Without going into the details of the "whys" or the "check with the IT department this is OK", a family member has asked me to help him archive his company mail from Lotus notes so that he has a backup record of his e-mail separate from the server copy. One of the stipulations of the task is that he does not want to delete / remove any messages from the server.
If this was in Outlook I could do this with my eyes closed using Archiving to copy all items to a PST but leaving the originals untouched in the OST. The PST could then be copied to a USB stick.
Is there a similar, simple process within Lotus notes. Googling for guides shows ways to create NSF archives, but these guides just seem to give the option to move messages rather than copy them.
Is anyone able to point me in the right direction?

All I can find is the ability to reduce the emails by removing their attachments instead of deleting the email, but I don't think you can archive them without touching them. You might be able to copy them into a folder and then archive that folder, but I can't figure out how.
I swore I would never go back into Notes, but I will, for the good of others.
Before I get too in-depth with describing how to set up an archive, let me describe something.
A Notes Archive contains documents that are archived from the mailfile, and the original documents from the mailfile are consequently either removed or reduced in size on the server. Meaning that if you choose to archive an email, a smaller version will remain on the server (or removed completely) and the original is moved to the Archive.
My guess (based on your description) is that you don't actually want to modify the original on the server. In which case, you probably want a replica.
Easiest way to set one of those up is to go to the workspace, right-click the mailfile and (depending on the version of Notes), create a replica or choose "Application --> Make Available Offline". This will create an exact copy of the database locally, and help you set up synchronization. Which means that it will keep the server version in place.
Make sure that regardless of what you choose to do, you are not helping the family member violate company policy. This is especially important if they deal with confidential information.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

I have to use it at work.
I feel for you. I used it at an old job, and when I moved to a different job at a different company, I was faced, once again, with Notes. I recently had the privilege of migrating to Exchange, and I've never looked back. I still keep Notes around for helping a few people with some old databases, but I otherwise stay far away now
Don't get me wrong, as an IT pro, I have to say that Notes/Domino had some advantages over the competition, but those advantages are dwindling these days.

If it's anything like it is at my work (we use Lotus Notes...ugh) archiving is something that's turned on/off at the server level. Since I'm not able to test, I'm not entirely sure how it's done.
