No More Heroes pixel art shirt

Just finished No More Heroes (the first game) and loved it. I especially loved this shirt graphic:

When I read the description of what is simply listed in the game as "Shirt #97" all it says is "Famitsu shirt design winner" and that's literally about it. Not who it's by, or even a name for the design of the shirt. I scrolled down a bit on the shirt options and there were about 2 or 3 other Famitsu shirt design winners, so I guess there was a shirt design contest in Japan to get your design made into the shirt which was held by Japanese magazine Famitsu. Now with this in mind, I went around online searching high and low as to who the artist who created this watermelon graphic is and have found nothing. I love the graphic so much that I decided to make a sprite pixel version of it:

Now, I would love to make a real shirt of this, either in the pixel recreation I did or clean up the original. But, because of my respect for my fellow artist and the art community, I will not do that until I can contact the original artist personally and get his or her permission. If they say no, then I won't make the shirt, simple as that. I understand the biggest problem is not even tracking down him or her down, it would probably be the language barrier. I doubt they know much english, nor do I know japanese. I do however want to try and find this artist even if I have to have someone translate it back and forth between the two of us. If anybody has any kind of information or any means of being able to track this artist down I would greatly appreciate it. I posted this here because it is a large gaming community forum that may have some information on the matter. This may seem like a ridiculous request, but I really like this artwork and would A. Like to get permission from the artist themself and B. See any more of their artwork since I really liked this graphic alone. If anybody thinks this should go somewhere else, or has a better gaming forum where this could go, I will delete this thread and it bring it elsewhere. I have already tried the official Ubisoft website No More Heroes forum and have garnered no responses. Thank you.

If you're not profiting from the artwork, I don't see why there would be a problem wearing the design as a shirt (again, as long as its only for you and you're not making any money)
If people ask you could always say its a video game shirt!

But I could be 100% wrong, I can see why you'd want permission first but its probably not made by one artist whom you can just contact

(also that watermelon guy looks awesome)

Yeah, even if I didn't make them for profit (which I really don't plan to) I still want to credit the original designer, since it isn't my artwork.

    Technically it's Capcom's artwork now.

I'll save you the suspense, this is a really esoteric request and nobody here is likely to have any kind of specific knowledge to help you hunt down a nameless japanese designer.

If you are dead set on contacting this person you should probably start by looking for someone who speaks japanese, has access to back issues of famitsu, and is willing to scour them for details on this contest and its winners. Good luck with that.

I would just make the shirt, the chance that you'd contact the artist seem kind slim since it a just an obscure T-shirt design from a video game

you could always put the little copyright symbol if its really bugging you!

It's actually Ubisoft, not Capcom,(I can understand the confusion given they published Killer 7) that owns the No More Heroes franchise. I could shoot the company an e-mail, though I doubt they'd know either. Though, at least if I e-mail Ubisoft I can at least ask for permission to use the sprite I made if it's not for profit while giving them full credit.

And yeah, I know it's a pretty obscure thing to ask, but I figured I might as well try and find out if anybody knew.
