Regarding the old man/skeletron: From personal experience, if you kill skeletron, he does not (yet) respawn. If you die to skeletron, the old man respawns after a little bit (for me, I died to skeletron on one day, played for another hour or two, went to bed, went to work, came home from work, old man was back. Not sure if he was supposed to respawn instantly and I just had a short term respawn fail glitch, or if he's supposed to respawn after X amount of play time or X amount of RL time or what.) Haven't personally tried melting the old man in lava.
Regarding needing to MP: I haven't played MP yet and have completed basically everything. There is nothing in the game that *requires* outside assistance.
day returns the old man to the world of the living.
I am nearly positive that day occurred in-game after I'd died to skeletron (actually that multiple days occurred in-game) and I ran around the dungeon entrance and made a few suicide runs into the dungeon with no old man but one big pissed off over-9000-damage skeleton head in the dungeon.
I died to skeletron, went back to the dungeon and the old man wasn't there. I was tempted to go inside and see if the head squashed me even when he wasn't there. So thanks for confirming something I was too cowardly to test myself.
I knew the old man was watching me from somewhere though, I could feel it.
Dig out a a decent flat area to drag him to with lots of unholy arrows and a decent bow (fire straight up into him) while trying not to get stuck in his spin, chug a potion, rinse and repeat till he pops.
this is how I did it, with about a stack of lesser potions. unholy arrows passing through him is pretty nice.
I did alright just tanking the damage of his head charges with shadow gear and potions whilst thrashing at him wildly with the Blade of Grass. Rocket boots to chase him into the sky and keep up the pressure between head charges helped.

Regarding the time between head charges, I just switched between blade of grass and the thorn blnaetuklbnaeuotbn boomerang that also comes from the jungle. Blade of grass for when the head was nearby, edfgbuoaentbuioan boomerang for when he was out of reach.
He seems to operate almost exactly like stage one Eye of Cthulhu in terms of movement patterns, except with arms instead of projectile eyeballs.
edit: Also, on a mostly unrelated tangent, I fought him during a blood moon. Possibly not the best choice I've ever made in my life, but it was fun.
Again, if the old man doesn't respawn try pulling one of the 9k damage heads out at night and soloing that.
How is this accomplished, exactly? The moment you even see that thing, you're hit for 9000 damage.
The skulls that spawn at night do normal damage rather than instakill. I'm still not sure I'd be able to train just one of them outside, since it seems I'm set upon by multiple skulls very quickly, but I'll give it a try tonight.

Skeletron down. That's all the bosses. Went dungeon delving directly after and made out like a bandit.
I'm now equipped with a full set of Necro armour, a Muramasa, and a couple of feral claws. The game is a cake-walk now. I guess I've beaten it. I could go clear out the rest of the undeground jungle, but I accidentally flooded it while trying to drain my shaft (Hey-o!).
I'd like to try some organized game modes, though.
Here's a couple of shots of my fight with Skeletron. I'm not trapped in there with him. He's trapped in there with me.
Fought Skeletron w/Molten armour and Minishark, the kill felt kinda cheap but sooooo worth it. Dungeon was a walk in the park, is this the end of my characters life? Should I retire?

All bosses pwned and all areas walks in the park was my beat-the-game condition.
Make sure you've had at least one Goblin Invasion as well.
Bah, I still haven't seen a Goblin Invasion, but without any way to speed up the day/night cycle I'm not just going to sit around waiting for one.
I was rather disappointed by mine. Imagine instead of tons of slimes coming at your forever, it's tons of goblins. Eventually, you'll see a message that the invasion has been defeated.
You do get a lot of gold and spiky balls, but it'd be nice if there was a goblin boss at the end of it with some loot.
I got my first goblin invasion very early in the game and it was a real chore. Lasted for-freaking-ever and I didn't even get anything cool from it, besides a bunch of spiky balls (which helped me beat EoC for the first time, I'll admit).
Got my second one last night....I was wearing full Dark armor, swinging Muramasa....they didn't stand a chance. Even got some Rocket Boots from it, I believe.
The most disappointing thing about Goblin invasion is that they only attack in quite a small area near the world spawn point, so if you moved any distance before making your fort then the goblins don't bother you at home and can be happily ignored.
I'm in the middle of my second invasion which has been going on for in game weeks now as I kill a handful each time I pass the centre of the map on my skybridge.

A single tile path laid across the world in the sky. Takes a little while to build but is good for:
- Finding floating islands
- Fast Transport (really fast with Hermes boots)
Is bad for:
- Meteors
Meteors don't run into wooden platforms, do they? That would be lame.
If not, I'd definitely make my skybridges that way.
My first (and only so far) meteor scored a direct hit on the roof of the dungeon.
edit: Hammers will let you re-use basically any piece of furnishing/background wall, while pickaxes let you re-use most types of brick, and axes let you re-use wood walls (I think). Basically, hammer usually, axe or pickaxe sometimes.
Again, if the old man doesn't respawn try pulling one of the 9k damage heads out at night and soloing that.

FYI, this worked. It was kind of a pain making my way out of the very vertical part of the dungeon while constantly getting knocked around but once I made it out it was pretty simple. Transit tunnel + Sunfury for FTW.
does anklet of the wind constantly increase your movespeed or does it work like the hermes boots
It's a constant. Why would it be the same item? :P
I finally beat Skeletron, and my third chest in the labyrinth got me a Muramasa, so now I tear shit up pretty easily. Now that I've more or less beaten the game for now, I've committed myself to a new laborious project:
Reconstruct all the temples from Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link.
So I got this game today. My first minute of play was pretty priceless...
I loaded up the world for the first time, and I see this guy walking away from me. It says he is a Guide, so I chase him down. He walks a little bit down a hill and in to the mouth of a dark cave, that seem to lead to a pool. I right click him and start reading his tutorial.
That's when the first slime ever comes, and knocks me in to the pool. It turned out to be pretty deep, and I drowned.
Game over.
I respawned as a wiser person. Been playing for a few hours now and it seems neat.

For those having troubles in Hell or the dungeon, the Cobalt Shield is your friend. I think if I had to choose any one accessory it very well might be that. The ability to ignore all knockback - against bosses, slimes, hellstone and meteorstone, imps, snakes - is just too good. Once you're in molten armor you can literally ignore half the monsters in the game because they do negligible damage and they can't knock you into pits or lava. You can even just walk right through them.
Also, apparently landing on ash prevent you taking fall damage. The More You Know.
I am getting this game tonight. I'm going to probably be killed in the first hour or so. Is this expected behavior?

Took a trip down into Hell to get some ore, and fixed myself up a full set of armor and a new pick. After that, I finished exploring my labyrinth completely.
Did the Molten Armor set bug get fixed in the patch that just landed?

Also the Cobalt Shield is a must-have accessory.
Heh I haven't even killed skeletron yet, but I saw a cobalt shield in a dungeon chest, so I spent the next half hour getting it out of that chest before dyingt to the insta death skulls. So worth it.

It CAN be pretty difficult to kill Skeletron by yourself - not in the usual way, but because you have to do it before dawn lest he insta-kill you.
I have trouble with that anyway :P

Well I died in the first 5 minutes. So I'd say an hour would be pretty good for a first life.
