Don't see this on the UK steam store. I checked earlier in the week and there was a pre order listing. I remember it was 34.99 pounds, but 29.99 if you pre ordered. Now there's no listing at all. Just some trailers. It's only 3 hours into the launch here. So maybe it'll pop up soon.
I finally crack and decide to buy it and it's nowhere to be found.
Australian steam has some strange deal (Brink + strategy guide for $60, Brink without strategy guide $90), so maybe the UK store is working on something similar?

Lots of people keep posting about challenges being too hard, so here:
If you are having trouble beating a certain challenge, make a level one character and then complete it. Bots level up with you, so doing it on your level 15 is going to be a lot more difficult. Weapon/clothing unlocks are shared between characters.
So the 360 online lack of lobbies sucks...as for the performance, it seemed to be the host. I dropped from a slideshow game and into a new one, ran great.
Absolutely hideous fucking lag in every goddamn fucking match. Completely unplayable in multiplayer. Which is kind of a problem given the friendly AI is so incompetent. It doesn't make any damn sense either because the opponent AI is decent. It's really too bad, there is a good game here, but the bitch is locked in a cast-iron chastity belt of suck.

Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
Man for a game with no sniper rifles, I am seeing a lot of people running around shooting at long ranges with bolt action rifles with a giant scope on them.
As in, the shit that's been around since like Team Fortress 1. Press one key to prime the grenade, press it again to throw it. Having to hold that shit down for 3 seconds is annoying and takes away too many fingers.
I also find it really hard and awkward to iron sight, so I almost never use it. But that's my problem. I've never played a game where I had to do that. It would be easier if I had a thumb button, which is why I need a new mouse. Whatever happened to that skill that would increase hip firing accuracy? These guns don't hit shit, their spreads are all massive even on the first shot.
Grenades need a press to prime option. Unless it's already there and I haven't found it. They're so annoying to use right now.
I need a new mouse.
You have to get the passive ability on a level up. Lets you sprint while holding a grenade then run by and toss it into rooms and stuff and it blows instantly. Its pretty awesome actually.

I've.
I've never really played a game where priming the grenade wasn't to hold the grenade throw/fire button.

also you can like, adjust the bot difficulty from normal to like easy or something in the campaign menu.
So I hit quite a few dudes with a Lazarus grenade earlier tonight, so tell me.
Do you get a choice whether to stand up or is it like Bad Company 2 where you just immediately start reviving. How much health are you coming back with?
Since this game is absolute crap at telling you any useful information, I had to get dirty and test out soldier's "Grenade Mastery" ability myself.
Using a stopwatch I timed frag grenades to have a 20 second cooldown, same for hand and launcher. With the ability it went down to 14 seconds for both.
I had to start a new character and lvl up to 5 (since it's a rank 2 ability) because I didn't want to risk wasting a point on my main guy.

Are you really complaining that pressing and holding the grenade button to prime and throw takes too many fingers, then suggesting that the superior option is to have two separate buttons for the two actions?

What gun are you using where the spread is all over? I can hit pretty accurate even at medium range with my AR and even my SMG sometimes. Usually my setup is an AR and an SMG at all times, though to be honest i rarely get into long range combat situations in this game, im usually up close and personal slide kicking dudes while gunning them in the chest, works well, i kill a lot of dudes. Despite all the wannabe snipers in this game i dont find sniping or long range combat to usually be particularly useful to the team or to the game in general.

Um, can't you "sell" abilities you don't want anymore?
I am having a hard time finding an enjoyable/competitive/non-laggy server tonight, and once again The Cantina is always full.
I have to admit upon further reflection performance on my system leaves something to be desired. The weird first-person run-bob animation that makes it seem like all the characters have a gimpy knee doesn't help the feeling of smoothness if the frames start to hitch at all.
Man for a game with no sniper rifles, I am seeing a lot of people running around shooting at long ranges with bolt action rifles with a giant scope on them.
If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck...
It is true that those guns are kinda shit compared to any other game with a sniper rifle.
I find myself doing it, too, but it takes like 3 headshots to take down a heavy. It's quicker to get up close most of the time.
And when your whole team is just back-to-back, no amount of snipers takes you out.
I used to get the odd hitch in this game when i first got it, but then the day after my new CPU and mobo arrived, and my hitched vanished. I now run no less than 60 fps pretty much all the time other than in the single player campaign where it is locked at 30 (for some reason.) apparently its like that for all IDtech 4 games though?
I actually upgraded my whole system in anticipation for this game an The Witcher 2. So far im not disappointed. Also incredibly happy i got rid of my 4xxx series ATI card for a Nvidia 500 series.
This game is pretty great when it's working. But just about every server we can join is laggy as all hell. Also, the PA Cantina server just locked up hard

Not really, stuff like Doom 3, Quake 4, and Prey aren't locked to 30. It's more of a Splash Damage thing since Quake Wars.

Yeah. Light Rifles are very situational in Brink, and that's exactly as it should be. I switched to one to countersnipe someone on Resort, and it was an awesome little cat-and-mouse, but by no means is it something you're going to carry around all the time.
I find the weapons and mods in Brink to be supremely balanced. Every modification has ups and downs, and every weapon has an ideal usage scenario. It's great. There's none of the 'why would you ever use anything but X' syndrome that plagues so many other shooters.
Just had a great time on the Cantina with everyone. Clutch last-second defense of the mainframe, Hunter. Your nades rule all.
My grenades win games.
They do. With my syringes.
It's mainly my grenades.
And I just leveled up into a good ol' explosion radius increase, so now I have the best grenades upgrades can buy.
I thought you were using the Underslung 203? If so, those grenade upgrades don't work with it. You can get explosions on contact pretty easy with Grenade Shooting though.
I really like playing medic in this game, but I always end up running out of juice and since there's no way to get it back except wait I end up in these weird situations where its just better for me to die since I'm basically dead weight for what I need to do.

Yes, tapping a button twice is less cumbersome than holding one down.

So far, shotgun, pistols, a couple of the long ranged rifles, and recently tried the galactic.
Really, it's that even at their best the spread is huge, almost the size of a quarter on my screen. The single shot rifles have a little dot, but they still have a spread without zooming.
This is just a problem I have. Outside of Rainbow 6 I've not played games with such pronounced spreads. Even Counter-Strike I could expect to hit my target with the first shot while on the move, and there's no iron sights anyway. I guess I'll have to get used to that, but it's really weird right now.
I hit targets while on the move hip firing all the time, i kill at least 65-70% of my kills with hip firing. Maybe its my attachment set up? I also use the bulllpin (sp?) SMG or the Galactic as they seem to be the most accurate.
So that leaves single player. Which I don't mind doing usually... Except the A.I. is terrible!
The friendly A.I. is unhelpful and useless, often letting bad guys RUN PAST THEM when I'm completing an objective. And going after command posts when there's an actual, real objective to get done.
Brink is different only in that what the game calls 'singleplayer' we call 'multiplayer with bots'. If you look at it through singleplayer glasses (think COD, BF, BF:BC, Halo, etc), the bots shouldn't complete the objectives. In other games, all they do is run to their death or pretend like they are helping you. In this game, at least they are focused on actually supporting you (reviving, resupplying, doing the boring objectives like command posts, etc and doing a little killing). And they do that EXTREMELY well. Many times have I run out of ammo to have a bot run up a second later and give me more. They always buff me and always, when nearby, revive me. They do what they should do in singleplayer. If they did more, the game would basically play itself. Who wants that?
The enemy A.I. (on easy mode) is just too good. As a relatively decent FPS player, I shouldn't completely hit a wall on the second level. If I want a comp stomp to let off some steam (or learn the level layouts), that should be possible, RIGHT?!
If you want a comp stomp, just create a new character. The enemy AI is so dumb and worthless when you are lower rank.
You're comparing story-driven shooters to what is essentially a multiplayer-only shooter (I should mention here that as someone who didn't really follow the development of the game, I thought it was kind of funny when I learned that there was no real singleplayer. The devs made such a big deal in their first video of how the singleplayer and multiplayer experiences were well integrated together. Turns out singleplayer is just multiplayer with bots. That's hardly innovative.)
The bots in those other games you mentioned don't do much because they're essentially corridors with cutscenes. If the bots did all the work, you might as well just sit there and consider the game to be a movie. A far better comparison is another multiplayer-only shooter, Unreal tournament 2004 (I never played 3). The bots are competent, even in the objective-oriented assault mode.
Honestly, given the amount of cheap multiplayer-only shooters coming out on services like Xbox live, Brink comes in with bad timing. This could have worked a few years ago, but now if you don't have a rich singleplayer experience, there is an expectation that you will not have to pay the price of a full game.

On the other hand, if you don't have a rich multiplayer experience, is that worth full price as well?
Far be it for me to comment on the worth people subjectively derive from a game, but it strikes me as disingenuous to say you have to have such-and-such otherwise you can't be full priced.
I say this even though, having played the game, I wouldn't have ponied up the full $50. I like the game yes, but it does have some issues.

It's not that I can't hit targets while hip firing, it's that they're still wildly inaccurate (to my standards), and I find that to be annoying.
There's a general feeling of inadequacy I get while using most of the guns. They feel alright for taking down single targets at a decent range, but it feels like the game is purpose-built to make it harder to fight more than 1 or 2 people at a time, which I'm not used to either.
I mean, keep in mind that I haven't played a multiplayer fps since Quake 3 and QuakeLive (and that I played Quake 3 off and on till 2009). Pretty much everything in Brink is totally new to me.
