I've often said that all the Steam groups for different games are pointless and never used for anything, but what the hell. Invite me anyway. Steam in sig.
With Steamworks, you never know what bounty may await!
I'm not really sure what you mean, but I wouldn't expect Brink to have any features that use Steam groups. As far as I know, the only games that use Steam groups in any way are L4D 1 and 2 with the group servers.
And if a game did have features such as group leaderboards or easily seeing group members that are playing, I'd say it'd be more convenient to just use the existing huge PA Steam group for all games with any such features.

Well up to this point, the only group that has held much traction has been Armadeaddon, because as you mentioned, L4D & L4D2 have tight steam integration. While the huge PA steam group does exist, it's frankly just too big, too unorganized to actually USE it for anything. I agree that ideally we'd just all hop in one big chatroom and organize people for game x or game y, but right now that just doesn't happen.
We do know that Brink will support Steamworks for just about every part of its PC multiplayer experience, so I'd imagine it will be similar to the way L4D works. That of course remains to be seen, but if it does work like L4D, then I think there will be some longevity in the group
I hope this game doesn't get flooded with instant respawn servers. Makes finding a place to TF2 kinda difficult.
I'm not so sure on that, largely because the whole concept of instant respawns would literally negate one of the most important features of the medic class: Being able to revive people instead of having them respawn.
Unlike TF2 if you have an instant respawn server then the medic class becomes pretty useless apart from buffs. Assuming the balance means that gameplay doesn't simply degenerate into everyone getting downed and then killed a fraction of a second later, the medic class will be pretty important, and having instant respawns throws a whole class out the window. So I'm not really sure that people would be willing to put up with that.
So basically I think it would be less common than in TF2, if prevalent at all. But I guess time will tell on that one.
EDIT: How common are instant respawn servers in BF:BC2? That would seem to be a good indicator since it follows a similar model. IIRC I never really had a problem finding vanilla servers with regular respawn timers.
I'm wondering how many shots it takes to kill a downed guy. Someone mentioned a page or two ago that except for that one video specifically showing it, we haven't seen much footage of downed people being killed. Given that you've just been dropped, and you're immobile, it seems like you're a fairly easy target, but I'm curious as to how much health you get. Will people have a fair chance of being revived during the fight, or is it only going to be people who get killed near the end of a fight that aren't immediately double-tapped out of existence?

In RTCW (and ET, IIRC) it took like 5 or 6 seconds to finish someone off on the ground, so you could do it easily when there were no enemies around but it was risky to do when there were.
Could I please be added to the XBOX list.

Guys. Guess how excited I am for this game.
Also, guess how awesome this will be.
Answer to both: SO MUCH.
I look forward to shoosting mans in and around bases with you folks on the TreeSiddy.
Here's hoping my FPS skills (as little as they may have been) have not left me!
Talk asterisk C, where is your server located? I apologize if I missed you mentioning it.
I am also considering "24/7 cs_office."
Talk, thanks for getting that set up.
Now that we have a Dallas server, where is the next best place for one? I'm thinking Chicago. I would also like help naming the server; I was thinking "Don't mess with [PA Chicago] Ted"
I'm probably a little too excited for this game, but there are a few things that worry me:
First, I'm not thrilled with the slide-tackle ability. Between that and knockdown nades I feel like I'm going to get knocked over a lot and it's going to piss me off a lot. Having knockdown with nades is neat, and should hopefully alleviate some of the semtex-spam I'm used to from Blops. Making melee attacks knockdown instead of instakill seems like an improvement. Adding in slide tackling just seems to make lights more annoying.
Second, I'm worried about the small number of maps. I'm not buying this bullshit about "well you play 2 sides of it so really there's twice as many!" I've never played an ET game, so maybe they really are enough, if every match is as different as people are claiming. I don't feel like TF2 payload maps play differently whether I'm on offense or defense. On the other hand, MNC has 4 (now 5?) maps and they never really got old, because each player's class and turret preferences really shaped each match uniquely.
Finally, I think it's pretty easy for these challenges to be either underwhelming or overwhelming. Looking at the number of guns and attachments, I can't believe that they'd make you unlock specific attachments on a per-gun basis...that'd be way too many challenges. On the other hand, they could easily end up with too few challenges, especially since they ramp up difficulties on the same challenge (more reusing). I have a feeling it'll be like SpecOps was in MW2...fun to dabble in, very entertaining with a buddy, but wanting to pound a nail through my dick by the end. Lengthwise.
I'm considering setting up a server for us Euroheads if we need one.
I'd be up for this. I don't see it being a problem as the servers are 16 man and I'm sure there are at least 16 of us Europeans about but out of curiosity could we make a list?

Every time I see that thread title I become sad.
It comes out here on a Friday. I have release day delivery but I live on the arse end of nowhere so it may not come. If it doesn't come on Saturday it won't be here on Sunday because no post that day. That leave me with Monday or even Tuesday. I could get this a week after you guys. Plus a pal told me because I ordered from amazon I'm getting the doom pack and not the, much better, fallout one. Don't know what's in it but Fallout, man!
Still, I do plan on my guy ending up a bright pink medic target so perhaps that doesn't matter too much.

Hi Pal. Also yeah I didnt care much for the bonus items but if I am going to get one I want the fallout one as Pip Boy is so much better than all the macho bullshit things but yeah as I said earlier I run into the same problem of maybe not getting it till Tuesday so i may just order it on steam to guarentee it.

I'll probably end up having it a week after release as well. I ordered from a UK site, but don't live in the UK. I don't really mind, though. Getting it a week later in return for a significantly lower price seems pretty good to me.

How many maps is there going to be in Brink? I haven't seen that mentioend anywhere.
If I recall correctly, the number's bounced between 8-10 (maybe 12?) depending on the what-if missions. It's tough to get a good read for me because half of the time someone gives a number they're also talking about how each one counts as two, and my mind is too occupied with its Brink-boner to do the mental math.

Hi there pal. Yeah at first I wasnt botherd about the extras but if i do get them id rather have a cool Pip boy things over the macho stuff. Which means i run the risk of not getting the game till Tuesday like your self or I could just get it of steam.
Are there any difference between the two sides? Trying to get my friends to agree on a side.
You aren't locked into playing one side. When making a character, you make an outfit for each team.
Gameplay wise, there won't really be more differences between the teams than playing terrorists or CTs in Counter-Strike or the two teams in TF2 on an attack/defend map.

I wouldn't worry about knockdowns too much.
For the slide tackle, they have to approach you pretty much unseen. If you see them coming, there's roughly a 90% chance you'll turn them into chunky salsa before they get a chance to slide into you.
As for grenades, barring some passive ability I am unaware of, the only grenades that knock down are molotovs, and those are one of Soldier's special skills.

Amazon's never let me down with release day stuff so I go with them pretty much every time, regardless of the shinies on offer. I guess there's always the risk of Royal Mail holding things up, but it's not something I've run into.
There's been a lot of talk of medics recently; is there anyone here who doesn't want to be a medic? I'm going to buck the trend and build a medium-body solider. Man, I have some wacky ideas!
I was thinking of going light medic (played medic back in RTCW, too) but operatives are looking increasingly interesting. The CPMA player in me refuses to be anything other than light, though.
Really every class looks fun to me except engineers, which I've never enjoyed in any class based FPS anyway.

I remember them saying from day 1 that frags were cooldown-based knockdown items, rather than massive AoE damage. I also read (although it's not confirmed) that the difference between molotovs and frags is that molotovs can be used in addition, and use up a supply pip (plus fire).
Slide tackle is something I just have to play to believe...all it takes is something dumb like invincibility frames a la COD's 2nd Chance to ruin a pretty simple mechanic.
Nonetheless, I'm getting it.

I don't recall regular grenades knocking people down, dunno.
Engineer sounds better on defense. Babysitting mine's and turrets while buffing fellow defenders.
I suppose they'll be useful for offense in the same manner, actually, when you're defending a timed objective (plant bomb, hack terminal, etc).
My buddy is all about the medic, so a lot of the time I'll have a pocket healer. In fact we've also been chatting about what some of the more powerful combos will be, especially for teaming up to complete side objectives and flanking enemies from spawn; like double operative, medic/soldier, etc.
Setting up a fireteam with a friend on steam chat looks to be a great way to play. A team within a team.

I thought I remembered reading that all grenades can knock people down, but now that I think about it I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly.

I just can't remember if my normal grenades knocked people over when I played now.
Either way, it's not like crazy grenade spam is a super viable strategy what with friendly fire and I think I recall grenades taking up supply pips (at least, I'm sure molotovs do, but I think frags might too)

Oh, I understood what you meant. I've always wanted Pistols to be a viable option in a competitive FPS.
