@Tankhammer: The thought that people will think that is basically one of the biggest reasons almost no-one I know knows that I am Asexual. It's really not worth the explaining and arguing it would bring up.
I have never eaten from a Chick-Fil-A and while I now live in the American South where they are plentiful I still will not eat their allegedly-tasty sandwiches because they are a homophobic company.
:^:
If I had known about this when I was down there in March, I would not have gone there.
I'll make sure that I am avoiding it when I go back down next week.
tankhammer remember that being Asexual has nothing to do with whether or not you'll be in relationships. There are lots of asexuals in relationships and marriages and they just don't have sex, and it's not because they don't have the option.

I'm not sure comparing a charity to a for profit corporation is really fair. For all its faults the Salvation Army still does do a lot of good for people that need help.
I'm active duty Navy and let me tell you, some of the things people say in regards to gays and the don't-ask-don't-tell repeal... I just have to grit my teeth and shoot dirty looks at the ceiling.
The Salvation Army's position is that because it is a church, Section VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 explicitly guarantees its right to discriminate on the basis of its religious beliefs in its hiring. To reinforce its position, it threatened to close all soup kitchens in New York City when the city government proposed legislation that would require all organizations doing business with it to provide equal benefits to unmarried domestic partners.

Sorry about that. It's not that I'm unwilling to accept it as a concept, I'm just tuned to consider other options before taking someone at their word. If you and I were friends irl and you told me I might question you a bit about it and if you were willing to explain your side I'd accept your answer. Maybe I'd have my doubts but if I'd known you for awhile and you didn't seem to be delusional harboring an ulterior motive I don't think I'd be as conflicted about it.
It's kind of how I had to learn that polyamory isn't just a bunch of people wanting open relationships, orgies and generally having their cake while eating it too and that there's still romantic commitment there and that it can be a valid lifestyle. Of course it's also a great place to find genuinely crazy people who really are there because they are afraid to commit and hence where it gets its stigma from.
Kinda how a vast majority of priests are decent folks who are trying to do good for their community but the instances of pedophiles using it as a place to hide their repressed sexuality have given them all that stereotype to battle with.

Yeah. They believe they are above the law and try to make back door deals with the White House. They tried to get public money. 11 cents out of the dollar they get from you they spend on funding on an organization that pays the salaries of lobbyists fighting gay rights legislation.
When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army refused to help us unless we broke up and left the "sinful homosexual lifestyle" behind. We slept on the street and they didn't help when we declined to break up at their insistence. I've seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand.
While I always try to remain respectful to people, when I hear a virgin claim that he is asexual and has no desire for sex, I cannot help but hypothesize that this is his coping mechanism because he, much like the 16-year-old me before I changed high schools, assumes he is never going to have sex anyway.
I would never voice this in-person but it's a thought I have. Like I said, I've never gotten to know a self-identifying asexual.
Maybe they truly have no desire for sexual closeness or maybe all the sex they've had (if they've had any) has been total rubbish. Maybe they've been heavily influenced by an overbearing morality system that emphasizes that sexual thoughts and actions are evil and dirty. Maybe they have a poor body-image and are protecting themselves from rejection by denying themselves the opportunity.
This is all just my brain having a hard time processing asexuality into something I can empathize with.
Sex is just such a diverse tapestry of potential experiences that being disinterested in it in any form strikes me as needing more explanation.
The thing is, different people have different degrees of sex "drive". Some people are happy having sex two or three times a day. Some people rarely or never want sex. This isn't strictly cultural or environmental as you seem to imagine it is. Biology has a big influence here, and some people just have very little sexual urge because of their biology.
I'll still buy cheap books there. We don't really have any other charity stores
yeah, the way I see it is that you should avoid the salvation army if possible, but if there's nowhere else for you to donate/pick up cheap stuff that goes towards charity, patronize them

I understand that too. Should have included it in my long post. Still, I always think of all the possible factors behind a motivation. I assume this is just my brain trying to drive me mad.

on the other hand I know a gay guy who stays at a salvation army and some of his older "clients" and "friends" visit him there. he's not exactly discreet about his lifestyle either.
but then again I live in superior Canada, the land of the free

The Salvation Army never struck me as particularly homophobic over here, but maybe my perception's just been coloured by the fact that I knew a gay dude who used to work for them
Unless that "used to" is more telling than I initially thought it was...

I'm sure not all and probably not even most of their 55,000 or so workers are that extreme but that story from Kochi's link is still pretty damn appalling.

We're no more gay than any other gang of insecure testosterone-fuelled young men working long hours in prison-like conditions.

Anna Llewellyn's First Cut film follows an Anglican vicar as he shares a very personal secret with his congregation: he is gay. Father Ray is a warm, gregarious vicar who has been leading his central London parish for three years.
He clearly has a calling and has transformed his parish, building a community in central London, where many struggle with feelings of anonymity. Ray and the parishioners have had their ups and downs but have built a warm and loving church.
Now Ray is prepared to jeopardise all his work for the truth.

edit: aka, a bunch of hosers : [
it will mean the end of CORRECT marriage (aka SEXY marriage) as we know it!
Honestly, who is going to want to have sex if we let people who don't have sex get married? It just sucks the pleasure right out of it.

It kind of worries me that stuff like that can happen concerning a big organisation and I don't hear about it at all until this moment
Is the british salvation army strictly the same organization as the american one, or is it similar in name alone? perhaps that's why, i dunno.

The Salvation Army is an international movement that originated in the UK.

Well, its heartwarming, his church accept him despite his fear. Hooray!
and, apparently, the opposition needs to be constantly reminded that there are people out there that don't agree with their bullshit
