It's not really a fair comparison. Saint's Row the Third has really set the bar pretty high in the whole "I hope no one ever seems me playing this," area.

EDIT: In retrospect, if it was a direct nod to SR3, they should have done something fairly obvious, like play that "Power" song.

Watching the trailer, it's very technically nifty (at least to me). But it having 708 dislikes doesn't surprise me too much.

theory goes in blood money, the grotesque hypersexualization was aimed to get you repulsed by sexuality, like an asexual sociopathic killer might be, and therefore all the more in the mood to slaughter people just to stop them shoving their gross tits in your face. hitman series does some good work at getting you in 47's shoes sometimes.

dunno what the nuns are for tho.

i don't see how you could presume that this has anything to do with saints row other than that the title has "saint" in it

but i mean, it's not like the vatican is a reference to saints row so

All the gameplay footage in the trailers that run during the Sniper Challenge demo looks like regular Blood Money-type gameplay to me so I have no idea where they're aiming for with that video.

There's one scene where he's being questioned at what looks like a road checkpoint in some Latin American country and he detonates a car as some officials seem to be checking his papers but that's the only real over-the-top "action' I can remember seeing. Definitely no Sex Nuns™

That is probably the best video game trailer I've ever seen. Just so amazing. If you didn't laugh out loud at that trailer, you're dead inside.

Well, at least we're getting a diversity of opinions.

There are people who think S&M nuns with machineguns are really, really uncomfortable to watch, and there are people (person?) who think they're are the greatest thing ever.

S&M karate nuns with machine guns are awesome

but they aren't really what I associate with Hitman

It's not so much uncomfortable to watch as it is stupid and unneccesary. I think we all expect the game industry to do a little better with their marketing than "you've got a penis! look, sexy nuns! buy our game!", especially with an IP like Hitman - they just don't need to do that shit to sell it, and stooping to it is kind of insulting to their audience.
I'm not sayin' games should be all murder and no skin, but the content should fit the franchise... this just seems like it was obviously contrived to slap some meat in our eyes to drum up interest in the game, which is at best, dumb.

Right after the Bombcast starts getting me excited for Absolution, the new trailer turns me off a bit. In an over-the-top game like Saints Row, I'd be happy to see that you fight sexy nun assassins, but it really does seem odd for Hitman.

  • Options
    programjunkieprogramjunkie Registered User regular
If that represents the tone and style of my beloved Hitman franchise, that would be horrible, because I love all the Hitmans, even the stunted one. That said, the sheer over the top WTFness of that trailer is just priceless.

The trailer does the opposite of what a trailer should do and makes me more wary than excited for the game, and also embarrassed if someone found me watching it. Perhaps it's appropriate that the most recent Hark! is the return of Strong Female Characters.

Still, marketing and product are often pretty far apart, especially with CG trailers. Maybe the Naughty Nuns show up in...uh, a convent mission, or something, and even Blood Money had those 'beautifully executed' ads people mentioned. I'll wait and hear what people here say about it. Personally I'm hoping the whole 'kill Diana oooh edgy' thing is just misdirection, and the gameplay exceeds Blood Money's gold standard.

I think those guys on the BombCast said it best, Hitman is an impossible game to try to compress into a :30-2:00 trailer without just boring us to tears. It's tough to sell a game that's best feature is "spend hours trying to break this game in order to do the entire mission perfectly" in a 2 minute trailer. I'm sure it's going to turn out fine and be as good if not better than Blood Money, I still can't wait no matter what lunacy they keep pumping out in order to attract attention to it.

We can be sure it's not going to have the huge mechanical issues that Agent 47 did. Naturally.

Beyond that, it's all up in the air. Could be good, could be bad. I'll miss Bates, not to mention Jesper Kyd (was he still dumped? I think so.)

I don't really get some of the extreme outrage at the trailer. I mean, yes, it's dumb. Yes, there's some pandering sexualization going on. But there's some people out there screaming that it "fetishizes violence against women" and try to paint it as disturbing and I just don't see it. Pretty much any hint of sexuality goes out the window as soon as the actual fight begins. 47's takedown of the gang is pretty standard mook-killing. You could replace the killer nuns with killer priests and nothing would look out of place.

I actually think it's kind of refreshing to see a squad of female grunts.

The whole sexy nun thing is really stupid, I won't deny that.

But I don't think this is anything different than say, how Kitana in Mortal Kombat is sexualized and you can also rip her in half. The sex and violence are pretty independent of each other.

they could do an all-female group of assassins without being hyper sexualized

they could even still dress as nuns! and not immediately rip off their clothes to become SEX NUNS

    cause it's, ironic or something?

There was sexualization in the previous games, but it was always within context. The disguised female assassins at the porn mansion and heaven/hell party in Blood Money, for instance.

The latex nuns though? How does that fit into any context? Does latex work as an effective combat gear? Does the nun disguise serve a purpose? If so, how was that purpose achieved when they rip off the disguises shortly after departing the school bus? Why even bother with a disguise at all when they walk into the middle of the carpark and fire an RPG at the building? The trailer is just all around stupid.

Nun/holy man disguise makes for good assassin outfits yeah, no one really expects the priest at the wedding to be packing heat.

Guess we'll just have to disagree then. At least as far as fatalities are concerned, anyways.

I just don't see anything sexual about the violence here.

Doesn't mean I don't think the sexualization thing is dumb, but...I don't really see where the outrage is coming from.

I have a problem with the sexual pandering and the lack of any logic behind disguised assassins who don't seem to actually be using their disguises for anything beyond fetish fuel, but I don't really understand what's so objectionable about what is a pretty standard "hero takes down a group of bad guys" action sequence.

I've seen some pretty sexualized violence. Female character getting beat up, moaning, sweat and/or blood soaking their shirt, body twisting in pain in "sexy" ways. Fuck, comic books can be terrible about this, as it seems like a woman can't get KO'd without laying there in a sexy pose. To me, that is fetishizing violence against women. But in this all I see is a protagonist killing some mooks who happen to be attractive women.

Are people taking issue with anything specific in the action sequence itself? Or is the sexualization earlier in the trailer the full root of the problem? I suppose I can understand those who feel they can't be separated.

EDIT: I do, however, think the woman in the shower trailer is objectionable along these lines and the more I think about it the more it feels like there is a pattern here so yeah, I'm starting to understand where people are coming from.

Okay the crying I did not notice before, that's pretty...icky.

But I don't see the issue with the other two images. It's not like he's hitting bystanders here. Nothing offensive about fighting women who are trying to kill you.

But yeah...that first image is...over the line.

It's not crying, it's rain. My point is these look like snapshots of domestic abuse which is emphasized by sexualized females. It wouldn't feel so awful if these were grizzled veterans who seemed like actual killers who just happen to be women instead of hapless strippers.

Oh wow, is she really tearing up there? Is it even possible to go from zero to full tears in the time it took for 47 to kill her?

The other two images are fine because they are typical grunt ass-kicking, and beating grunts up is a hobby all genders can enjoy. :P

Point taken. I get where you're coming from.

Though even if that's just rain...the way her face looks in that image makes it a pretty unsettling image anyway. Ech.

I thought about editing that post to throw in a "they could even be attractive since that's not the whole problem" but figured people would know what I meant. Which is to say, these look exactly like models in fetish gear with stiletto heels and completely impractical nonsense to ever take seriously as lethal assassins instead of sexed up fantasy figures, and as fantasized figures their presence says different things.

To be fair, maybe they were supposed to be shitty at their job. 47 did take them down pretty easily, after all. :P

Man, now I wish they actually made the trailer like that. Just them totally tripping over their heels and making fools of themselves.

So obviously it is a pro-nun beating ad.

I dunno, amidst Saint's Row the Third's offensive content I think it ends up actually being more inclusive than most games on the market. I mean, you can play as a man, woman, MtF trans, FtM trans, cross-dresser, nudist, cosplayer, or furry and be treated exactly the same way by the rest of the cast.

I just hate that I'm supposed to feel shame and guilt for committing the hatecrime of being a straight white male while enjoying the latest summer blockbuster movie or AAA game or any form of entertainment media released in the last 100 years. I mean, I get it. 47 beating on scantily-clad battlenuns is offensive to womyn, scantily-clad people, and battlenuns, but what am I supposed to do about it? I've liked pretty much every other hitman game I've played so I imagine I'll want to play the new one, too, but if I purchase the game it automatically makes me a misogynistic racist butthole?
