Cell phone reception in the country

So I'm moving out to the country to an area where I get spotty cell phone reception. I'm currently on ATT with an iphone. Sometimes I get enough signal to get on the edge network and surf the web, most of the time I get nothing.

Verizon gets slightly better signal but not by much.

So I've been researching exterior antennas and the signal relays that plug into them to actually handle the incoming and outgoing signal. Looks like around $500 at least for the stuff I've researched.

Has anybody had any actual experience with this kind of equipment? I'd really rather not give up my fancy cell phone for a land line.

Also I have no way to get broadband to use the microcell that ATT offers. Already checked on that.
