Shepard betrays you and you find out he orchestrated everything so he can show how evil an Ultra-nationalist Russia is. Who ever thought that was good plot idea needed a slap.
Really? Because what I took from it was
Shepard was attempting to guarantee a state of war with an exceptionally hostile Ultra-nationalist Russia in order to draft/bring in more soldiers under his command to stroke his ego by being in control of the largest army since whenever. Basically, a world in which he would always be relevant to the interests of the nation and become indispensible - since he'd suffered such a massive failure back in MW1 which he took personally, it seems. But since he took a knife personally too... heh.
It makes sense, but only as a Hollywood summer action movie. Emotive, not coherent.
I got the same Vyn. It's psychotic, but it makes action movie sense, just like you say. I've thought about trying to break down Shepard's psyche in essay form...but then I realise that's hard work and get back to shooting mans.
It's been a while since I've played either modern warfare but;
I thought Shepard was bitter about the apathy displayed towards the troops who were lost to the nuke in MW1 and basically wanted to stoke patriotism in the populace by bringing the horrors of war home. I recall him saying how there'd be 'no shortage of volunteers' after the invasion. I think they were trying to take him in the direction of a less sympathetic Ed Harris from The Rock, driven by loyalty to his men in some warped way

He's also got massive survivor's guilt and problems with anyone who a) challenges his authority, or b) represents the warrior ideal better than him. From the second Price is broken out of the Gulag and suggesting new courses of action Shepard is determined to put him back in his place.
IIRC, "You've spent too much time in the Gulag, Price," and so on.
And look at the way he leathers into Price at the end. He could have killed Price much quicker, but he doesn't. Why? Besides plot, it's because he doesn't just want to kill Price: he wants to make him suffer for being the soldier he, Shepard, a leader of men but not a leader of men, can never be.
Also see the vicarious risks he takes. Getting into a firefight and shooting a pistol across a river knowing there's no way in hell he'll achieve anything. Calling in danger close airstrikes. He's taking risks the only way a general can, but it never satisfies him.
I hope tthat even the ghost of IW can still beat the pants off anything Treyarch produces.

I do hope they have Hans Zimmer doing the soundtrack for MW3, the second game had an excellent score.

Also, MW2 singleplayer is ten billion times better than BLOPS. Not a fan of either's MP offerings, but I probably played MW2 for a longer amount of time.

Oh, you people. Clearly I put the "don't take me seriously" emoticon in there! See? Now the question is, should you take THIS seriously or not?
I enjoyed BLOPS' SP gameplay far more than I did MW2's simply because there wasn't a section as "I want to punch God in the face" annoying as the favella section. It was the most poorly designed single player FPS level I've played in like a decade. Easily. You're chasing someone and being urged on to go fast, yet you can be one-shot around any corner, from any window, at any time. Fuck that level. Even Khe San wasn't that frustrating. Even if Khe San didn't tell you explicitly what to do (though it did hint strongly), it also didn't give you bad fucking advice.
So I won't continue the BLOPS > MW2 debate. Even though I'm right.
MW3 looks great, i see no reason to be negative from the footage shown, but I'm a londoner, a firefight outside big ben and on the underground has me sold already.

That's funny, I wonder what I've been doing here for the last two years.
You didn't hear? Because you lost some (admittedly big-name) staff members you guys can't be called IW anymore. I know. I know, but the Intertubz have spoken.

Taken from the wiki article:
Following West and Zampella's firings, nearly half of the remaining Infinity Ward employees resigned. Throughout April and May 2010, 46 employees, among them lead designers and programmers who worked on Modern Warfare 2, abruptly left Infinity Ward. All have so far declined to comment on their reasons for leaving.
So the founders and 46 employees left. Thats not just "some" employees leaving... thats a gutting of the company. Would you be content to call The Beatles their original name if Paul and John left?

We sure as hell didn't call them Pink Floyd after Syd Barrett left.
I wish so, so badly I could comment on that, but until the lawsuit is done I can't. I CAN say that IW has only ever hired top-tier people. Although people left, the talent that chose to remain at the studio is by no means B-class. I'm extremely proud of what the teams have been able to accomplish.
Look, I just want you to shoot whoever thought it was a good idea to replace the letter E with the number 3 in those promo trailers. It is beyond fucking stupid. Otherwise, the game looks alright.

Im not saying by any means that what remains at IW are a bunch of knuckle dragging coffee fetchers but you dont lose the founders of a company and half of the staff (including the lead devs and programmers) and just move on like nothing happened... its a completely different company now.
Who knows they may be even better than before but I wouldnt bet my paycheck on it.

It's a company\corporate entity. The people can change, the name stays the same.
That being said, saying IW is not different from when it made MW2 would not be an accurate statement.
The company can rebuild the talent and the know how but the human element will always change the final product. I don't think anyone is arguing that the current IW can't make an FPS but is it the spiritual successor to the Modern Warfare series now that many of the crafters behind it are gone? We shall see.
Look at Obsidian Entertainment and their run on Fallout: New Vegas. Heck look at BioShock. Does anyone think that Ken Levine and his team wasn't the reason it successfully ported and built on System Shock?
I'm willing to give MW3 a fair shake since I love the franchise and I would prefer a legitimate attempt rather than Treyarch making World At War 3: World at Near Future Warefare. They are two different series and hopefully it stays that way.

I hope that the people who claim MW2 as their favorite go unnoticed. The singleplayer may have been neat, sure, but the multiplayer was by far and away the worst ever seen by me in a popular title.
I suppose alot of people really liked quickscoping and witchblading and infinite care packages.
Black ops was a little bit better, but CoD is certainly the jankiest shooter with a big audience right now.
I hope against all odds that we'll see a new engine with better gameplay balance and far less jank. Movement speed needs to be evaluated, that's for sure. I don't think Quake 2 style circle-strafe duels belong in a so called 'realistic military shooter'.
As always, I'm probably the weirdo with this opinion.
Let's at least hope for new death animations and maybe some better ragdoll or something, I'm sure we can all agree to want better graphics.
I have a feeling this iteration will be a strong example of one step forward and two steps back.
I wish there were an alternate game for me, and that my friends would follow me there. Ahhh dreams....

perhaps you should play bc2 instead
I guess you mean to say that you want quickscoping to come back, faster movement speed, and the same death animations we've had since CoD4?
I didn't really say anything more than the opposite of that.
Gonna go on limb here and say that COD is not a realistic military shooter, nor has it ever tried to be. BC2 isnt much better in that regard.
Realistic military shooters? Think: ARMA, Red Orchestra, Maybe Operation Flashpoint and the older Rainbow 6 titles (1 and Rogue Spear) Those are realistic military shooters.

I'm saying that those problems aren't nearly as big as you make them out to be.
Maybe it's because I play on PC, and the graphics in MW2 are still pretty stellar
MICHAEL BAY PRESENTS BIG ASS [strike]TITTIES[/strike] EXPLOSIONS, BROMANCES, FAUX-OPS TENSION AND MORE. ALSO FALLING HELICOPTERS.
Like literally 100% for real excited, I love the ape-shit fuckery that MW2 brought to the table. Do I want realism fuck that noise I want fucking explosions and cars and dogs and fucking sniper missions hell yes. Hope we get more awesome stealth missions though, that one from MW1 is still one of the greatest video game levels ever.
You're absolutely right and I think that exposes exactly where my frustration comes from.
There is no shooter in that old school style anymore.
I'd love to see another Rainbow Six, or Counter-Strike, but I have a feeling that even if such a game were made it would suffer with mediocre netcode/server support on XBL.
I don''t think I can run away to a Battlefield game because of all the vehicles and air support there. It's all very similar.
What's funny is that despite never liking Halo, I really enjoy Reach. It has the slower movement speed and better hit detection I crave while avoiding the chopper gunner and perk driven aspects of CoD.
I really don't hate the Call of Duty franchise, but I know it's hard to have a real discussion about anything on the internet. Used to be able to debate and discourse here on Penny-Arcade without this childish "Your opinion is WROOOONG" nonsense.
I believe that if a magical iteration of CoD came out that matched all my wishes and wants, subconciously or otherwise, Call of Duty fans and even Senshi would love the game and feel that it's not different at all from what makes Modern Warfare what it is.
I'm not asking for it to be a different game.
In fact, I may not whine about the movement speed as much if the hit detection were a little better. That might be netcode or something else, I'm not sure.
Everyone is aware of the way the recent CoD games 'skip' bullets when you're shooting? It depends on the gun you're using I think (which is why some weapons are better than others inexplicably) but the first bullet you fire is registered on the server and the third bullet, but the second bullet in a 3 shot burst is essentially a blank. Drives me crazy.
Maybe if that changed, I might not whine about other things so much. I don't know.
I just hope for a new engine and cross my fingers for whatever that new engine brings to the table.
We've had about 4 or 5 games running on the exact same tech now, I think it's probably time to do SOMETHING new with the base engine.
The in-engine cutscenes they were showing in that trailer looked a little... prettier? I didn't see anything in real motion so I can't tell if the game with have a different feel as far as running, aiming, shooting, hitting...
We'll see, right?
If you want to play online shooters these days there isn't much choice, that's why I have to hope that Call of Duty gets better. Counter-Strike is gone.
Counterstrike is still going strong duder, but it was never a military sim. I mean we are talking about a game where you charge in spraying with the M249 or the TMP

See I didn't understand what that meant either.

Of course it looks like it. It's the continuation of its story. Sure weapons and the graphics should change to some degree but it's still MW.

Considering Black Ops was so much better than MW2, you're already failing.
