
Frankly the gun you have is more or less secondary, unless you're a sniper, in which case you're mostly useless unless you have something that fires fast enough to kill more than 1 person every 5 seconds. What really matters is arming the M-COMs or capturing the flags, and if you're good at the game, you can do that with a Tommy gun and a 1911 (which I sometimes do). Bad Company 2 is really good about making sure high levels don't make you UBER DUED, although you're right that the +DMG perk helps (and the SPECTAT kit won't get you that a second faster).

Something more like BC1, where there was more humor. And driving past tanks in a golf cart.
