Rallisport Challenge 2 is still my favorite rally racer. Instead of making a single point to point track, they made a massive area with a bunch of tracks that cross over each other. Once race you might go down a straight path, then have a left u-turn, the next race you go down the same straight path, but this time you have a right turn. They managed to make 90 different tracks out of those areas... add in different time of day/weather conditions and the game felt massive.
Here is a poorly photoshopped picture of a track. The white is the current track, the red is paths that are used on other variations.
If youse guys haven't seen this yesterday, check it out.
OXM Preview of the Monte Carlo DLC, out June 28th.
"The Monte Carlo stages have been designed with real rally fans in mind," explained Senior Game Designer Paul Coleman. "We knew that by making the Monte Carlo stages additional content we could really do it justice by increasing the difficulty. We made the narrow mountain roads tight and twisty to really enhance the feeling of danger."
Having played it, we can certainly vouch for the exquisite terror of lobbing a snorting rally car around corners that feature a sheer drop at one side and a (literally) rock-solid cliff face on the other. And while these are tarmac stages, there's a liberal dusting of snow and ice, making it eminently easy to bin your car against any of the numerous solid obstacles littering the course.
As if that wasn't enough, the DLC pack includes a new Foggy weather option, to provide added danger for DiRT 3's more talented rally nutters. "With the introduction of the Foggy weather condition the rally cars - from the iconic Mini Cooper to the legendary Audi Quattro - become a real challenge to wrestle through these narrow stages," Coleman explained.
These stages are the most authentic you'll find in the game, based closely on the routes between Alpine villages that make up the Monte. "The technical mountain roads and slushy ice surfaces are the closest DiRT 3 stages to their real life counterparts," confirms Coleman. Followers of the sport will instantly recognise stage names that have featured in the event for years.
It's going to depend on how much you like the cars. For $6 I thought it was a steal personally because I like what was offered. You can buy the cars separately but unless you only want one car from the pack, I don't think its worth it. Two would be $4, so you might as well spend the extra $2 and get 5 cars. Just 3 cars would be the exact same price as the whole pack.
I wanted to love Dirt 3, but the whole "lol your games won't save while you're offline" crap has me pretty god damn salty.
wat?
When the PSN was down I had no problems saving my game at all. Maybe its something I'm missing.
Also, Kyleh, you and I need to do some rally events some time. The Autolog-like features pitting our Time Trial times against each other and I think we could have some close races.
Dissolution, yep we should do that. I need to play more Dirt 3, ive just been busy lately.
Likewise, I'm probably going to log in right now and just hoon around a bit at Battersea. Haven't played in a bit, and I have a feeling my skills have have gone rusty already.
I won't be online i'm afraid. Watching the 24 hours of Nurburgring and then the Pikes Peak Hill Climb race is in a little bit. Been watching racing all weekend! I'll try to be online tonight.

I'm guessing the PC version uses Games For Windows Live, like Dirt 2 did. If you're not online, you have no saves. It's awesome.*
I have this weird problem right now where everytime I try to log on to GFWL, my internet connection fritzes. So I can start Virtua Tennis 4, but I can't continue my saved dude because I'm not online.
Yeah, Games for Windows Live is garbage. You can however create an offline account that will allow saving, but I don't remember how to do this. The whole process is confusing and GFWL hides how to do it.
Yup, you have open GFWL GUI, and click somewhere like "Why do I have to be online?" or such, it will give you an explanation, and in that explanation there's a hyperlink that says "Create offline account".

This actally has me really bummed out, not that you're not online, but that SpeedTV didn't cover the 24hours of Nurburgring at all. And be it that I don't currently own my OWN computer I couldn't watch a stream anywhere like I wanted. Though, I did get a chance to catch the Grand Am Road America 2 hour race yesterday, where this happened. Guess the throttle stuck.
I think i'm gonna save myself $10 and skip the Monte Carlo pack. It doesn't sound like its that good and fell into the trap of reusing sections of each stage. The next pack is a car pack and i'll get that one. The only way I would change my mind is if you guys just absolutely love it, a lot of my decisions are based on Jamesways opinion.
I'm totally caving after work since I'm a sucker for racing DLC. I do love the few Rally stages in this, so more is always welcome. There are a few stages on each location that don't re-use sections, so I'm hoping this has two that are like that, completely different.
I'm trying to finish up winning all the events, and find myself hating the gymkhana more and more. The timed ones can die a frickin' fire.
My racing buddy got it this morning, and he absolutley loves it, so we'll see.
It's some of the best looking and best designed rally stages in the game IMO. It's tight, quite technical, and can be a very fickle, unforgiving mistress, especially at night. 8 stages, but like the others- with plenty of overlap, and some reversed. It's integrated in the Dirt Tour, but not available in the Pro Tour online, just in the jam session.
There's no rain option, but morning sun, night, and fog. Fog doesn't hinder your view as much as you'd think it would, but it's still a cool hazy gray day effect.
Worth the cash? I don't know, 10 bucks is a lot for one environment. It'll come down to personal opinion probably. But it is one of the best Rally environments they've done, hands down. I love Finland and Michigan, and this is now right up there with those two for me. Let's put it this way, I feel better about the game now that this is in it. More rally available to play, spendy, but now I have more options for jumping in quick races.
Like I said, personal preference. I might skip the next DLCs. I like the WRC cars the best and the Rally tracks, not sure about Shibuya Rallycross back in, and not sure the Stratos will be worth the cash.
But I'll probably get them anyway...
Kyleh, check the official forum for some reviews, there's lots of talk about this pack there. In general, people really like it, but are grumbling about the price. It sure does look and play great though. There's quite a few people posting youtube clips on the forums too if you want to see how it looks.
And there's also a Mini Gymkhana DLC car up for 2 bucks, but screw that.
Edit- Yep, really glad I bought it. The full tracks are a bit longer too- a 3:45-4:00 range. I like the reverse tracks too, they feel different going the other way.
Still worth it, but I can't get my head around what CM boasted about, and what we got. This type of thing is in every rally stage. Now they've said that because of the engine, they can't have 4-8 completely different stages per environment (or they probably didn't have time). Still kind of a bummer, considering the diversity that was in Dirt 1.
I never played Dirt 1, but I do remember how diverse and great the stages in CMR04 were. The Spain stage had like 3 types of asphalt and 3 other types of concrete? I loved that.
I really liked Dirt 1, but the physics leaned very heavily towards arcade. I mean, it was possible to get up the pikes peak in under 7 minutes in a Group B rally car.

That's the huge drawback. It's really hard to go back to that handling. I've said it before, but if only Dirt one had the handling and graphics of 3, or 3 had the stages of 1... so much better.

Wait, are some of those identical? What is the difference between the last 2?
I'd love to get a wheel, but I can't figure out how to comfortably shoehorn the pedals in with my flight stick rudders underneath my desk and the other half of my desk is where my Steel Batallion controller lives.
Actually hell, pictures, thousand words, etc. Take a look at my desk clutter dilemma:
(my consoles are no longer upright like that. I found some nifty shelves to stack them on)
SO MANY PEDALS

In conclusion, companies should stop using GFWL.
* Warning: Not really awesome.

Oh well, the game just would have crashed some more anyway.
Talk about overlap.

Logitech wheels are solid. I still have my driving force pro that I bought years ago for my PC.
+1 to that. One of my favorite rally games of all time; in fact that game and the one right before it in the series were my introduction to rally.
And that wasn't even a long stage. If I remember, there are some that can go 15-20 minutes.
I still have it on my PC. Should fire it up.
I actually used this wheel for a while in GT5 and its the reason why I'm probably ordering one of the more expensive wheels next paycheck.
Thinking...

As much as I like my DFP, if I win my rFactor league I'm totally going to get one of those.
I've only found a couple that I really enjoy to drive. I like that Colin Mcrea car in the Open category.
Also, the renault in the 60's group is awesome to drive. So fun!
Of course, I've probably only tried like half of em. Which do you guys like?
