Does the heavy body type add stability? It seemed like I was able to fire longer burst but I could just be imagining it...
I feel I have to side with security. It is true that the conflict escalates from the lack of information and straight up lies told by each side. That being said the Ark was designed, as I understand it, to be a sustainable habitat for around 5,000 people. The refugees came to the Ark, were allowed on even though the founders had to know the consequences, and the number of inhabitants swelled to 45,000. Obviously, the resources of Ark were never meant to support that many and now require careful rationing. There is certainly a lot of blame to go on the founders and their inability to adapt to changing conditions, but I cannot see the Ark lasting long under the rule of the Resistance.
On a side note what is your favorite map? I enjoy Aquarium but play on live so don't run across a lot of well organized teams

Which is pretty much the way I'm considering things. With the original choice, being able to leave the Ark seemed like the best idea and I initially threw my lot in with the Resistance, but the more I play the more stupid the Resistance seems and the more I prefer Security.

I did the exact same thing as I usually find myself going for the underdog. I then proceed to play through the story, read the audio logs, and shake my head a lot. I don't understand the thought process behind leaving. I mean you did flee to the Ark because the world sucked. Did they expect it would be a jolly rainbow of sunshine and carefree lifestyle out there now?
I tend to sympathize with Security myself. I can understand some of what motivates the Resistance but their actions often seem extreme, not to mention poorly thought-out or downright stupid.

Who is the Ishmael guy that they have quotes from in the loading screens?
I want to say its the narrator lady, its in the manual.
my guess an old founder or something or possible an old survivor of the whole ordeal
Quite possibly the best character in the whole game, being the only one who sees both admiration and futility in the whole Ark project, and where it is now. I didn't buy Brink for the story, but it does have its strong points.
Also, I'm really hoping the console patches drop today - it's getting tiring to play one really good match with minimal lag problems only for the next one to have such a terrible connection that I'm forced to quit out, usually when I'm having a great time.
The audio logs paint the Resistance a dark shade of dumbass.
Let's steal zinc from the water purification system in order to make ammunition, then use the resulting water shortage as an example of our mistreatment!
That's not dumbass. It's certainly evil, but creating scarcity breeds dissension which is what the resistance thrives off of. It's actually quite clever considering their people are probably the ones with the most access to these systems so security can't do much about it and are screwed both ways.
It doesn't do much to paint them as fighters for the people though. Spreading disease and water shortage when you're out in the middle of the ocean is a great way to kill just about everyone.
But really, that's just what I'd expect from desperate terrorists. What really rips the conflict from being grey for me is the leaders for each faction. Mokaena fights for what he believes is the only way of survival for the people of ark. If sacrificing himself would be the greatest good he would. Chen isn't telling the founders of the eventual structural failings because of pride. It's disney villain.
Edit: By the way, why aren't the ones who want to leave allowed to? That was never quite explained was it? Is it slave labour? Not wanting to give away the means? In the audio log the founder paints the guests as moochers, why wouldn't you let moochers leave?
they don't want people leaving for fear of them finding unsavory or other layabouts who might come back to the ark to pillage or stress their already limited resources

What? Defending themselves?? Can someone please find me something which makes me sympathize with the resistance, or hate security?
and the Resistance/Guests do all of the dirty jobs. Imagine a hotel or resort or theme park without anyone to empty the trash, clean, maintain everything, or cook.
I don't know which side to support. The story is sort of silly. And Paul and Ed kept talking about how you shouldn't believe everything you hear in the briefings, and how the different factions tell their soldiers different things about the objectives.
Brother Chen may or may not know about the state of the Ark really crumbling, he could just be paranoid or delusional. If he does know, and it isn't delusional or whatever, and he doesn't tell anyone, that is crazy. If the Founders knew the Ark was crumbling, they would probably organize excursions.

They did. The people they found were pretty much just evil and savage, and they tortured the teams sent out for the location of the ark, so they had to move it, but they don't have the resources to move it again. Which is why they're trying to stop people from leaving.
Yeah, Security and Resistance were supposed to be set up so that it would be hard to clearly define who were the good guys, and who were the bad guys. But its so easy to side with The Security Forces.
They're not even "Raghhhh, Kill em all!!!!" types. I like the dialogue at the beginnins of the Container City raid. None of those guys feel right about raiding this civilian area, some even have family there I believe.

Don't forget that it's clearly shown from both sides that there are opportunities for the Guests to educate themselves and work/live in the Ark Proper. There are avenues for advancement. The menial labor and dirty jobs problem happens when you have this closed society/infrastructure carefully designed to be self-sustaining and then you dump a metric shit-ton of people into the system AND remove the whole entertainment/tourism industry the place was built for anyway.
In their personal journals, Mokoena admits that his forces are for police action not military, and laments that there are people within the Security force that go too far. Chen admits to personally ordering a girl's execution on suspicion of treason (In other tapes, you find out she is innocent).
The more you find out about the Resistance, the less freedom fighter they appear and more desperate and ridiculously short-sighted terrorist they become. As someone said before, it gets almost cartoony and I'd like them to come back a bit into the morally grey area.

THE ARK GROWS ALL ITS OWN FOOD THE ARK GROWS ALL ITS OWN FOOD THE ARK GROWS ALL ITS OWN FOOD THE ARK GROWS ALL ITS OWN FOOD
On the subject of Chen, if his audio logs are to be taken at face value, the entire point of his stupid little war is to save face. He knows the arkoral is dying (it's unknown whether the Founders are privy to this information, but signs point to them not knowing), but he doesn't want to tell the founders, because "they'll blame maintenance", and because "then Mokoena wins". So basically he wants to lead thousands of people to their deaths just so he doesn't have to look bad.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Now if he had TOLD them that the arkoral was dying, and it only lead to the Founders tightening control even further, then Chen's actions would be more justified. That isn't the case with story, however, so it's pretty hard to take any of it seriously.

Yaaaay patch! I'll be able to play now. Everything else is cool but the new abilities seem odd, hopefully ehy'll tweak what they have the now as well. Plus raising the level cap kinda sucks. This game really doesnt needing any levelling after the first slog through.

The lag appears to be at least partially due to the servers being unable to cope with overseas traffic (things seem relatively okay here in the UK, though I've never tried to play with specific friends).
I've talked a fair bit about Brink on my blog (here and here if you're interested), so I won't repeat all of what I said here, but it's very much a game that's divided the world's reviewers (something that rarely happens in the allegedly subjective world of video game journalism).
It's also commendable that Splash Damage have been so hands-on with addressing the issues, with a rather alarming amount of response to player criticism. That, again, is something you don't see nowadays, with mainly a patch released almost out of spite.
Of course, that's just my opinion. You'd sometimes be forgiven for thinking there's a different game in every box, they're just all called Brink.
For criticism purposes, I'd have preferred to choose individual colours for outfits rather than the 5 or 6 pre-coded options we have now, and the ability to wear certain items together (such as the Sloani with the beret) would be cool too.
It's also disturbingly easy to get the minigun, especially as the game seems to think it's being really mean by sending you two enemies now instead of one to fight with your heavy machine gun.
There is no way to cope with overseas traffic. You will always get lag there, that's physics.
Instead, it seems like a lot of people are running servers on shitty hardware and with bad net settings. You can turn on your net graph in the game and see that the server side chops are all over the place even when the client side stuff is smooth as butter.
That was half of what I meant; there don't seem to be any plans in place for people playing in non-UK locations (are there even US servers at all?) It appears Bethesda didn't appreciate how many would actually want to play Brink.
I've no idea how it actually works, sadly. All I seem to be able to find out is that it works fine in the UK and possibly the EU, but it's rubbish most of the time in the US.
One other cool thing to take from that post: somebody earlier in the thread said it would have been cool to have an overworld map, and see who was winning in what areas.
And they're doing that.
Which I think is pretty cool.
