Oh, it's a game. It's just not the same game that the consumers are playing when they take it home and hook it up. It's a game called "Let's see how much money we can make with a peripheral!" *grin*

It's a shame that Sony has dropped the ball so badly, because a DD-only dedicated portable system makes a lot of sense. Say what you will about the PSP Go's flaws, but it's still pretty awesome to have dozens of PS1 & PS2 quality games accessible at any time I want because the system is small enough to fit in my pocket and I don't need to worry about carrying game carts.

The only thing wrong with PSP Go is that Sony went out of their way to screw it over as much as possible. I mean, why on earth would you release a near identical system but with *more* features at a lower price at the same time? How did no one stand up and say "This is completely stupid?"

That aside, the digital end wasn't handled well either. No backwards compatibility for existing UMD owners, full price digital games, releasing *after* the physical launch, and not securing support of all developers (notably Squeenix). Yeaaaah....

Edit: Honestly, the Go should have been a success if Sony hadn't tried desperately to kill it coming out of the gate. I agree that digital content on a portable system is a great solution to the messy problem of cartriages. *sigh* Oh well...

EDIT: The PSP-3000 had a price drop recently. It's now the same price as a DS Lite ($130). Admittedly, both the PSP & DS should be at the $99 level by now, but at least the PSP isn't $170 like it was for so long.

Makes you wonder why they didn't spend more money on their infrastructure before releasing a DD only handheld.

Actually, Sony's been pretty good with digitally distributed PSP game prices ever since the PSP Go came out. Sure, there are a few oddities with games that have been out forever and still are at full MSRP, but for the most part, games get regular price drops after time and good sales are frequent. It's no Steam, but their pricing and sales tends to be better than MS & Nintendo.

The other stuff you mentioned is definitely true. I'm sure I'm not the only one who expected the PSP Go to be cheaper than the early models when it was first announced - attract players into buying the system so that you can make your money via game sales. That Sony did the exact opposite and priced it noticeably higher still boggles my mind.

Still is a nice piece of gear though, despite Sony's many mistakes. The fact that all NGP games are required to come out digitally is a big improvement. Hopefully, it won't be difficult to get a lot of internal storage on the NGP (either via a specific SKU or accessories) so I can basically treat it as a PSP Go 2.0.

The prices of the Go and that new phone that Sony has out actually made me wonder, are Sony themselves unable to really push down the prices as much as they want? Surely they know it would mean better sells but based on how much they lost with the PS3 originally maybe they were told they could not allow another such happening again and that's why we got the prices we did on those and why in the Go's case there were no price cuts for ages and doomed it.

Or maybe it was simply ignorance and they thought they could do what Apple did. *Shrugs*

I think there's only one antidote to all this froo-froo Japanese RPG talk. And that's the Duke.
"Of all the things I planned to talk about tonight, the gay robot sidekick was not among them." Randy Pitchford, current and final steward of Duke Nukem Forever, the video game that has been in development for longer than any other, shoots the front three rows of assembled journalists a glare. "But I am at a BAFTA event after all. You have to take a gamble with these things. Don't screw me on this please."

    ...

So why the gamble? Because Duke Nukem is a gung-ho, misogynist knucklehead; a Schwarzenegger parody whose quips have none of the wit of a Nathan Drake and whose character is as fleeting as the cigar smoke that leaks incessantly from his mouth. He is an anachronism born of gaming's juvenile years when the hobby was a grubby niche and its primary audience horny teenage boys for whom a pixelated cleavage represented the dizzying height of puberty-era titillation.

Today, every computer is "a window to infinite pornography," as Pitchford puts it with wry eloquence. What interest would a teenage boy have in a waxy-textured stripper? And what interest would a 30-something man have in a one-dimensional sexist monster? What hope has that of selling?

"Before we jumped in with the acquisition we all studied what the character and gameplay meant in today's world. We reflected on this a lot, looked at the internet and studied trends trying to work out if Duke has a place in the contemporary landscape of games. In that process it became clear that Duke Nukem had become a meme. I don't know why that happened. It has nothing to do with truly great Duke Nukem games because, honestly, there haven't been any. It's something to do with him: the character."

Pitchford has no doubts that Nukem is relevant today, likening the character to Tony Stark in the recent Iron Man films. "When we think about Duke: he is such an interesting guy," he enthuses. "He is nothing like me at all. He has the biggest ego in the world. In his universe everyone loves him. He is super rich and crazy. I think that is one of the reasons that Duke is so sticky at the moment. Most of our heroes in contemporary media have become emo. Even I am guilty of it. With Brothers In Arms [Gearbox's somewhat worthy-minded World War II-themed first person shooter series] we took a tone that was all about sacrifice and loss. Duke, by contrast, doesn't have any freaking problems. He just kicks ass. It's surprisingly fresh to have a guy turn up like that who doesn't give a crap."

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34617/Tits_Tuts_And_The_Last_Action_Hero_Pitchford_Defends_Duke_Nukem_Forever.php

Yeah, no. Duke ain't Morton Downey Shellhead. And I still think the Duke "meme" is based more on fascination on the fact that the damn thing is getting finished rather than overwhelming desire to play it. The Snakes on a Plane effect.

I doubt it. PSP has been out forever and it's still what, $120? I think Sony honestly believes that whole "just work two jobs" thing or something :D

The sad thing is I've wanted to buy a PSP for awhile now. The caviat to that being, I want it mainly for PSN stuff :P There aren't that many full retail games I'm interested in, and I really just can't justify $120 for a few downloadable PS1 titles and such :) If they'd just price drop the thing I'd actually buy one. But they are stubborn.

Getting back on track, our favorite analyst actually believes the Wii, despite all his griping, will outsell the PS2:
Pachter: I think Nintendo's hardware guidance says it all: the price cut is intended to keep sales from decelerating, not to trigger acceleration. Nintendo shipped 15 million Wiis in its fiscal year ended March 31, and guided to shipping 13 million this fiscal year, and it clearly knew two weeks ago (when it reported) that it was cutting the price. They appear content to sell 13 million Wiis, which is a phenomenal number, and cut price to ensure that will happen. I think they would like to keep sales above 10 million for several years, so expect further price cuts if it looks like sales will dip at some point in the future.

It's possible that the Wii will be the best selling console of all time, but it would take another 60 million, so the Wii has to keep selling after the Wii 2/HD/Stream/Café/Plus launches. Nintendo might keep it alive for several years, and if they do, it will probably eclipse the PS2.

    http://www.industrygamers.com/news/pachters-podium-wii-to-probably-eclipse-ps2-wii-2-with-no-hard-drive-would-be-a-surprise/

He also says other stuff. Apparently he has a monthly column at Industrygamers. Huh.

Okay, so does NPD release the numbers directly to them (after paying)? I'm not sure why, but I was under the assumption Microsoft kept internal figures. Might I be crossing that with Xbox Live?

Just ahead of NPD's U.S. video game retail sales figures for the month of April, Microsoft said its Xbox 360 led home console competitors for another month with sales of 267,000 units, up 60 percent compared to the same month a year ago.

Xbox 360 has been the top-selling home console at U.S. retail for 10 out of the last 11 months, Microsoft said, making it the best-selling home console for the year. It also saw the most growth of any current-gen home console on the market during the month.

Microsoft also noted strong performance of Kinect games, with Kinect Sports selling over 3 million units worldwide to date, and Dance Central selling over 2.5 million.

The company added, "in anticipation of another record year in 2011, Microsoft announced the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year."

Microsoft said total retail spend on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories during the month was $310 million, "still the highest among current generation consoles," the company said.

Top ten games at U.S. retail for the month included Xbox 360 versions of Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters and Michael Jackson: The Experience, according to NPD.

The PS2 benefited from its successor being 599 US dollars at launch, so people didn't bother getting it until price drops happened. I don't think the Cafe will have that issue, and thus the Wii won't take the throne from the PS2.

I don't know. I can't imagine PS3's price had that large of an impact on PS2 sales. If anything, I'd suspect a lot of those late, price-drop sales were from thrifty parents/etc that bought it purely because it was so cheap at this point (i.e. the kind of people that would have never bought a "new" console due to the high price).

I can see Wii's price drop having a similar impact on those type of people - especially given it's software library also supporting that kind of demographic (i.e. lot of family-friendly stuff).

I mean, I just have to think most people willing to buy a PS3 at launch (at least, before the $599 price tag) probably already owned a PS2. Otherwise, if they'd waited this long for a PS2, why not wait for a PS3 price drop? :)

For comparison, in 2005, PS2 was at 90 million consoles worldwide. I believe the last press release from Nintendo said Wii was at 88 million. So in another 5 years, it has to top the 150 mil set by PS2 today.

Personally, I'm placing my bets on the DS.

I'm putting the finishing touches on the extra content for CSTW. Then a bit of testing on the total product and it'll be done. BoDVII hasn't been converted to PC yet, but since CSTW uses the same engine, I'm just going to dump the BoDVII assets into that and tweak it a little until it works right. Shouldn't take more than a few days.

As for the Steam processing, never having done it before, I can't say how long it will take. Plus, I'm not sure how much of that information is confidential so I don't want to give details that might get us in trouble.

    Software LTDs:

Kinect Sports - 3+ Million Worldwide
Dance Central - 2.5+ Million Worldwide

    Hardware:

    Xbox 360 - 297K (+60%) - Top Selling Console
    PlayStation 3 - ~204.3K (+13%)
    Overall

"New physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories showed notable growth in April versus last year. A 17% increase in unit sales translated into over 20% dollar growth due to higher average retail prices.

“Sales occurring in April resulted in 2% year-to-date dollar growth for new physical sales, reversing the negative trend up until March. All three categories experienced double-digit dollar growth compared to April 2010.

"Easter purchasing occurred in April this year as opposed to March last year. The Easter timing shift could explain about $60 million of the growth, but even accounting for that shift, sales of new physical product realized a notable increase versus last year."

    Hardware

"Hardware sales realized the least growth at the category level. Unit sales were up 3%, with the greater dollar sales growth being driven by an increase in average retail price."

"The PS3, PSP and Xbox 360 platforms saw an increase in unit sales versus April 2010. The Xbox 360 platform was the best selling of the month in terms of unit sales, followed by the Nintendo DS."

"April marks the third consecutive month of year-over-year increase in dollar sales for the hardware category."

    Software

"April 2011 represents the first month that new physical retail sales of content showed growth in both units and dollars since November of last year."

"The Xbox 360 platform generated the greatest unit sales of new physical content at over 3.5 million units for the month, followed by the Nintendo DS platform. The Nintendo DS, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms all generated greater unit sales of content versus April 2010."

"The best-selling game of the month is Mortal Kombat 2011, which sold just under 900K units in its first month at retail."

"Portal 2 was the second best selling game in April. According to our PC digital download report, the original Portal was the fifth most downloaded game in 2010, and was available for free when Steam launched on Mac. Portal's performance on the PC, coupled with the success of the Orange Box on consoles undoubtedly helped prime the fan base for Portal 2."

"The content slate was stronger this year versus last April. Five games sold more than 250K units in April 2011 as opposed to just two last April."

"Games that would appear in the top ten ranking on a SKU basis for April include "NDS POKEMON BLACK VERSION," and "PS3 SOCOM 4: U.S. NAVY SEALS." If sales of the SOCOM Move accessory bundle were combined with software sales, this game would have ranked in the top ten titles as well."

    Accessories

"On a year-to-date basis, video games accessories realized the greatest year-over-year percentage increase of all categories. The best-selling accessory item in April was the Xbox 360 Live 1600 Points Game Card."

"Sony's SOCOM 4: Full Deployment Bundle, which included the Sharpshooter as well as the Move, was the top new accessory release."
    Microsoft:
Xbox 360 continues to carry the momentum in U.S. sales as NPD's data now shows that Microsoft's console was once again the top selling console for the month of April, with a total of 297,000 units sold - representing growth of 60% year-over-year. Microsoft pointed out that it's also "been the top selling console in the United States for 10 out of the last 11 months and is the best selling console in 2011."

The Kinect camera also continues to do well for Microsoft. The company said that "consumer demand for Kinect and Kinect games continue to spur console momentum." Kinect Sports sales have now surpassed 3 million units worldwide and Harmonix's Kinect-exclusive Dance Central sales has sold over 2.5 million units worldwide.

All told, Microsoft said it expects the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year. It's pretty clear that Kinect and new Kinect games will be a major focus at E3 for Microsoft.
    Sony:
PS3 has been seeing "double digit growth," Sony says. Patrick Seybold, spokesman for SCEA, issued the following statement in reaction to today's NPD data report.

"NPD reported that the PlayStation 3 continues to see double-digit hardware growth. PS3 hardware sales are up nearly 13% and our PS3 software sales showed a 40% increase year-over-year. We continue to see a lot of great momentum at the retail level, and appreciate the support we've received from our partners, retailers and customers since the criminal attack on the PlayStation Network. We hope to have services restored as soon as we can."

Poor 3DS. Though I'm sure it will find it's way in the world eventually.

As for the Wii surpassing the PS2? No way. Nintendo always seems to drop their previous console when a new one comes out. Even the SNES was instantly replaced by the N64.

So do you guys still need to finish the PC version, or is that done and you're just waiting for it to get processed through Steam?

I'm putting the finishing touches on the extra content for CSTW. Then a bit of testing on the total product and it'll be done. BoDVII hasn't been converted to PC yet, but since CSTW uses the same engine, I'm just going to dump the BoDVII assets into that and tweak it a little until it works right. Shouldn't take more than a few days.

As for the Steam processing, never having done it before, I can't say how long it will take. Plus, I'm not sure how much of that information is confidential so I don't want to give details that might get us in trouble.

Now you can use "Upgraded to a new engine!" as a bullet point for BoD PC :P

White has consistently outsold Black hasn't it? Wouldn't surprise me if the explanation was simply that the Black version didn't make the top ten. The differences between the two are enough to define them as separate games, not simply different SKUs.

You think there's more difference between Pokemon Black and Pokemon White than there is between the 360 and DS versions of CoD:BlOps?

I know there are different cities and stuff... it's supposedly a much bigger difference than the one between other games in the series.

I also don't play Pokemon, and what I know comes from what little I've talked to my wife about it.

Making Project Café versions of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games won't be a stretch, according to comments from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

Speaking at an investor call today, Guillemot revealed that his teams will be able to utilise a lot of the work done on titles for the current HD consoles when developing for Nintendo's new platform.

"The platform Nintendo is coming with is really a fantastic platform. We think it will be extremely successful," he stated.

"What we see is that we will be able to leverage a lot of the work we do for Xbox 360 and PS3 while we create games for the platform.

"So we will not have to redo completely the games that we create. We'll be able to use all the capacity the console is giving but also use all the work we do for the other platforms."

Nintendo hasn't officially released tech specs for its new console yet but speculation suggests it'll boast slightly more oomph than Microsoft and Sony's current systems. A full reveal is expected during its E3 presentation next month.
So continue to expect the same crap from Ubisoft.

there are 2 cites that are different with each version, one is just cosmetic, and the other is black city and white forest, but it petty meta as in you won't be able to go there without beating the game first.
