A Hornet wouldn't surprise me in the least (though--purely as a matter of personal choice--it's really disappointing: I would have preferred a Soviet interceptor or multirole first, followed by an 80s-American air superiority, before a multi-role like the F-18).

Of course, I've kind of had a distaste for the Hornet ever since I first was introduced to it in USNF. I just don't like the aircraft. Hell, DCS Hornet could change my mind--I didn't like the Ka-50 before either.

EDIT: And I have to say, hearing you guys talking about BMS really leaves me wondering if I still have my old Falcon 4 disc somewhere--the last time I gave it much thought it was still in earlier stages of development, I think.
If you got the disks, grab it. I just installed it today after finding out all my backup F4 disks are missing and my 2 originals are in pretty bad shape, I was still able to get it to work:) Just got the plane started and in the air but it feels nice getting back into Viper pit in f4:) Having a few issues to work out but that's always the case when starting up a new one. Heh. I swear, sims have you juggling so many hardware profiles.

Just a fyi I gathered when reading the eagle forums that the next modern fighter is still under development and they claim the stang has not changed there schedule for that aircraft. I believe it's confirmed that it will be a american fast mover. I'm betting on F-18 of some variant. I really think the 'stang was largely due to engine development for prop simulation. Possibly they want to push their software to civilian flight companies on the none game end of there business and needed prop simulating functionality in the engine. They used developing the stang for that purpose and then polished it up as a release for the gaming end of things. All conjecture obviously I have no idea actually. It feels right to me though. It really should not be a full priced release though as it's just a plane, no combat environment, no campaign, no enemies. We'll see.

Yeah, you're probably right. I guess my main problem with it from a consumer standpoint is the lack of other similar craft to fight against. Outside of just flying it, it seems pointless. Even P-51 vs P-51 would be kinda meh after a bit. If it's cheap enough, I'll definitely buy it just to fly around since it's pretty much my favorite WW2 plane.

Now, if this was DCS: Focke-Wulf Anton or DCS: Kawazaki 100--maybe a different story. Maybe. What I really want, like most people, is another modern follow up, in the vein of a Falcon, an Eagle, or a MiG-29 or MiG-31--with variants of it to go around. Guess we'll just have to wait to see what Eagle Dynamics is up to next. I'm a little afraid that DCS A-10 doing much better than DCS Black Shark (totally guessing, I have no sense of numbers) will give them the idea to chase Hollywood-famed US aircraft while ignoring similiarly distinguished but less famous in the west Mil, MiG, or Sukhoi models. Not a fear I expect everyone to share.

I'm unabashedly amurrican, so I'd love more American jets. I really have no interest in the Soviet stuff or any of that. Maaaaybe the Eurofighter or the Mirage 2000.

Actually, you know what I want? A Harrier.

ED has given enough insight into their "aircraft selection process" publicly to give the reader an idea that they probably wouldn't pursue this line of reasoning exclusively.

So, in every A-10C video I watch, the look movement within the cockpit seems to be fluid and natural, but retains the mouse cursor. How do I get in on that?

But yeah, that's normal. I still play LOMAC with CIS gamers (mostly Russian), and at least one of them has zero interest in American aircraft, and only a little interest in Chinese and European stuff (almost entirely French). Coincidentally, I think it might be the guy who is shockingly good with the A-10 in LOMAC, he just doesn't care about it. I like to imagine he lands it perfectly, opens the canopy, and blows a raspberry, hot fuzz style.

Me, I'm a man of the world. Literally, and in my choice of aircraft.

It's enough. Lack of a throttle will make things somewhat annoying but it isn't the end of the world or anything.

Yeah, most people use TrackIR. It makes worlds of difference. http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir You can probably find an older model on Ebay if you want to go cheaper, though I wouldn't get earlier than a model 4. If you have a webcam, you can try the free face tracking software, but it was kind of convoluted when I did so I just got a TrackIR.

As far as flightsticks, no you don't need a fancy one, but it makes things a lot easier. If you don't mind using the keyboard a lot, you can get away with your current one. It's just tough looking down at your keyboard in the middle of chaos trying to find the command you need. That's the whole point of HOTAS, making it so you don't generally have to take your hands off of your controls.

Wearing a hat (or a headset that works) is kind of annoying though.

  • striderjgstriderjg Registered User regular
I always found it more annoying that the device dictates how you sit to a degree to use the fore/aft motion and dealing with another key for center. But you get use to it and the positives out-weight the negatives:)

You might try FacetrackNoIR, which tracks your face rather than shiny LEDs. It seems to work pretty well in A-10 with the dlls they provide, but I haven't got it working in Black Shark yet. It requires good lighting though, so the one opportunity I got to really have a play around I ended up slumped forward in the cockpit like I'd just had a heart attack because it lost tracking and couldn't regain it no matter what I did. But while it was tracking it was nice and smooth for me. Other downside of using the provided dlls is that it disables other methods of looking around the cockpit, so no hat switch.

Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one.

Man, the worst part about learning a new sim is creating the HOTAS profile. I think I need to do some more training missions to get an idea of exactly what I need to be using. I could just download one, but since I've gotten used to my DCS A-10C profile, I want to create something similar to that.

Apache vs Havoc and Comanche vs Hokum are both on sale on GoG this weekend for $3 each. They can be combined together if you own both, and there's a pretty good fan megamod for it to improve some things. I really need to spend more time with them, especially since I got a TrackIR.

Carcass, I started looking into a profile for my x52 as well. It seems like a lot of the hat switches can probably stay the same - both sims have the TMS, DMS, CMS hats. So it probably makes sense to keep them similar. Radar mode switching is probably the biggest difference / need for the F-16.

I was able to play around with Easy Action Georgia last night w/ no graphical problems. Hotas + trackIR still worked, which is always nice. (Whenever I move to a new place I assume something is going to get busted in transit). I need to figure out how I want to secure my rudder pedals though. Not sure I want to use the velcro on the floor. I need to add something to the bottom that will grip the rug though..

I hate mucking with profiles. I just download them now if there is one that fits my needs and then modify it over time if I need something. Unfortunately to modify the Cougar one I am using now, I'm gonna have to learn about this key file BMS uses, as the foxy profile is tons of REM's with like 8 functional lines. Apparently BMS is able to handle shifted DX buttons natively, which has advantages (for instance in DCS, if I have my toggle-able spd brk retract in, I can't use the keyboard to look at the wing to see how much it's in) so almost everything is done in the program rather then through KB emulation. But krylon is correct about a lot of similarities. Pickle, cannon (no pac), tms, dms, cms are all the same RL. If you take a gander at the BMS 4.32 manual you will find 4 charts detailing the operations of the RL hotas if you wanna get a feel for what functions the designers felt important to have hands on [p. 30 - 34, p29 overview of hotas buttons]. Also, if you do just choose to use a pre-made one (recommended;) ) rather then re-invent the wheel check out {bmsBase}/user/joystick/saitek. No downloading required:) I did some instant action last night (crashed a few times... it's still crashy:( ) and god now do I REALLY miss my trackIR:( Gonna have to relearn the padlocking system until I either get my trackIR back (gonna be awhile) or get enough cash saved to upgrade.

Krylon, good to hear your sim setup is back up and running and nothing got thrashed in transit.

ps: Don't look in the doc folder or your gonna be relegated to a few months of reading technical military documents;) God I need a electronic reader of some kind. Hate reading at 'puter.

BMS is crashing for you? I haven't played more than a couple of hours, but I haven't crashed yet. Fingers crossed, I guess.

  • striderjgstriderjg Registered User regular
Well, I haven't restarted in at least 2 days now and have the 3gb switch on so that could contribute. DCS will often crash repeatably under similar circumstances. But my past experience with... I can't remember... one of the super paks I checked out (but never got into) was that it wasn't the most stable beast:) It's not awful but I've had 2 or 3 ctds, usually during transitions from 3d back to the 2d UI. (if memory is serving me correctly). I'll see if it continues under a fresh reboot.

I have now managed to successfully blow up a stationary fuel truck using the weapon systems. I don't know how to use missiles so I just had to use the cannon. By far the most difficult part is achieving some sort of stable hover while I try to set up my target. Spend like 8 minutes trying to set up my targeting and then 10 seconds blowing it up. I really wish I had a better understanding of making trim work.

Also there aren't enough Black Shark players in here. Planes are boring~

Dude, hovering is all about the autopilot. There's one for bank angle. Just set it to that, get in a gentle bank, turn on autopilot, hover.

Edit; Oh yeah, BS. Not sure about that one.

Sorry FightTest, it's been awhile since I've flown the BS. I thought the first tutorial mission that has you fly to a couple nav points, then setup a hover and shoot some tanks, then proceed to shoot some dudes and blow up and camp was a good training exercise. It just takes too fucking long to get the BS flying again from a cold start.. makes learning the thing tough.

Learning the way it trims is essential though. I think you're supposed to hold the trim button, make your adjustment on the stick, then release the button. Rather than moving the stick and hitting the trim button. There really are a ton of user made tutorial pdfs / missions that can help you out though. Much better than my shitty memory.. hah.

Well, my first instant action in BMS went pretty well, considering I had only watched a training video earlier in the day. Pretty much did everything in dogfight mode, but it's pretty nice. After a little while of downing helpless bombers, I hear "Fox 2 inbound". I'm thinking, "Ah, nice of you to join Fox 2. Strange that your flight name would be the same codeword used when you fire a missile. Oh well, I'm sure it's nothing." About 30 seconds later, BOOM. Not cool, Mig-21.

Now I just gotta figure out this cold start. It's loooooong, but most of it is pre-flight checks I'm ignoring.

    Sir Carcass on
  • krylon666krylon666 Registered User regular
I tried out BMS + TrackIR (with the z-axis vector shit enabled).. very nice indeed. The flight model feels nice, not nearly as "on rails" as FF5 felt. I'll need to watch some more videos and then start learning this beast. I may have to fire up the ol' A-10 in the meantime and shake off the cobwebs. Do the old cold start, taxi, takeoff, and land combo. The extremely simple, yet surprisingly satisfying, practice exercise :)

  • Sir CarcassSir Carcass I have been shown the end of my world Round Rock, TXRegistered User regular
I think I've gotten a handle on the cold start, sort of. About halfway. I need to create a checklist of just things you do. Pre-flight checks are for chumps.

I really like the ATC. I'm not sure if that's a holdover from the original Falcon 4.0 (I didn't play it much even though I bought the binder edition. Too overwhelming) or new with BMS (probably the former), but it's cool to hear the tower guy deftly deal with all of the traffic and fit you in the pattern.

I definitely need to do some more training missions as I keep changing my hud to different things with no idea how to change it back. My profile is looking good, but I probably still have a lot I should add to it. I'll only really know after some more flight time.

I still love the A-10, but this sexy new airframe is starting to lure me away.

This was correct. Had read elsewhere to just press the button when in the desired flight position but that shit worked like 10% of the time and sent me wonky the rest. Holding it then stabilizing and letting go actually does the job. Can now actually set up a relatively stable hover so I can mess with weapon targeting.
