3 more hours of this game last night, man it's just blissful.

I'll repeat: in-car, no-hud, no assists except ABS is the way to play this game. Scale the AI difficulty to whatever makes your average race place you mid-pack.

So, um. This may be a weird question, but how does one "drift" in an automobile? I just got to some kind of drift challenge, and according to my best score it's just about driving around like a complete idiot crashing into things.

use your handbrake instead of just the normal break to slide your back out, as soon as it starts sliding counter steer a bit and accelerate to keep the drift going

I like turning off ABS for the added challenge. You have to brake much earlier and get out of the mind set that braking and turning at the same time is something that works. Much like in real life on cars with no ABS, driving like that can cause you to wrap your car around a tree. D:

I think Dirt 3 has the most realistic representation of a car without ABS. In a lot of sims no ABS usually means you can't even drive the car in a straight line without it spinning out and you are essentially gimping yourself.

You can also not use your handbrake depending on what you're trying to do and the surface you're on. Hard steering and sharply letting off the gas or with regular hard breaking can induce some pretty heavy oversteer too. The first drift challenge is on loose gravel, if I remember right, so you won't really need the handbrake that much.

Thanks. I guess I need to figure out where the handbrake is on my wheel. 8-)

...Like say... Forza 2? Touch the brakes and sideways you go. Glad Turn 10 made that better for 3.

Aids off in this seems very manageable. But whatever people need to maximize their enjoyment of the game, more power to 'em. Except the racing line. That has no place in this game. That's what the pace notes are for. No line or map for Trailblazer events adds to the intensity.

Did Dirt 1 and 2 have racing lines? I don't even remember.

I know 2 didn't have one. It didn't really need one at the "rookie" stages of the game anyway, though, since it was so forgiving.

this is the first time racing lines have been in a colin mcrae game and I immediately turned them off. they are great in a game like forza but nononononnono for a rally game

Yeah, that's what I thought, I couldn't think of an off road game with them in before.

Just seems like a racing line doesn't fit in a rally game. I mean, I know there's an ideal line for the fastest time, sure, but with all the loose surfaces and mud and jumps and sliding through corners and such, it's pretty shades of gray, don't you think?

ya, it's freaking weird, especially with how the cornering works in rally games, you can't expected to be on their magical best line at all. I'm cutting corners and drifting through, and bouncing around, and doing all kind of crap. i'm sure a racing line would be scared of my car.

    That's great!

Really not far in the game at all, I keep trying out the SP races to check out cars and tracks. But I did just win the WRC Citroen. Awesome. Now to just get that Abu Dhabi livery for the Ford...

Is anyone else on the PC experiencing frequent crashes during loading? I had the exact same thing with DiRT2 and could never figure out why and it's getting pretty annoying.

Edit: Oh hey, apparently it's a DX11 problem. Wonderful.

This game is so awesome. After playing Shift 2, with all the default assists on Dirt 3 felt so incredibly easy. After turning them all off except ABS (which I'll try turning off tonight) it felt much more satisfying. The game really does a great job of letting you tailor the challenge to suit your skills.

Gymkahna is actually way more fun than I imagined it being. Now to figure out how to stop drifiting into walls like a total moron...

By the way, the party mode gametypes in this are awesome. The only real issue I have is that it's hard to see which team you are on, once you are in game.

It's a very pretty game. I don't know how it looks on the consoles, but given how amazingly well it runs with everything turned up and how good it looks with things not all the way up, I can't imagine it looks terribly worse.

Has anyone managed to get a platinum medal in the gymhkana donut tutorial?

It's just downright mean. 11 perfect donuts in a row without missing anything? Fuck that nonsense. It's the only platinum I don't have in that entire season. :(

Only played the first 3 events, loving it so far, the driving model is much less forgiving than in Dirt 2, however the sense of speed seems to have been reduced.

Game runs and looks better than Dirt 2, I'm currently rocking ultra settings with 4x antialiasing, and I have 45fps average.

But I've got 2 problems right now:

    1. In-game volume is quite low, anyone else experience this? Might be because I'm using a Soundblaster ZS2 soundcard.

    2. Screenshots with Fraps come out completely wrong, it's rainbow colors and LSD.

I submit that it is not possible without hax. I can get going into a donut almost instantly, but the increments at which they give you the points for a donut is too long to be able to get 11 of them in the time allotted for the event. Not possible, goddammit. :x

So, which version do people think would be best? PC (Dual Core 2.8ghz, 4gb ram, ATI 5750 (512mb)) or PS3? I can use my wheel on either.

:quick edit: Both are hooked up to the same entertainment system too (my lovely, sexy, 50" 3DTV)

They should have just went the whole way with that guy, completely over the top since he's obnoxious as all get out already.

He could say Brosef, or Brohan, or Off the Chizzain, or talk about energy drinks to the EXTREEEME!

It reminds me of Poochie in The Simpsons, just comes down to trying too hard.

So, anyone get the avatar racing suit on xbox after completing season 1? I haven't yet. I've gotten first on everything, all the trinagles are gold, I didn't get platnums on every gymkhana event though. I wonder if you have to in order to get it. 'Cause that probably won't happen for me.

Was using the racing line for the first few races to get my bearings, just took it off and my times have gone up by like 5 seconds on Trailblazers.

Only using ABS now and taking double and triple hairpins like a boss rather than taking the boring line.

I feel like they vastly improved rally cross and raid here. After a while I just avoided them completely in Dirt 2 in favour of rally and trailblazer, but I really like them in this game. Not sure what it is, maybe just the tracks being a little wider and better designed.

Also I love that personal best plink noise.

I completely agree. I left all of those for last in Dirt 2, there were so many, they just dragged on too.
But in this, I'm really enjoying them. I think it's the locations for me.
