I'd prefer not to resort to ad hominem attacks when debunking other people's opinions. *shrugs*
I mean, TWEWY wouldn't have received the rave reviews that it did if it wasn't a good game. Nearly everyone I know has a good opinion of the game. I'm not sure how the story was "pop culture dredge". The setting was modern, but as far as I know, video games typically don't go for a bizarre supernatural Twilight Zone-esque otherworld where people compete after they died.
I have to agree with Sheep on Final Fantasy X's sphere system. The way that I played it, I customized everyone's grid (since you can add spheres into any node) and branched out early (now that I think of it, weren't there frickin' Teleport spheres that allow you to jump to anywhere someone else has been to before?). I praise the sphere grid for allowing you to develop the characters the way that you want to, while still allowing you to maintain a niche little role if that floats your boat. I've been enjoying Pen and Paper RPGs which allow complete freedom of development for a long time (as opposed to limited class-based systems) like FUDGE, GURPS, and more recently ORE, so systems that allow me to develop characters in my own direction are appealing to me.
I absolutely hate the fact that you have to swap in a character to get XP for that character. I wouldn't mind a half XP penalty or something. I know in my mind that it's more realistic (hey, you have to participate if you want to learn!), but in practice, it becomes this tedious obligatory switch-fest. If character assist-type attacks existed (like in Marvel Vs Capcom), it would be less tedium.
If anything, a major problem with Square-Enix & FF is that they try too hard to innovate with each new entry. Many of the individual games have great ideas that get tossed aside, never to be used again.
If only they were a Western company, we'd be playing Final Fantasy X: Ramifications and Final Fantasy VIII: Death In Sunset.
Well, except for Kingdom Hearts. They've worked hard to exploit that.
I still say that AP was twice the RPG ME2 was
It was, but I felt more awesome as Commander Shepard than I ever did as Mike Thorton.
I absolutely hate the fact that you have to swap in a character to get XP for that character.
Yeah, that was really annoying. The optimum way to play the game was to swap each character in and have them defend so that they'll get full XP which is obviously a fairly tedious way to play.
Except that with the way the game has a sort of rock-paper-scissors mechanic to its enemies, this means you just swap in whatever character is effective against whatever monster.
And what do you know, that means you get EXP for it!
mean, TWEWY wouldn't have received the rave reviews that it did if it wasn't a good game. Nearly everyone I know has a good opinion of the game. I'm not sure how the story was "pop culture dredge".
The whole premise of the game is centered around Shibuya district, it's shopping malls, and the hyper fashionable uh.... fashion that the local hipsters wear. Character stats change with clothing with specifics towards what clothing is "popular" depending on what shopping center you're in.
And mediocre games get awesome reviews all the time. It's a regular occurring topic in this thread.
Awesome games get awesome reviews all the time too.
And guess what, TWEWY is one of those awesome games.
You are literally the only person I've ever met who dislikes the game. And you're also are one of the biggest sufferers of a condition that makes you think that "my likes and dislikes are the STANDARD for quality. If I don't like something. It is objectively a terrible game. I am the arbiter on goodness and badness, peons"
The problem is that you say you don't like it for wrong things, false things, and stupid things.
Oh yeah, and your habit of calling anybody who disagrees with you a fanboy.
So, it's okay for you to call me a liar for disliking a game and giving the reasons, but you're gonna cry foul when I suspect that the reason you'd do so is out of being a fanboy? I can't think of any other reason why I'd be attacked and called a liar for disliking something about a game mechanic.
And it's not false. I mean, I did it. Someone else in this very thread has corroborated my experience by saying they too did it.
Final Fantasy as a brand stopped being relevant to me in in 1991.
To the point where anyone who says that any FF after 3, and especially 7, is their favourite game ever - I actually take that comment as a sign of stupidity. The same way you would look down on someone who liked trashy pop music or Twilight books.
The last good FF game was 10 and even that was only sorta OK. They have been creatively bankrupt for nearly two decades with that series. And it's not that I don't like the JRPG formula, because I do and many of my favourite games ever are firmly in that genre (Valkyria, TWEWY, Skies etc).
Maybe it has to do with not being fourteen years old and thinking that spikey hair nonsense is cool anymore. It's kinda embarrassing.
Hold up. Point of clarification because Square's stupid naming scheme muddles things up.
Do you mean the American FF3 or the Japanese FF3? I assume you mean the American one, because thinking people are stupid for liking FF6 is pure craziness. But FF6 (the American FF3) didn't come out until 1994 and you mentioned 1991 (which is the year after the Japanese FF3 came out).
Anyways, regardless of whatever financial troubles Square may find themselves in, they know they really have nothing to worry about. Because whenever things get really dire, they just finally greenlight the FF7 remake and they're golden. Especially if they realize they can charge people more by adding DLC outfits and all that jazz.
You are literally the only person I've ever met who dislikes the game. I'm one of those types of people that recognizes that very little of anything is great. Why should I personally review everything on a 7 - 10 scale?
But I'm glad that you've at least admitted that you have a personal issue with me. I mean, all I said was that I didn't like the game and why. I didn't say that it was universal. I didn't say you had to agree with me. You just assumed that because obviously something has to be wrong with someone if they disagree with you and your buddies, right?
So, given this conclusion, what were you saying about being the arbiter of quality?
Except you are wrong.
Right. So that other guy (Hahnsoo1) is just in on it to fuck with you? Oh. Maybe's a secret alt that I've been posting under waiting just for the right moment to ALSO fuck with you.
GMAFB.
Get over it. I dislike FFX. I have valid, corroborated reasons. Stop stressing. You're life will continue.

You have moronic and false reasons.
That you somehow managed to fail walking in a straight line.
Tell me, do you live in Europe. Because, maybe, just maybe, if you did and then selected the "Advanced" Sphere Grid when you first played it, then you might have this problem.
Not to mention that somehow a character designer can make a game bad.
The fun thing with Kimahri is to throw him in battles to get XP, but not use his level up points until later on once you've gotten things like Teleport Spheres & the various sphere keys. Then you turn him into a god.
Admittedly, you could do this with anyone, but it makes the most sense with Kimahri.
Y'know I was going to post something about FFX, but then I realized the mods are probably going to be looking at this topic soon and it'd be best to stay on topic.

The FF series constantly refined earlier ideas up until IX, and has continued to innovate since X. Looking down on people for being younger than you is sad.
I don't look down on them for being younger. I look down on them for their horrible taste in games.
Final Fantasy 7 is offensively trite, substituting buckles and zippers for meaningful character development and significant plot.
Forever more will we have to deal with the 'Aeris dying is the saddest moment in my life' bullshit from children too young to have even read a fucking half decent novel before they wake up screaming one morning in abject horror at how dumb and embarrassing their opinions used to be.
Seriously, I commend Square to constantly innovating with FF games. Because they've been insular, overtly complicated grind-fests since the mid-90s, featuring a smorgasbord of brain-meltingly bad design decisions, two dimensional characters and pithy, incoherent plots.
If there was ever a more perfect example of style over substance I'd like to see it.
Yeah, so back on topic, I wonder how much money Sony will lose from the PSN outage. At least it looks like it might be ending soon - there have been a few reports today of Sony internal staff & some developers playing online PS3 games so it looks like they're in the final stages of testing.
Even if Sony gets back online I admit if I was a costumer who uses the service I'd be a bit wary of the hackers taking another attack at it right off the bat. Imagine if they were able to strike again and take the system down again, how disastrous would that be for Sony, it's already bad enough.
This is the first time i have heard anyone say something negative about TWEWY.
I think it's reasonable to assume that Sheep is the Armond White of RPG's, and we should just accept that his taste in video games is so fucking weird that it's irrelevant and pointless to discuss.

Just because one guy did not like the game as you did does not makes his opinion any less valid.
Saying what you did though in such a negative way towards another poster speaks more ill of you then him.
I reckon at the very least they have set the date that they can release a DD only console back 5 years.
Considering most people still have crummy internet services DD only consoles are a good ways off. If the net/phone/TV companies have their way we'll never even see such things because it'll cost people a fortune just for downloading anything over a certain limit and use up all their bandwidth.
Canada and the US are getting worse and worse in that regard and rank far down the line in service and quality of said service.

Alright. Still, most people like the game. It's safe to say that his taste is out of line with the vast majority of people.

I take issue with the word "grind-fest", as you haven't had to grind in a non-MMO Final Fantasy game since VI (and only because the floating island and the world of ruin are evilly difficult when you first get to them). XI doesn't count (and whoo boy, it's a grind-fest). VII has a huge amount of character development between Tifa and Cloud (not as much with the other characters, admittedly) compared to most other RPGs. Yeah, their stories aren't amazingly appealing to me, which is one reason I don't like VII, but I will admit that they do a good job of fleshing out those two characters. The way I see it, FF VII's best value is setting up the story of Crisis Core (which is a remarkable game).
I'm also not sure how the plot of any Final Fantasy is "pithy" because they are fairly long and drawn-out affairs, often to the point of tedium. Pithy generally means forcefully concise.
I wouldn't call liking Final Fantasy games as having horrible taste in games, no more than I would call folks who like Madden or Halo as having horrible taste in games. It may not float my boat, but people who play good games also play Final Fantasy. It's not like playing Final Fantasy suddenly makes you want to play Farmville or something (apologies to Farmville fans).
Counterpoint: FiOS will reach the same kind of tipping point as broadband in a few years. Heck, I'm on a 20mb connection now only because it cost the same as a broadband one for my area.
You're right, it will be a few years off. But it's coming. It is an inevitability at this point. So many of my entertainment services are now coming down that one pipe - TV, music, internet, movies. I already purchase all of my games digitally because I'm a PC gamer, but in the console space it makes perfect sense to have everything DD only. Reduces piracy, raises prices and cuts down on their costs.
I never beat FF6. That Behemoth you fight on the way to Kefka? Never could beat it.

If he doesn't like TWEWY, that's fine. That's his opinion. I still don't understand how he could compare it to Final Fantasy though. The two are completely different in practically every way.
Yeah, so back on topic, I wonder how much money Sony will lose from the PSN outage. At least it looks like it might be ending soon - there have been a few reports today of Sony internal staff & some developers playing online PS3 games so it looks like they're in the final stages of testing.
Yeah I'll be curious to see. Not just direct impacts, but even lost sales due to lack of consumer confidence. Maybe they'll finally price drop PSP to a non-stupid level!
It's a shame that Sony has dropped the ball so badly, because a DD-only dedicated portable system makes a lot of sense. Say what you will about the PSP Go's flaws, but it's still pretty awesome to have dozens of PS1 & PS2 quality games accessible at any time I want because the system is small enough to fit in my pocket and I don't need to worry about carrying game carts.
EDIT: The PSP-3000 had a price drop recently. It's now the same price as a DS Lite ($130). Admittedly, both the PSP & DS should be at the $99 level by now, but at least the PSP isn't $170 like it was for so long.

You know what. I've seen some people who praise the game to high heaven, some people who liked it, others that thought it was okay, others that thought it had faults and basically go down from there.
That said most of what you and I see are here online isn't a real good indication of how a wider group of people like or not like a game. Such games basically are going to appeal to a certain group of people online and needless to say they are going to sing the high praises of it. Yet again that's only a fraction of gamers and might even be a niche based group of them.
When it comes to online reactions you have to take it with a grain of salt, we might praise some games that are flops while others succeed marvelously. Most of us for example slammed Kinect and look at how that's selling so it can go both ways. Mind you it isn't a game.
