Damnit to hell, Vizio don't 'do' the UK That's a pain.
Aw bummer didn't know that. Sorry. 3D isn't something I've really looked into so I don't know who else has a passive 3D display. I would recommend the Panasonic ST60 but its active, and probably a bit more expensive than you were looking for.
No worries man, thanks anyway

Chances are I'll be getting that (Panasonic TC-P50S60) however Amazon no longer seems to carry it. What's a good choice for getting it online and will there be any chance it'll be on sale for Black Friday?
Yeah they had that for $650 until they were out of Amazon stock. Oh, here, straight from Panasonic: P50S60 w/free shipping, $650. That's not too bad. I would expect you might be able to find something cheaper though as we get closer to BF. Not certain though. Stock is getting low on these sets it seems.
I'm not very familiar with the ET60... Its supposed to be a step up from the well reviewed E60 (E60 doesn't have 3D though) but it doesn't have a better picture at all. And I have no idea how prices in UK correlate to what we have here. Is that one used for £538.77? For the US that works out to $866.77. No way in hell would I spend that much on a 42" TV. But again, maybe that's a good price for over there? I'm not sure.
As I'm typing I'm looking through some reviews and such. Seems like the ET60 is a pretty good set. To me though I would think 3D wouldn't be worth it unless you had a TV getting up above 50". I personally would rather pay the same price for a non-3D set and get one that's bigger. But you have to go with the features that you want in the end.
EDIT: Just saw your edit about the lag and ghosting.
Maybe look into some LG sets? I know they have at least a couple passive 3D models.

I don't want to start this thread down a topic that has been covered elsewhere in detail, but frys.com is listing the 60" ST60 for $997 if anyone is interested. See here and here. A lot of people have been able to get price matches at Best Buy and Amazon (I got it through Amazon). That's an insane deal if you can get it.

Told them that it was BS some people got it and some didn't, and it worked. Yay for being persistent?
Edit: Question on the noted input lag issue: How bad is it for people who don't play fighters/FPS? I mean, 70-100ms doesn't really sound like a lot to me, but.. who knows?
toloveistorebel Impressive. Most impressive. Central FLRegistered Userregular
Awesome, good job! From everything I've read on the set, the majority of the people complaining about lag are ones that don't own the set and are just regurgitating what very few have actually complained about. Most of the people that actually own the set are saying that its totally overblown. That doesn't mean that its not there. Things might feel a little sluggish at first until you get used to it probably. And for some people they don't like it at all. But really, if you're worried about competitive scores and such you're most likely going to want a small fast 24" monitor or something anyway. Just my thoughts.
What shipping mode did you choose? I should have just done regular so I could get it here Friday. I instead chose scheduled and had to set it for next Wednesday I was too excited and didn't think about it lol.

Yeah I'm not either (ok, that may be a lie haha). Our current TV hasn't totally crapped out yet. It almost works out perfect since it comes in right before Thanksgiving. I can let it sit and run slides and such all Wednesday through the next couple days while we're with family. I'm pretty pumped.

I need to reorganize the room it's going in and figure out what to do with a 100lb+ CRT.
I'm still looking around for whatever the best 40/42 inch TV there is on the market. If anyone can recommend me something, please do so, along with whatever the best sound bar to pair it with would be. I've never bought a sound bar before since I've only ever bought Sony's that come with good sound.

A good friend of mine just bought a Yamaha sound bar to go with the television in his bedroom, and it sounds great! Much better than I ever expected a soundbar to, actually.

I still say the mid-range LCDs are kinda meh. What are your reasons for staying in the 40" range? For that price I would suggest the Samsung PN51F4500. Check out what The Wirecutter says about it. Its a 51" 720P plasma set around the same price. It may or may not be a better choice for you. Can you give us a little info on your viewing area, lighting situation, what you'll be using the TV for, and how far you plan to sit from it?
A couple years ago I was looking to spend below $1000 on a TV and ended up getting the PN51D450 for about half the price. I was worried that not getting a 1080P TV was going to be awful but after researching and reading a ton of reviews I decided it wasn't a big deal. Of course it all depends on what you want it for. If you sit close to it or just can't fit a 51" TV in your space then that changes things. But if you sit anywhere around 9' or more away, it should be great. Even with less pixels the movie watching experience is awesome. As well as games and such (though I will say PC games won't be quite as good as on 1080P since you can adjust everything so finely).
EDIT: The PN51D450 is the 2011 model of what is now the PN51F4500 for 2013.

And yeah, a decent soundbar can sound really awesome. We have a discontinued LG that is ok. It sounds good but its kinda crackly at times. From hearing them in person and reading about them, Sony soundbars are really awesome. This one will give you a lot of bang for your buck.
EDIT: And I definitely recommend one with a subwoofer

Just read the review of that 51" plasma, seems like a great TV, and the power ratings aren't bad at all! Is there anything that can be done about the "camcorder" effect of having a high refresh rate? I know on LCDs you can change it. My wife and I both don't like the look.

So we were at video only today and they already were doing Black Friday pricing so were able to pick up that samsung PN51F4500 for $430. Looks like a great TV!

Do you mean like the Soap Opera effect on some 120Hz and 240Hz LCDs? The 600Hz on a plasma doesn't really translate the same way. The technology is totally different in how images are displayed and its not really comparable. Why they use 600Hz for plasmas I don't know. Plasmas don't have the Soap Opera effect though. The motion is MUCH more natural and cinematic. Its one of the draws of plasma.
$430 is an awesome price! Definitely check out AVSForum and see if there's an Owner's Thread or the like for the TV. They will have a ton of info on there and some calibration settings that will be really good. Congrats!

Yea the soap opera effect! You're totally right though, this plasma is smooth and sharp in a completely different way. Can't tell that the set is 720p either, it's so crisp. Already watched a bunch of movies, from Beverly Hills cop, the descendants and pitch perfect. They all look great. I wish I hadn't forgotten my blu-Ray of pacific rim at work though. I feel that it would be a good showcase movie. Lots of vibrant colors mixed with deep blacks.
Ordered a digital to analog converter to pipe the sound to the Logitech surround system I use.
On that note, should I go with a good 3.1 system or are soundbars decent? I'm ok with shelling out some cash for a good receiver and speakers, but if a good $200/$300 sound bar with sub can do the job, I would rather go with that until I do a true home theater.
Missed Tolo's post on soundbars, they had the one you recommended as well, so might have to pick that up after the new year.
Edit Edit: Looks like AVS Forum is putting together a soundbar buyers guide. Most excellent.

Awesome, glad to hear you're liking it! Yeah I haven't watched the full movie on my D450 but the 1080P trailer for Pacific Rim looked absolutely stunning. Definitely a great movie to showcase the prowess of plasma. I always enjoyed watching the Transformer movies too. The night time desert military outpost scene near the start of the first movie is an awesome scene because of the details and darkness. Sounds awesome with a good sound bar too!
On that note, my ST60 gets here Monday (I was able to get the delivery date moved up from Wednesday)! I've got the full Pacific Rim movie now as well as my other collection. Can't wait to get the settings nailed down and start watching some stuff (I'm going to be running some break-in slides for the first week or so while we're at work to evenly break-in the panel). The 3D should be fun too since I've never had a 3D set before. Hopefully some of my games support 3D. Games in 3D should be pretty awesome.

Also, yeah I totally forgot about the set only having an optical out for audio. That was a real bummer when I got my set originally. Any newer sound bar/reciever will have optical and/or HDMI passthrough now though anyway though.

I just saw my first 4K TV in the wild The picture on that thing was so gorgeous that my eyes melted back into my sockets and went down my throat drowning me in my own juices as I passed out and died gurgling right there in the store. Man I leave a beautiful corpse.
Shit, now I must start making plans of how to "accidentally" break my current 73" 3DTV... >.>
toloveistorebel Impressive. Most impressive. Central FLRegistered Userregular
The only issue is there is no content yet for 4K. Once more is available it will be awesome. Or for PC gaming. PC gaming on a giant 4K screen would be freaking sweet. Pacific Rim playing on that 70" 4K TV is still just 1080P content though. I'm not sure how the upscaling works on that, but I would think that it would still be a comparable picture to any other $4000 70" TV. That's probably the main thing that makes these 4K TVs look so awesome in-store: regardless of number of pixels, its an expensive high-end TV, and they usually have awesome picture quality. Once the content catches up I hope 4K OLED becomes mainstream and doesn't cost an arm, leg, and possibly a liver to buy. That will be the ultimate

I would probably go with that Seiki before the others. Those prices are just nuts though! Personally I'd rather spend more and get something with better picture like the Samsung we were talking about a few posts ago. But its hard to argue about a $230 50" TV!

My P60ST60 has arrived! It's still partially in the packaging and running the D-Nice slides while I finish up my work day. It's recommended that you run the slides and nothing else for the first 100 hours if you want to use D-Nice's settings. I'm not going to follow it to the letter though. I'll be running slides while I'm at work for 9+ hours a day and then watch full screen movies and such at night for the first 100-150 hours. Then I'll just use it as normal after that. Cnet has said that break in isn't required for their settings so I'll probably just end up with those in the long run. I'll report back tonight or tomorrow about the picture after we watch a movie or two tonight!

Magus`The fun has been DOUBLED!Registered Userregular
Well first off, it is usually recommended to give plasmas a "break in" period. This is largely debated and some people think its pointless. Some people run certain video content or slide shows for a certain amount of hours straight to wear in the panel evenly and quickly before watching anything. Others just watching full 16:9 movies for a while to break it in.
D-Nice though is a professional calibrator that is well respected on AVS Forum. He has a set of settings that he arrived at after breaking in the panel a certain way and then calibrating. In order for anyone else's panel to resemble his as closely as possible with his settings, he recommends to use his break in procedure exactly. Basically since every panel will be slightly different it helps to make sure the panel is worn in to the exact point his was for his settings. There is an entire thread for it here. I know his posts say that his slides are "not for break in, etc." but I figure that if I want to wear in the panel as evenly as possible, along with using the set in between, its a good idea. I'm way too impatient to just stick the set in another room for 4 days lol.

The reason you don't want to have any kind of static images (network logos, game HUDs, etc.) is that plasmas are most susceptible to image retention or uneven break it for the first 100-200 hours or so. Thus using the slides ensures every pixel is worn exactly the same. This doesn't mean that you will have any problems at all if you don't do a break in period though. It really is just preference.

Yea I've seen no image retintion issues at all, and have watched a few 4:3 ratio shows, ran GTA5 with its mini-map, and things like that. Probably clocked 30 hours on that thing at least already.

It doesn't need to be an amazing name brand. My current 6 year old Phillips TV from wal mart is still going strong.
I'm considering these two:

There's also supposed to be an Emerson 50" for about the same price at Walmart.
These prices seem really good, so I thought I'd check and see if it was a trap.
