I remember at Eurogamer Expo '07, they were saying that being bought by Disney gave them a lot more security.
Tis a shame that things aren't going well for them.
That was before Disney realized that making console games is hard.
What still boggles my mind is they made the decision to get out just after Epic Mickey was a success. Critically panned, but thanks to agressive marketing it sold several million copies.
More important is how are you suppose to trust and have faith in Sony again after all this.
I'm sure those who had to get new CC might be more then a bit wary of signing up again.
I can give you an answer to that actually.
They have to play it smart in how much they charge consumers for things. Their services / products have to appeal to more than the mass-market, they have to become indie-friendly. Additionally, and most important, higher-ups in the company have to be removed / resign / replaced. When the company changes business strategy, we can probably assume more safely that their operation behind online services will change.
Remember, EA became good guys in a sense (for a short time, before they became a regular business) after they got a new CEO. It can go a long way to restoring trust.
You're talking about an American or International vs. Japanese business culture here. I mean, yes, you're right, that's what they'd have to do, but it will never happen. Some lower level employees will lose their jobs and take the blame (perhaps some of the ones who raised alarms in the first place), but the execs will not.

Consumers purchase consoles for large blockbuster titles, and while Meat Boy may have had success, nobody gets a console for it. If your primary interest is in indy games, unless you're wasteful, odds are you're just going to stick to your PC (and maybe smartphone). In the least, I think the Nintendo attitude towards limiting access to development tools is on the money.
Sony's employees should learn from this experience, not be subject to mass firings. Would you want to work for a company that panics and starts firing people left and right at the first whiff of failure? The Japanese style is usually for the CEO to step down after a company makes a misstep. Usually I'd say that consumers don't give a flying fuck who the president of Sony is (and it would be a stretch for Howard Stinger to take the fall for this), but as this incident has been big enough to make the papers it may make sense to have Kaz (for all intents and purposes the public face of playstation) retire just to clean the air and reassure investors.

The one they're grooming to take the big chair? Doubtful. If anyone goes, it'll be Stringer, publicly. Then Kaz will ascend the throne as the faithful are mollified.
Sony keeps their golden boy and all they lose is guy he was going to replace in a few years anyways.
Is there something good about Kaz? He just seems like an entitled corporate jackass riding on the tails of Kutaragi. Honestly, I feel the same way about Reggie and Moore though. Do these people have any value?
While we're on the subject of Sony, a huge shipment of PSPs has been sent to stores for Golden Week so it's no longer supply constrained.

So HoD for PS3 if they ever figure "network stuff" out, HoDII for 360, something something something MGS, and the announcement of when the hell the LoS second DLC will ACTUALLY hit? I miss anything?
You know, I actually kind of hope not with the HoDII thing. I have such a love/hate relationship with that game. Like - the game is fun but Konami is selling it piecemeal. There are only about 6 levels in the original and you have to buy every new level and character at fairly high prices even for DLC. I'm not a fan of that at all. It just feels like the base game does not have enough content to really sustain it, but the DLC is too expensive to bother with (which, I know it's on sale but god damn, I'm not sure I want to give them the money still :P). On top of this, it's entirely recycled from the DS games so you know this costs them pennies to make. The levels especially.
If they did something *different* but along the same lines (i.e. sprite-based Castlevania stuff), I would support that though. As long as it didn't feel like we were being cheated on content again.
This reminds me though, I got LoS for Christmas and still haven't played it :P I am so behind...

While I do think a lot of people make a laughably large deal out of just a couple of dumb E3 quotes from years ago, I agree with you for the most part. I remember years ago when Stringer was given the top job, he basically said that Sony's focused too much on hardware and needs to catch up with their software. This is pretty much the only reason why Kaz is being touted as his successor, even though the PSN has been disorganised from the very beginning and has now suffered a worldwide embarassment. And yeah, the only reason why SCE is profitable at the moment is because the PS3 was always going to drop in price as quickly as it did.
As for Reggie and Moore, I'd somewhat agree but they're at the very least, both pretty good PR spokesmen. Moore in particular doesn't really seem to be doing a great job running EA Sports.
Oh and since when has 'Japanese business culture' meant throwing the blame on lackies? Cause I can't really remember any cases of this happening, at least in the videogame industry (and even if it did, since when does that never happen in the west?). Last I remember, when Japanese execs fuck up, the company tends to promote them into retirement (see: Kutaragi).
Mature-orientated 3DS title seemingly no longer in production; Metro 2034 gets a new name
It looks as if the once much discussed 3DS debut for gangsta series Saints Row has been cancelled.
THQ confirmed the news to Joystiq, saying: "We are not developing Saints Row: Drive By." No reasons were given for the decision.
Drive By was officially the title of the XBLA and PSN game, though THQ has previously intimated that it was being made in conjunction with the 3DS version.
If true, the news will also be a big blow for Nintendo. It was reported last June that the platform holder had pushed THQ to make the title as it was keen to try and shake the kid-orientated reputation that surrounds its portable machines.
“Nintendo really wants to launch with a very balanced portfolio. They really don’t want it to feel like a kiddie platform. They were very clear: they really wanted Saints Row on it," THQ's core games boss Danny Bilson said at the time.
“I believe it will do great, especially if Nintendo is going to go mature and really do a big mature campaign on it. It’s a killer game.”
THQ had also planned some sort of cross-compatibility between the game, which was also due for Xbox Live and PSN, and its big console triple-A cousins on Xbox 360 and PS3.
The publisher has also confirmed that its Metro 2033 sequel, tentatively titled Metro: 2034, has been given a final name – Metro: Last Light.
Seeing that it was also canceled for the home consoles, I'd say this has nothing to do with the 3DS and everything to do with THQ's huge losses recently.
Still, that really sucks. AT E3 that was one of the games that made everyone go nuts at the prospect, and small-ish side story or no, it would've been pretty cool.
Is there something good about Kaz? He just seems like an entitled corporate jackass riding on the tails of Kutaragi. Honestly, I feel the same way about Reggie and Moore though. Do these people have any value?
Reggie is the best public speaker Nintendo has ever had. He doesn't talk down to people or bores them, and he's very easy to understand (no weird pauses or stumbles).

Yeah, Reggie is a great pitchman for Nintendo. Not only is he good at trade show presentations, I've seen him on talk shows keeping up with the hosts. Not a lot of corporate spokespeople in the gaming industry have that kind of skill.

I think it has more to do with Red Faction Battlegrounds being an enormous bomb and THQ backing the fuck out of trying to exploit pre-launch hype with a PSN/XBLA title. The 3DS was just caught in the crossfire.
But hey, who cares, we're getting Metro: Last Light.
Man, Legend and Underworld completely rekindled my love for TR and Lara Croft.
Can't wait for the reboot!
This is why I totally don't understand why they are rebooting it AGAIN. Those were good games. They were basically reboots themselves. Underworld only sold poorly because of shitty marketing and being released next to a ton of blockbusters in a very busy holiday season.

As Scarab said and Drag reinforced, you can explain it in one word: Uncharted. The only way the twisted circle could be complete is if the reboot Lara Croft causes Lucasfilm to reboot Indiana Jones.
I just find it fascinating that they're trying to grubby Lara up and bang her around, yet they keep putting in less-than-naturalistic touches to make her "sexy," is all.

I can see how that is mistaken for a smile but it isn't. It's a grimace, her lips pulled out wide to each side. Also yay for explaining art.
If it were a grimace, she's be frowning.
I'm not gonna get into an argument about the angle we're looking at, let alone possible facial expressions people can have beyond smile, angry, and indifferent.
Yeah I just stared at her face for like 5 minutes and I don't see pleasure.
In fact in every screen Ive seen (are these really even screens though? Everything just looks like concept art to me.) she really has a look of "Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck" or "Holy shit thats scary".
Which I really like. I havent seen anything to suggest she's enjoying this reboot.

So is it a grimace, or is she experiencing some other emotion, then? Because if she was grimacing, she'd be frowning. I'm really a little amazed no one here can see the manipulation. Hell, her long hair's blowing.

I don't think she is making any real emotion-based expression. She is biting the cloth and pulling back really hard to make it tight. That is sort of the expression your face would make if you did that.

I dunno, I just really, really dont see it. It looks more like "this hurts I need to get this done fast and get the hell out."
