Oh man this game is soooo goooood. I ran into a couple bugs, one where enemies turned invisible, and one where the sound disappeared. Updating my Direct X seemed to cure those both though, and played for hours afterward with zero issues. Playing with the PA guys for a while there was fantastic, some awesome teamwork with us all together doing Campaign. The AI is really -hard- when you put it up there, they strafe, dodge, do power slides into your legs while shooting, drop down from the banisters and all kinds of craziness.
After reading the Joystiq review it just seems like that reviewer is playing a completely different game than I am, i dont get it at all. I have to agree on the server browsing badly needing a filter though, nothing sucks more than wading through a mass of passworded campaign games running on some dudes computer whilst trying to find the dedicated server.
I have a Nvidia card and i get the game running 60fps (my monitors refresh) at a constant basis, it never really drops much, and i have everything cranked all the way up.
Oh man, the first map is 100% unwinnable as Security... There is no way I can believe this was playtested extensively. We had them pinned in their spawn with 3 turrets just killing people as they rounded the corner into the only entrance to the rest of the map.
I was having unplayable choppiness with my HD 5850 and drivers 11.4 through 11.5a
I just cleaned those out and tried version 10.10 from forever ago and I can play! I still only get about 25fps in outdoor areas but it is no longer choppy.
Now to see if the frustration was worth all the effort.
edit:
First impressions:
What is going on? Not that many unlockable weapons or customizations visible. Are some hidden? Seems pretty lacking when the devs in videos talked this up like they made the iPad 3 or something.
Seems like it will probably be fun. Just got to fix the frames per second. Oh, and the field of view kind of sucks too. I used the console command to up it but it is awkward because sprinting changes it back to something else so it feels like it needs an adjustment to its fov.

all these problems people seem to be having with ATI cards make me wonder if it's going to be the same deal with my 5870 as well
Yeah but it takes like 2 hours, TOPS, to unlock everything.
That's what I've been hearing from the reviews as well. That combined with the actual option to respec your character largely makes this a must buy for me in itself.
I despise XP progression systems, but if it's just a means of learning the game, then this is something I like. I don't care if the cosmetic stuff takes longer, as long as all the functional stuff is available pretty soon.
If they're implementing it in that manner (and not some grindy manner), then I can already guarantee that most of the people here will:
a) Be able to complete a large number of those training missions by default without even needing to think about them, and
b) Will therefore will gain access to plenty of guns / attachments / whatevers right off the bat.
Totally called it.
In general from what I'm hearing, the game adheres to the good gameplay design decisions I was hoping it would, but it's just marred by bugs. That about right?
Can't seem to get this to run, oh well. Tried turning off all the advanced options, changed resolutions, updated drivers, and turned the graphics down. Still a no go. Time to wait for some patches to come around.
There's dudes on the Steam forums complaining that they hit max level in 2 hours.
Maybe they wanted Global Agenda instead? Who knows.
Fucking yes. I hate grinding for weeks off-and-on play to unlock shit in these type of games.
On the other hand, if you're creating a level-up system which takes all of a couple hours to maximize, then why bother including one in the first place? Just cut the middle-man and give everything straight-up, the first time you boot the damn game. It's almost as if it's a case of implementing a feature just because it's in vogue without considering why you're even doing it in the first place.

More or less. Game has generally good flow, lots of tactical options and enough routes for flanking. I'd would say the places to do parkour are a little limited, but then again, I haven't really explored all these levels in detail yet. It's very possible there are avenues and routes that are just not instantly visible.
The bugs will get worked out. There are a few sound issues with sounds not syncing correctly in cutscenes, and some general server nonsense (most of that stems from people running listen servers on their home machines), as well as some graphic issues with ATI cards (very possibly AMD's fault there). For the most part, however, the game is living up to my expectations, which I'm pretty pleased about.

God forbid people play the game to have fun instead of filling bars.
Plus it dampens the concerns about obtaining the light and heavy body types.
Anyway, saw a Ubisoft box come in today and guess what it was!
Assasins Creed At least I didn't have to be put through the pain of processing Brink and knowing I couldn't playing it for another few days. C'mon, embargo removal.

Just like in almost every other game, giving new players all the options at once usually makes it harder for the players to get started. At least with a short unlock system, it doesn't make experienced players want to shoot themselves because of how long it takes.

Interesting read, and I have to agree, I've only spent maybe an hour with the game and Joystiq's review is absolutely terrible.
The update about the joystiq review really sheds some light on the shotty journalism, and explains a lot of the review. After reading the Joystiq review i kinda went "Wtf?" because a lot of the things he bashes on are things that go away after you've spent a good 4 hours or so in the game, something the guy has obviously not done.
What can people tell me about the Party systems? Joystiq seems to indicate that there isn't a Matchmaking or Party system at all. I don't think the Joystiq review is accurate, and I haven't even played the game yet, but it would irritate me if there's no Party system.
Brink is a confusing beast. Inspired and engrossing, exasperating and chaotic. Putting my thoughts into words has been difficult, as a series of garbled, guttural noises are what I want to make whenever I try to describe this game. I want to excitedly shout about how happy it makes me, but I can't do so without adding important, overbearing caveats. This is the type of game for which the phrase, "There's always a but," was made. There is always a "but" with Brink, some sort of unusual downside to every bright spot.
Yet this is the online game I may play more than any other this year. It's a love/hate game of the highest degree, and I personally love it too much to hate it, despite understanding and accepting that anyone who does hate it will have every right and reason to do so.
I dunno, I've played 5 horus and I'm only level 11 (of 20). But yes, weapons/weapon mods can be gotten in an hour playing a tutorial basically.
This game is really fun, we need some 16 player PA action going though.
I'm a little sad about light body type, the weapon choice is so incredibly restricted.
The light long range rifles are fairly good options, though that leaves you with just a pistol for close up situations which can get pretty hairy.
And yeah, leveling up is pretty fast. Most people playing in vent this evening had heavy and light classes unlocked already. It's too bad the heavy shotgun kinda sucks, I really wanted to like that (the delay after the second shot kills it's usefulness as a "wall-o-lead" dispenser).

I love the barnett light rifle but as a primary with only a pistol sidearm? Yeah not so much, especially when as a light you're more likely to be running smack into someones' face anyway.
This game needs a small sawn off shotgun like the one in Just Cause 2. In fact it needs another shotgun in general, I've only seen two and they're both heavy and one of them sppears to be shit.

Man the IGN review is also really stupid...graphics rated under 7? Really? The game looks fantastic... And sounds rated under 7? The music, loud guns and atmosphere noises are increadibly well done, they actually stood out to me as being above average compared to a lot thats out there.
These negative reviews some of them just feel totally off. The Destructoid one so far is the most accurate, i can say i probably feel the same way. The game is REALLY good, but it does, at the moment, have a lot of things that need to be tweaked to make the fun more accessable. Things i am certain will be patched in now that people are pointing them out. I can safely say i am in the same boat of "This is probably the FPS i will go back to and play the most this year." Its very much my kind of shooter, and I am very, very happy they did not cater to the Call of Duty crowd, because i'm not much of a fan of Call of Duty.
You can actually set up your own multiplayer server and password it, and play levels completely solo with no opposition. You could probably grind out xp pretty quickly that way.

MG Nests really, really need to be improved.
There's basically no reason to ever use them over just standing next to it with an AR or SMG.
