I recently purchased a DS lite online, (which has yet to arrive), and am intending on purchasing Phoenix Wright and EBA. What other games would you recommend for future purchases?

I have been going around coworkers and friends for 2 weeks and recommending both of the Castlevania exclusives. If you like 2-D side-scrollin' awesomeness with a little kick of RPG, you'll love the hell out of these games. I know I am.
If you have friends, get Mario Kart. If you don't have friends, get the New Super Mario Bros., Yoshi's Island DS, and Pheonix Wright. If you've never had a GBA, get Zelda: The Minish Cap first. Also, I completely agree with the recommendations for AW:DS and the Castlevanias.

Was Rayman DS any good, or did it end up sucking? I mean, it's a remake of Rayman 2, which was easily the best in the series, but I worry that it suffered the same control problems that hit SM64DS.

Feel The Magic / Rub Rabbits.
Short but sweet.
I still can't beat Rub Rabbits, though. Stupid stampede.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime is short, but it's terrific.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is fun.
can you describe Rocket Slime to me? I've almost bought it on 5 or 6 seperate occasions but never pulled the trigger because I don't really know what it is.

I haven't played it, but eToychest (Jason specifically) loved it.
I keep almost buying it, too. I'm sure I'll like it, my only problem is that there are so many good DS games, and I've only got so much money to put toward buying them all. Great problem to have, though.

yeah same here, especially now that mine was (I think) stolen. I have to fork out cash for a new system, plus I have to replace at least New Super Mario Bros. so that's less money I haev to put towards new games, and really I think my next one ought to be PoR cause... honestly I've never played a metroid or metroidvania game and I need to know if I like them or not. I don't think I do but I need to be 100%.

Mario Kart DS is what I've played most in my time with the system.

I've heard it described as a light, fun, fairly easy Zelda-inspired adventure. I haven't played it myself, but I've heard lots of good things about it. Plus, how can you not love this guy?
The trick to enjoying the DS the most, IMO, is to have a blend of games that primarily use the buttons with games that solely use the touchscreen. At this stage in the system's life, though, you could almost throw darts at a game list and come out with stellar titles.

This is pretty accurate, and the game has humor that can be likened to the Mario + Luigi games. One of the bosses you fight is a giant tree called Chrono Twigger, that was enough to convinve me to buy it.

what is combat like? like zelda, or do you mean it's like zelda in that it has puzzles like zelda?
sorry, I don't know where to get good first hand accounts like this. I remember reading the review and feeling like there was some info on the game I didn't have, which I guess would be "is this a regular DQ game or something ENTIRELY different"

I really dug the tank battles. One of the more interesting mechanics I've seen in a game for a long time, though farming for better ammo did get old after a while.
I'm gonna have to give a thumbs down on Yoshi's Island DS. The latter stages are extremely cheap and took me hours of frustrating play to finish because it involves a lot of pattern memorization. I can appreciate a challenge, but not when the challenge involves being ready for things that aren't even on screen yet.

Combat is little more than using a charge attack to knock enemies around and catch them on your head. At that point you can either capture them, or drop them and charge attack them again.. eventually this kills them.
The main goal is to collect everything in sight, the intent being to equip your tank to make the tank fights easier.
Tank fights are basically two huge tanks that lob ammo at each other. Your ammo is stuff you've collected in the game world. Each tank has a crew, which is populated either by enemies you've captured or NPC's you've rescued.
There's little ammo chutes inside your tank, and the battle is fought by picking up the ammo and inserting it into the cannons.. which fires it at the enemy. Goal of the fight is to break the enemy tank open, infiltrate the tank, and destroy their engine core.
your main method of attack is stretching yourself and shooting into other enemies, but you can get items (one item lets you use a sword for example)
tank battles are a different story, and awesome. you control the slime in a giant robot tank and man the cannons in your tank, also you can go into the enemies tank and sabotage it from the inside
I'm looking for a game for the DS that I can play online with fellow PAers. Mario Kart really isn't my deal, but i'm game for whatever else. Have at it, gentlemen.

Metroid Prime Hunters?
Although most here have stopped playing it online because of the rampant cheating in random matches. Still, I know I for one would be up for a Game On!

It's important to note that you can fire yourself from the cannons.
I also have lost magic, but i cannot get past the damn earth wizard with his goddamn stonewall defense. What else is there available online?
Tetris DS, which is probably my favorite to play online. The random community is also nice; the majority of people won't disconnect if they're losing, and I've had several 7- or 9-game grudge matches.

More amusingly, you can shoot your friends from the cannons too. Meteor incoming, no ammo handy? Toss a friend at it to block the shot.

The controls are worse. SM64DS lets you use any point on the touchscreen as the centre of your analog control. Rayman DS uses a fixed point, which is even worse. It's also a port of the cut-down versions of the game and thus has missing levels.
Hotel Dusk.
New Mario.
Either Castlevania, though PoR has a little more variety.
The new Kirby makes for a good rental, because it's classic Kirby (I don't mean Canvas Curse -- I haven't played that one), but it's terribly short.
If you like Tetris, well... you already know about it, and don't need a recommendation.
Animal Crossing is... I don't even know what it is. It's special, but I can't say it's fun for me. Sims-esqe, but more item collection.
Rocket Slime is quite fun, though it was also a rental for me, not a buy.
Also, in case you missed it at the top, Phoenix Wright 1&2.

What sort of cheating is there? I stopped playing online because I was one star and I was sick of being matched up with four and five star people despite checking "match my rank".
I tried to start a game on a while back and it died with one reply, but I'd be up for another one.

I wouldn't really call it "cheating," but there were plenty of alt-spammers and general dickholery. One random match I played, the opponent as Samus spent the entire match just rolling around in ball form. She killed me once, and then she hid for the rest of the match to earn the win.
It's a blast with people you know, though. I should revive the Wi-fi thread for a Game On some day.

To the OP: Which Phoenix Wright are you picking up? I'd suggest the original Ace Attorney first. And EBA looks like pure fun (I'm a huge Ouendan devoteé). I'd also strongly suggest Trauma Center (unless you're jonesing for the Wii version), with maybe a dash of Dawn of Sorrow or Mega Man ZX.
