Finally pulled the trigger and ordered a 75" Samsung Q70 from Amazon with delivery scheduled for Dec 9th (next Monday). I'm seeing mixed results online about it being able to use G-Sync but Rtings just added a note on 11/28 about it be G-Sync compatible via manually enabling it in NVIDIA Control Center. But even if there are currently issues I'm hoping they will eventually get resolved and I didn't want to pass up the discounted price.
So I got a Samsung 43" UHD 4k tv and I think...I can't stand it? It just doesn't get bright enough when I'm watching certain movies.
I'm watching the mandalorian and subtitles are washed out. The brightness is constantly changing (despite every setting I've tried) and I just feel like the colors are never quite right.
I've turned off every auto brightness setting i can find, set it to movie mode with standard colors. I'm using the Disney+ app, so there's no HDMI issue. It's maddening. I read a review just now on a website that says:
"This is a decent TV for watching HDR movies. The TV has excellent native contrast ratio but lacks local dimming to make blacks deeper and improve picture quality in a dark room. Furthermore, it cannot get very bright and does not have a wide color gamut to make highlights pop and deliver the content as the director intended."
I just...I'm very bad at this stuff. I was wracked with indecision before i bought it, and now I'm wracked with indecision on wether I should keep trying to fight for a good setting or just return it and deal with this all over again with a different tv.
What makes me the most angry is how when I press the Home button, a bunch of stuff pops up and the screen gets nice and bright, like I want it, but then it goes away when the home button menus disappear.
Just an update to this. I couldn't stand how washed out the colors were and how dark the 4k was, so I returned this about bought the samsung q60R instead for about 200 more bucks. It looks so much better it's not even close. I don't know how they get off selling a tv with such horrible color ratios on it, but I guess not everyone is watching kids shows and british bakeoff non-stop like I am.
The annoyingly colorful smart TV interface should be even brighter now.
Yesterday morning, I was supposed to get a Samsung Q70R to replace my Q6FN, since Samsung actually approved my replacement the start of November. But fuck you too Best Buy. Even Samsung doesn't text me "We'll be there in 15 minutes," and leave me calling them 2 hours later because they didn't fucking send me a cancel notice.
Why was it cancelled? If they sent you a "we're on the way" that means the delivery agent actually clicked the button on their phone to say "I'm going right now and am X minutes from the client." That part is not at all automated.
The fuck I know. The text came at ~10:38 saying "Your estimated delivery time is at 10:50"--which makes it sound like it was automated though activated by some confirmation. Two hours later, I'm calling Best Buy asking what happened (since technically, it's still within the 7 to 1 delivery window). The next day, after a couple of phone calls the prior evening, I'm waiting at line in Best Buy (calling these people on the phone is stupidly ineffectual), paying $20 to schedule a pick-up of the television set and rescheduling for next Saturday morning.
Yeah, Samsung hasn't been great, but fuck Best Buy. Samsung's stupid orthodoxy and rigid adherence to its own rules doesn't even compare. Samsung never told me, "Oh, yeah, we already sent you this replacement part which we said was free, but you need to pay $20. We're sorry, but you need to pay us $20."
Fuck Best Buy. I might buy another Samsung television, but I'm not buying shit from Best Buy again.
So yeah, basically we have an app on our phones with all of our orders for the day on it. In the morning we acknowledge the route by pushing a button which triggers the "today's the day!" email. Then the agent clicks another button to en route the first job which triggers the "Agent X is on the way, estimated arrival time is BLAH" email. We enter the amount of time it will take to arrive, so for it to be cancelled with no notice sounds to me like a truck broke down, but why did nobody call?
How shitty for you, again I'm sorry. What's this $20 stuff to pick up the TV though? I'd push back on that, complain to the 800 number. You might get a gift card out of it.
I need to get rid of my plasma and so was looking at Best Buy's website about recycling. That $20 fee is the cost for Best Buy to take away the old tv when they deliver a new one. So maybe wires got crossed and Best Buy thought Synthesis was getting a new television?

I kind of doubt that. For starters, I already paid it, which was the only way I could schedule an appointment. Second, the last person I called on a 800 number at Best Buy basically turned into crackling semi-audible conversation where the person on the other end end kept repeating, "All right, I'm going to do this even though it could cost me my job," four or five times. It's why I ended up going to Best Buy in the first place.
So I suspect any such "push back" involves me going...what? "I'm angry I had to pay $20 when I didn't previously." Leading to 1) "So what?" 2) "Oh, you'll need to arrange that with the store, we can't handle anything on our end." or 3) "All right-BLZ-I'm going to-BLZ-even though it could cost me my job if they-BLZ."
I can guarantee any 800 call is going to involve a minimum half-hour of waiting. Possibly triple that. Then again, I basically called Best Buy 2 to 3 times a week (sometimes more) for at least four months, so that's not new. Insanity that it is, I actually listed to my 79-year-old father and wrote Best Buy's corporate office a long-form letter in the mail. Not that I expect to do shit (I sent it to the Office if Public Affairs because where the fuck do you send a letter even if you expect it to get read?), and compared to an hour-long phone call, it was relaxing and only cost me a stamp and an envelope. I might do that again if only to inconvenience someone in Minnesota.
EDIT: I'd also have to ignore the last month of Best Buy's behavior to pretend there isn't a possibility they wouldn't basically hold my rescheduled delivery hostage to that charge. Because that's what they did at the store. Which is assuming they don't fuck up this Saturday in turn.
EDIT EDIT: Well, it took 30 minutes on hold (not including the thirty minutes wait time) they said they'd issue me a gift card (since I can't very well go to the store and ask for a refund, because that's not going to happen). In theory, I should get that in "10 to 15 business days."
Of course, they also said they'd deliver my television on Saturday, so who the fuck knows. Best Buy is full of fucking incompetents.
My Samsung Q70 was delivered and I got it partially setup last night. Using the Rtings settings with a couple changes and HDR content looks really good.
Watched a couple minutes of Mandalorian in HDR this morning before work and even my daughter was impressed. She was talking about how we needed to rewatch all the Mandalorian episodes in 4k HDR and find some other 4k HDR movies to watch on the new TV.

I don't know why but I've always been impressed with the way Hot Fuzz both looks and sounds on modern TVs and sound systems. Edgar Wright knows what's up.

Warcraft on UHD.
My own Samsung Q70R was delivered, as promised, Saturday and my Q6FN hauled away. Now I'm just waiting on a gift card in the mail from Best Buy (yeah, we'll see).
Some observations on the changes: the smart TV UI seems to be set for 60 hz now, rather than 30 hz (though this can sometimes drop you "tax" the system, for example switching between the integrated apps). The picture quality is improved, particularly in regards to the full array backlighting, over the Q6FN. The bezels are smaller and the TV is, surprisingly, thinner (and also has integrated channels for thin cables to run along, including the power cable, in the plastic backing and feet). In fact, as far as I can tell, it's practically superior to the Q6FN in every way, even if the differences are sometimes very small. There were some minor QOL improvements in terms of settings as well, but nothing major (probably could've happened on the Q6FN via update as well). Response times are improved, though they were already quite good on the Q6FN.
The QLEDs are still possibly the best television you can get for an Xbox One X, so there's that, and HDR is still gorgeous (or perhaps more so). So I'd actually still buy a television from Samsung potentially, though ultimately I would be weighing the advantages and disadvantages of OLED screens for gaming purposes. I definitely would not buy another television from Best Buy though.
Since this is as close to a home theater thread that I can find I had a question someone might be able to answer. I have an old Yamaha receiver (around 10 years) and one of the speakers takes about 15 mins to start getting sound to it. It's not the actual speaker itself that's the issue. I've swapped speakers and the problem remains whatever is hooked up to it. Is this something that I might be able fix or do I need to start looking for new receiver?

Throw it away. Yamaha still makes great receivers and they're not that expensive.

There should be an electronics repair shop that can fix that for you.

Maybe, but $1-300 to fix the receiver is a lot when a new one isn't much more than that. If this were a high end Macintosh or even a Marantz I'd agree with you, but not for a regular consumer level receiver.

You'll note they never said what model they have, just the brand. Yamaha's current top of the range home theatre receiver is $3k.

It was like $400 when I got it. So it's probably not worth the repair cost considering I can get one with more modern capabilities for that price now. Thanks for the responses!
So, in "Synthesis notices the darndest things," I'm pretty sure the Samsung Q70R's smart TV interface actually is set to 60 hz, unless you have game mode on, in which case it because 30 hz (as the Q6FN was).
Got my Samsung Q70, 4k Denon receiver, and Sony UHD Bluray player all setup and working this weekend. Took a bunch of time but I finally got everything setup properly with activities on my Harmony Hub and synced with Alexa so I can voice command for them as well.
My PC running 4k/60/4:4:4 color is pretty great playing Destiny 2 which is the only game I've tried with the setup yet. I can also run 1440p/120 if I need to on this TV but for now I'm preferring running in 4k because it's so pretty. Watched first half of John Wick UHD Bluray and it is really impressive. Otherwise have been predominantly been watching streaming 4k material in various Samsung native apps, Netflix, Disney+, AppleTv. They all look great but UDH Bluray does look the best for sure.

I haven't even tried 1440p and over 60 hz with my desktop considering it's permanently connected to my living room television. I always just go for desktop mirroring (2160p/60).
Considering Samsung bragged a bunch about the higher possible framerates, I should probably give it a try, but that HDMI cable is old. Like, almost 10 years old and 35 feet long (the gauge eats other lesser cables for breakfast). Though yes, a 2160p image is by definition going to be shared than a 1440p image, and that's putting aside that it's the television's intended resolution.

On Samsung to run 1440/120 you have to enable Input Signal Plus to even have that option or the 4k/60/444 color space option. My original cable couldn’t enable it so I bought a cable that supports 8k/HDMI 2.1 and then was able to get it working.
Hey @Shadowfire I got everything set up with my new LG OLED C9 and the sanus mount you helped me pick out. The TV is amazing, I am so happy. And the timing couldn't have been better since just after I bought the new tv, my plasma up and died.

Mine actually came with that on by default--though I'm plugging it into an Xbox One X, so it automatically turns on Game Mode as well, so that's probably why. The amazing future of smart televisions. Still, a good thing to keep in mind.
I need to try running my TV at 1080p / 120hz instead of 4K / 60hz sometime. I tried doing some PC gaming on my TV a bit after I got it but there was a lot of screen tearing and it was like 30fps cause it was 4k, so it felt pretty bad. I think I started to feel a bit motion sick, too. Hopefully the less demanding resolution and increased refresh rate will help make it more viable. It's also possible that I'm just too close to the TV, too, and it'd feel better a bit further away.

It sounds from your experience that 120 hz gaming--in real terms, 60 or 70 or 50 to 115 hhz gaming, back and forth--might also make you motion sick from the sound of it. Assuming you hadn't already figured that out, of course.

The Xbox one supports Dolby Vision now but only for streaming, is that right? No support on 4K Blu-ray discs?

I think so. To be honest, I actually don't know about any UHD disc releases that are actually formatted for Dolby Vision and not HDR10. Which doesn't mean they don't exist! Because Dolby Vision-capable players do exist. I just assume they only support Dolby Vision-enabled apps.
Like the Xbox One. Which, last year, was literally only Netflix. The Dolby Vision standard is kind of...fragmented? It isn't used in games.
I haven't heard of a single game on PS4 that uses Dolby Vision either. The HDR10 standard is free--or a lot cheaper--after all.

Dolby Vision is on most of the 4K movies I've bought, and my player supports it. Ah well.

Really? I need to check closer. I don't think it's on a single one I've bought, but I own less than a dozen. I suspect neither Sony nor Microsoft want to pay Dolby to enable it (I don't think Playstation 4 has Dolby Atmos support, but Xbox One does...but you pay a $10 fee to use it across multiple devices...so it's not impossible).
I doubt any games on either will support it. Maybe in the next consoles.
EDIT: A cursory examination suggests that, unlike Xbox One, Playstation 4 does not support Dolby Vision period. Not discs (because the PS4 cannot play UHDs, so not really up to them), not streaming apps. The reason is the same (along with the Nvidia Shield): Sony probably doesn't want to pay the fees. :?

I don't care about the games so much, but the movies I do. I was hoping to disconnect my Sony Blu-ray player if I get a One, but guess not!

Alrighty, looking at getting a new set for my bedroom in the 43-49" range next month. I'm totally brand agnostic and want the best black levels and HDR wizardry one can find in the $5-700US range. What should I be considering?

LG series 8 is on sale typically $5-600, as is the Sony x800G, and the Samsung 8100. I would not bother with the Q60, is not really any better than the 8000.
Stepping up a bit, the Sony 900F comes in 49" and is just above the top end of your price range, usually on sale around $7-800. It's a fantastic set with a brilliant picture. The Samsung Q70 is in that range as well. I've documented my hatred of Samsung in this thread before, but they do have a great picture, and they sell well for a reason.

Hmmm...I'm liking the looks of the 900f. How's the input lag on games? My current reading suggest that the Q70 outperforms the Sony there, but if it's not too much more I'll take the more vibrant color and HDR performance, as I won't be doing any online fighting or rhythm games where I'd be looking to minimize lag.

I couldn't tell you, honestly. The Q70 does definitely win out on input lag, but the difference is small enough that you may not notice it. That's completely an individual call. If you're not a big fighting game fan it may not make a difference.

Shadowfire strongly hates Samsung, as noted. Some of us are wary of any OLED option for gaming due to all the static screen elements (it's less a problem outside of gaming, and basically why OLED PC monitors are still a nonstarter). At the price point your describing, sub 50", of the three Samsung is going to have way less input lag (LG's sets are painfully average in that area until you get over $1000 or more), but I'm a bit skeptical of how much that matters to most people. Sony might be stronger than LG in this area. If you're really worried about input lag, Samsung is pretty much always going to have better options than either LG or Sony at any price point, you just need to actually buy the right set (even the Q60 has better input lag then some LG sets at twice the price, Samsung has given way more thought to the issue for whatever reason). But at the risk of sounding patrionizing, I'd be more concerned about overall picture quality (and want to see examples in person).

Nothing major out of CES this year so far (didn't really expect much, MicroLED and such is pretty far away still commercially). LG is launching a "budget" 48" OLED that would be a great gaming monitor for folks that are ok with taking the risk of burn in.

The rollup tv actually coming this year is kinda big. And the 65" is only $60k!

Watched a couple minutes of Mandalorian in HDR this morning before work and even my daughter was impressed. She was talking about how we needed to rewatch all the Mandalorian episodes in 4k HDR and find some other 4k HDR movies to watch on the new TV.

The x2400h is out of stock, which is what I ended up getting, but the x2500h is basically the same and $20 more to account for a phono input.
You could also pay more and get a 9.2 receiver if you want.
You'll note they never said what model they have, just the brand. Yamaha's current top of the range home theatre receiver is $3k.
Which....makes sense, I suppose.

Edit: Sanus is thebomb.com.
Mine actually came with that on by default--though I'm plugging it into an Xbox One X, so it automatically turns on Game Mode as well, so that's probably why. The amazing future of smart televisions. Still, a good thing to keep in mind.
It sounds from your experience that 120 hz gaming--in real terms, 60 or 70 or 50 to 115 hhz gaming, back and forth--might also make you motion sick from the sound of it. Assuming you hadn't already figured that out, of course.

Did you pull the trigger? I'm getting around to buying another tv as my kids are fighting over our current one.
