Lag they're "working on". The other option is to just putz around doing your own thing and not do the giant space battles -- no lag there.
Learning skills are gone -- everyone gets close to the max learning rate now, but battleships still take several months to get into (if you want good skills). There are some good ships which take less time to get into, but I'm not sure exactly how long at the moment.
You can make (iirc) ~30 M Isk/h single-boxing sanctums in a battlecruiser (Drake). You can also make pretty decent money doing PI. It takes 2 weeks of training, but then you can make 15-20 mil/day for 15 minutes of work. Of course you can always make more money with more accounts.

Ah, so PI isn't actually a time-intensive activity that can be an alternative to, say, mining etc? I liked the idea of having one more option to invest time into, that wouldn't put me in the direct line of fire.

NPC 0.0 is safe in that you will always be able to dock at the station. On the other hand, getting your stuff out of the station may be difficult.
Even in conquerable 0.0 you usually have a couple of days notice to get your stuff out if things are going pear shaped.
Just liquidate or move your valuable assets before you unsub, or they might be inaccessible when you resub.

Because a lot of people buy timecards to sell for ISK. If you get a decent amount of income you can pay for your game time by buying timecards.
