Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is an itinerant journalist who tires of New York and America under the Eisenhower administration and travels to Puerto Rico to write for The San Juan Star. Kemp begins the habit of drinking rum and becomes obsessed with the woman Chenault (Amber Heard).[2]

The alcoholic Robinson had been sober for six-and-a-half years before he started writing the screenplay for The Rum Diary.[8] The filmmaker found himself suffering from writer's block. He started drinking again, a bottle of alcohol a day until he finished the script and then he quit drinking again. He spent a year filming in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Hollywood and resisted drinking until they arrived in Fajardo. Robinson remembers, "It was 100 degrees at two in the morning and very humid. Everyone's drenched in sweat. One of the prop guys goes by with a barrow-load of ice and Coronas. I said: 'Johnny, this doesn't mean anything.' And reached for a Corona." ... Some savage drinking took place. When I was no longer in Johnny's environment I went back to sobriety."[8]

Johnny Depp: enabler of alcoholics.

The Rum Diary is Hunter S. Thompson's second novel. He wrote it when he was 22 and it was unpublished until 1998. His first novel is still unpublished. The novel's premise is similar to the film's, except for the addition of Yeamon, a psychopathic character and the cause of a lot of misery for Kemp.

The novel is really strange. It reads like Thompson, but there's this dynamic to it that is a lot more.. hell, I don't know. Read it. Let's talk about it and the upcoming movie.

It comes out this October.

I am intrigued by stories involving alcoholism. I think I will give this one a try. Perhaps I'll consider the movie afterwards.

no, bruce robinson, the alcoholic from the OP

apparently was originally supposed to do fear and loathing, but couldn't figure out how to get it on screen

the rum diary is a much different book, anyway.

You've inspired me to also give alcoholism a try. Perhaps I will consider the book afterwards.

also the sense of muggy hopeless drunken lechery that pervades the rum diaries is prolly why i generally consider it one of the best books HST wrote

I have a six pack of Hunter S. Thompson inspired Gonzo beer in my fridge. This has reminded me to drink it tonight.

Also, I read this book about 10 years ago and I don't remember much about it except it being very strange. I'll have to re-read it before I watch the movie.
