klokateer9047 has been added to the Xbox 360 tournament. LockedOnTarget and Theodore Floosevelt (via PM) added to the PS3 tournament. This brings Xbox 360 kontenders up to 9, and the PS3 kontenders up to 3/4 depending on JAEF. I'll keep your potential bowing out in mind when constructing the PS3 bracket. Wish I could offer you some shelter, a PS3 and a copy of MK while on your travels but I'm ill-equipped here.
I want in on the PS3 tourney, in case you missed me. My stuff is in my sig and in the OP list.
Looks like I'll be using Smoke as my main, and I want to try to get some more time in with Ermac this week. I had been pimping Scorpion with 9 and 10 hit combos on expert and whatnot, but online he was just garbage. Not sure if it was due to the odd lag or if everyone has secretly been working on anti-Scorpion strategies for the past month, but I've decided to retire him for now.
Too bad, Scorp was the only one whom I memorized all the fatalities for.

I'm going to put the idea out there that we should establish the brackets and then let the opponents contact one another. My free evenings are a bit sporadic over the next three weeks, and while I do want to participate in the tournament, I'd be bummed if it were on a night I was unavailable.

What time were you thinking for the PSN tourney? I might be down if I can make it. PSN is Leevity, also if there is a psn user list, could you add me to it?
Started to play again over the weekend and I started to use Sub Zero, he fits my play style pretty well. Just chill (heh heh) out and get a short combo in and back away.
I'd be down for the Tourny on PS3, but 2 things. 1. I'm really goddamn terrible. 2. I can only play afternoons, super late nights, or weekends. Hopefully I can find an opponent that can beat me easily within that timeframe. But put me down for interested. CorriganX on PSN.

CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Id play in a tourney (360) but I work swings (3pm-midnight PST). I could have to forfeit due to not being able to schedule a match time (most likely my fault)
And I wouldnt want to be holding up the tourney for my match

Woah, good morning MK thread. Time to get these names down and so forth.
Added everyone who's posted since my last one to the tournament list. I'll boot up the software and work you guys into it after my morning coffee.
Re Ceno:
That's the plan. Samurai6966 tried that with the previous tournament, but it still fell on its arse. So, what's going to happen is:
The first bracket matches will be posted on Friday 20th May. Matches will be playable from Monday 23rd May. This is so you can spend some of the weekend practising, or spend it away from the game if you want, as well as contact your opponent via PM or XBL/PSN I.D. to arrange your match. Once your match is arranged, PM me. I'm cleaning out my inbox today so I'm ready for the influx.
You have until Monday 30th May at the absolute god damn latest to get your first match out of the way. Anything later and the tournament will march on without you. unless you contact me via PM in advance so I can work around it. It's dickish to everyone involved to not be a no-show and not tell anyone. I'll try my best to work the opening brackets around the days and times that people have requested to make things easier, but it's not going to be something that can be workable throughout the entire tournament - we've got people who all play at different times, and in different time zones.
In the event of a match not taking place and neither kombatant combats me, both will be disqualified from the tournament. In the event of a match not taking place but one of the kombatants sent me a PM saying words to the effect of "Oh I tried to get in touch with so-and-so but they never responded" or "We had a time and date set and I was there but my opponent wasn't" I'll have no choice but to disqualify the no-show and give the person who put in the effort to contact me a bye.
Once you've had your match, PM me with the result. Got a capture card or something to record the match with? Fantastic, feel free to post the match so we can see these things. If things go smoothly then we will probably get the next round of matches under way earlier.
Also, this is a Double Elimination Tournament. This means that just because you had the misfortune to not win your first match, all will not be lost. You will have a second chance.
-mutters at the majority of you being in America and goes back to beating up Scottish people-
Dunxco - I know it's a pain but any chance you could get region info for PS3 usernames (or just highlight those outside of the USA, we'll be in the minority)? I'm getting people adding me but I can't actually play against them online, similarly I don't want to go through and add someone, challenge them to a match and have the PS3 just boot them out of their game.

I can do that right now for you. Won't be getting all of them, but I'll get as many as I can.
Edit: *ahem* Oi.
If like Mr Grinch you happen to be on the PS3 and in a region outside of the US, please speak the hell up so I can put that in to the OP for the exact reason Mr Grinch posted.
Oh and Barrabas?
According to some leaked patch stuff over on SRK.com forums (so take that with a large dab of salt), Baraka will be getting a new juggle chain and a damage buff. Maybe he won't be terrible and then you'll have to stop playing him. :P
How do you defend against a king lau that keeps attacking with quick combo's and jumpin over you.. it seems like the combo's are all safe on block so i have no opening to turn the tides

Boom, flawless victory online. With Noob Saibot. Go me.

He's really, really good. You have to take advantage if exert opening you get. He can counter almost anything and has really good offensive options. Many Kung lau players have obvious patterns.
I feel against. Really good Kung Lao player, unless you're a couple characters who are also god tier, gg.
I'm really suprised the PS3 version is region locked when the 360 version isn't.
I mean, why?
Most likely has to do with psn slowly coming up. The 360 version is also "region locked" when it comes to quick search I believe

Yeah I'm willing to bet you'll be able to challenge people across the globe before too long. It's just waiting for the lumbering beast to wake up fully.
I guess I'll mention again that the implementation of private match invites (does not recognize out-of-region discs as the same game) leads me to believe that the regional separation is intentional and permanent on PS3, not some sort of "wait-for-the-PSN-to-stabilize" temporary separation.
So what's actually good to do with Kung Lao? I've messed around in practice and got myself a nice combo which involves teleport, punch to launch them, then a couple of low jabs, followed by the spinny move, followed by a flying kick and then the down kick. Does about 25/26% so not devastating but I can at least pull it off.
What are good tactics? I love his spinning hat EX move (the ground one where it embeds in the ground and stays there whilst you hold Triangle) but I've yet to really use it for anything. His ex-spinny move seems to suck them in a bit more but nothing else.

Yeah, each disc has an id so they're treated as separate games. So the id for MK9 - NTSC may be 0001, whereas MK9 - PAL is 0002. When you accept an invite on the PSN it checks what disc you have in, if it's not the correct one then it asks you to insert it.
So jaef invites me, my PS3 checks disc, realises it's not 0001 and puts up the prompt "Please insert Mortal Kombat disc" and won't get any further. As Jaef says, I think it's the way private matches have been implemented, not a limitation of the PSN.
I fought a kung lao that constantly did safe combo's, and jumped to my otherside and kept doing it over and over...
Even my pokes came out too slow to stop him.....
When i got away he spammed low hats until he could start the process again

Funnily enough I just went against a Kung Lao with 4xx/1xx win/loss ratio and won most of the time as Sektor. He should've spun more. His normals are really, really fast and he kept using this one string that was absolutely safe on block. Then again Sektor is a slowpoke so your mileage may vary. As far as I know, Kung Lao doesn't really have an overhead kombo (or does he? The guy never used it in the match and I don't play Kung Lao) but that teleport looks like it has an overhead as one of the options. He's pure rushdown though, and I've heard from people like Tom Brady talking about how Kung Lao has a lot of risk/reward and the spin is punishable (DASH IN ON REGULAR, NO NEED TO DASH IN ON EX HAT BECAUSE OF THE VACUUM!)

Sorry to double-post, but Episode 6 of MK Legacy is up, featuring Raiden.

I don't pick characters that are terrible on purpose (well except for Dan) they just happen to end up that way half the time. I'll still play him if he winds up good in a later rendition of the game.
It would be hilarious if they just made his spin move work the same as Kung Lao's.

That was an X-Files Raiden, to be sure. Dude looked pretty good with a beard, too. They might want to consider that whenever they redesign him again.
Does every mental hospital operate under the pretense of passively abducting anyone they find on their grounds and have a smug, merciless sociopath running the facilities?
What the hell LCD you have this for PS3 and not 360?
I know, I know. It was an impulsive maneuver led on by my desire to A) play with a decent D-pad and keep it out of "my son's" Xbox.
You see, he has somewhat commandeered the 360. We have confirmed with extensive genetic testing that he is, in fact, spoiled at the DNA-level, but we have maintained thus far that the PS3 is "daddy's and only daddy's" toy. And seeing as that I'm not too keen on the idea of letting him play something like MK, it felt like a good idea. At the time.
I still love you. I'm sure the bugger is like 6 now, right?
I need to play some more MK. There's so much content and I've barely done any of it, just played some KOTH matches.

I am not too familiar with srk. Unreliable? People in the thread are claiming that some of the changes are already live. Namely smoke's otg projectile, and some others.
Also dunxco, I'm game for the tournament 360. I'll pm you as well.
Am I stupid? I don't see a list of tournament people in the OP.
Also, what's the consensus on a stick for this game? Makes you better, meh, or what?
meh. MK works fine on a pad as long as it has a good d-pad. I use a stick just because it's what I'm used to. The only thing that's probably easier to do on a stick instead of a pad is kanoball.

How do you guys counter guys spamming a leg sweep over and over when you are down on the ground. If I get hit and don't recover a lot of time guys will run right up to me and just spam a leg sweep. I can't seem to get up or do anything....:x

Sweeps, they are blockable. Literally just that. If I see a guy come in looking for a sweep, I duck and block. If I get knocked down and the guy comes in looking to sweep... I duck and block.
Low block is relatively safe in this game. Sure there are overheads but, at least for now, you are not seeing a whole lot of overhead shenanigans. That will change in time though. You do see a lot of high>low mixups though, which, if blocking low is not an issue.

How do some of these players with abominable playskills get such a high win/loss record? Just wiped the floor with a 300/100 Scorpion as Sektor, twice in a row. He had some kombos, but not really anything impossible to get around. I think he gave up after the second 45% hit kombo.
I don't know how you're pulling off these 45% hit combos online unless it's an x-factor combo. I can't seem to get any combos that involve dashing down consistently online.

Against anyone, stand and block. I noticed that duck-blocking teleport attacks just leads to them whiffing and recovering faster, while standing a blocking puts them in the Sonic the Hedgehog. Yay free kombo!
Barrabas - practice, mostly. If the lag is bad I can cut it short to a respectable 35%, but most matches today have been pretty good.
I was having tons of execution issues when the PSN came back up. I could not for the life of me get Cyrax's command grab to work and it was really messing me up for a while. I eventually just switched over to Reptile and was having more luck. Still dropping combos like mad though. I got too used to lag free in practice mode and against friends and am having trouble adjusting. Also, I am terrible.
