Aw man, I just loaded derelor's "all-in-one guide" (my preferred cold-start checklist) onto my kindle and it's awesome. I have the old one printed out, but I don't have my printer setup yet in the new house. I wish I could get my control diagram on there as well... I used to run two monitors, but my second one is dying so I didn't bother hooking it up (and I love the extra desk space) - but it's hard to remember where everything is mapped all the time.

Yeah, I still use my HOTAS button layout printout for A-10C for certain things. I'll be creating one for my BMS profile once I feel that it's "finished".
welp, yesterday I decided something needed to be done. With my renewed participating in the wonderful world of simming my desk has once again returned to it's previous state of being covered 3 miles high with print-outs I had no room to put my coffee cup down without getting coffee rings on my printouts! It was clearly time to get organized. After a trip to staples and armed with a few folders and a couple binders I have regained the use of my desk space and once again I can drink my coffee without fear. Is it wrong that I now have 3 binders and 2 folders sitting on my desk dedicated to computer games? Have I passed some critical level and should now seek professional help;) Maybe, maybe but I'm ok with that;)

Nah. I'm quickly getting to the point of needing folders myself. Just literally got finished printing out a list of Korean, Chinese, and Russian airbases.
You're not simming unless you got piles of documentation / tech manuals / flight charts on your desk. I loved playing Silent Hunter w/ max realism, cause then I needed to add a calculator into the mix
Ok, I'm feeling good about flying the A-10 again. The start-up procedure is coming back to me, along with the controls. I saw that one of the game updates messed up some of my button layout. All I needed to do was add a custom key modifier for my pinky switch (joy button 6 I think), then all my old "Joy Button 6 + whatever" keys were working again. I really love that SFJackBauer key setup for the A-10, everything you need is readily available to you. I just flew a practice mission and remembered how important it is to re-trim the aircraft after deploying some weapons. Fire a whole rack of mavericks and it's impossible to engage auto-pilot
I found another good joystick layout for the F-16, but there's a lot more shit to worry about with all the radar stuff. It's not THAT much different than the A-10s controls, but enough so that I'll need a nice diagram for awhile to get up to speed.

Just did a successful ILS landing in the F-16. I kinda miss the TCN and ILS having separate panels like in the A-10. Still need to do some training on the avionics because I still don't really understand them.
Damn I forgot how much fun F4 dogfight was. Skills are seriously atrophied. Just lost last DF by becoming a very expensive lawn-dart. Need to figure out how to get the situational awareness bar back in padlock until I get a TIR again. Pull up! Pull up! I would if I knew what way was freaking UP! Lol.

I'm nowhere near ready for real dogfights. I'm still learning how to fly the thing. Almost there, though.
agianst AI, so not 'real' dogfights:) It's great fun:)
Eh, close enough. I can shoot down bombers, but I haven't gotten into tactics yet.
To run Falcon BMS you just need the original falcon4.exe from the disc. Don't think it's on any digital distribution services, but it should be easy enough to track down.

to dogfight you don't need much. I was actually doing dogfight tonight as I have had a few:) so wasn't about to learn anything new. With radar/ir/guns active you need to know tws, designate, msl override and dogfight mode, acm (boresite, 10x60) and that's pretty much it for a the avionics. You need to know the symbology for the missles so u have a idea what kinda shot your taking. Knowing a bit about how the gun funnel works probably helpful too. Knowing how to release CM probably important:) Then, really, if you have a reasonable understanding of corner velocity and know about managing you energy your good to go for a few good times goofing off in Dogfight mode:) It's also fun to do guns only or guns/rear aspect IR. Really a blast getting into a knife fight with a mig 29:)
Argh! Installed Falcon BMS, even got it to run Instant Action... once. After making a number of changes (resoultion, keyboard/gamepad assignments, profile name) now I can't get the actual sim to launch. First bar on the loading screen fills... and CTD everytime. Why it worked once and never again is perplexing. Looking at error logs tells me Falcon BMS.exe is trying to disable Desktop Window Manager all the time and this may be the problem.
This malarky and Dead Island CTDing is making this weekend very not relaxing.

That's very odd. You could try checking the BMS forums and see if anyone else has had that problem. The only problem I've had with BMS so far is occasionally when alt+tabbing it'll mess up my taskbar, causing me to have to kill explorer.exe.
Try reverting some of your changes and see if you can get the CTD's to stop. Then you can add them back in and try to find out what changed that is causing problems. With that info, would be easier to find a solution. I tried doing googles but came up empty.:( And as SirCar says, asking over on BMS page is naturally a good idea:)

I want it, but at the same time now that BS2 is available and updates the flight model as well as the rest, I kinda don't want the old one, knowing I'm playing the inferior product. Guess I'll wait.
Carcass - have you found any good training missions / tutorials for BMS yet? Or should I just do the built in ones? I haven't looked at the manual or anything, so I'm not sure if it's covered there.
edit: don't you need BS for BS2 - or is it just cheaper if you upgrade?
Kry,
They sell both a upgrade package and a full install package for BS2. If memory services me right, BS2 upgrade is 1/2 the price of the full install so under none sale conditions they work out the same price I believe. (if you buy from steam.. just checked and oddly DCS's online store has BS1 listed for 40, so through there service, the full install would be cheaper.
During the sale, bs1 + upgrade is cheapest option. Would be nice if DCS was still doing there half off sale as then the upgrade would be 10 bringing full bill to 16

Currently just been using the built in ones, but most of them aren't that good. As in, they'll tell you to use your ILS system to land, but they won't show you how to actually do that. The binder (and I assume the manual) has more detail on all of the training missions, so I've been reading through those then trying to bumble my way through it. Other than the ramp start, the other training missions just basically seem to be a way to set up what you need to do. I haven't tried looking through the BMS manual yet. I should probably do that.
The original F4 manual was probably the best FS manual ever released with a commercial sim:) IMHO:) Defiantly read that. It's actually a pretty quick read. But remember there WILL be differences as a LOT was changed from the base game. The realism patch manual is CHOCK full of tactical info. I haven't read it yet, just looked at the TOC but mmmm is that TOC juicy. But not for general aircraft operations for the most part. From there all the manuals pretty much grow from each other. And of course you have the real world docs that came bundled with BMS. Also, Carcass, you did link to these earlier - http://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?5822-Krause-s-BMS-Tutorials Pretty good but coming from background in dcs your gonna wish you had a accelerate time button:) Also printing out the hotas chart on page 30 - 34 of the BMS 4.32 manual I finding quite useful to have on hand (but I do have a replica hotas that's RL mapped on the none-shifted side but I don't think that makes much differance -- just sub your tms, dms, ect.)
Now that TARS is nearly at v1.0.2, for various reasons which I cannot discuss there is going to be a brief pause in development of its terrain model. Therefore, I have time to do more videos about DCS. This goes for everyone--if you have a suggestion for what you want me to show you, feel free. And I could do one on the Shark, if you wanted.
Pretty good but coming from background in dcs your gonna wish you had a accelerate time button
Falcon has an accellerate time function. I don't think they removed that in BMS.

Finally, an actual use for my rotaries. AIM-120's are fun.

My deluxe edition Falcon 4.0 manual is one of my most treasured gaming possessions. A massive three-ringed binder of exhaustive detail and research written by experienced F-16 pilots.
Sir CarcassI have been shown the end of my worldRound Rock, TXRegistered Userregular
The binder just has the manual printed out in an easy to reference format, but yeah, it's still pretty awesome. I wasn't even into sims all that much when I bought it back in the day. I just saw it at Wal-mart for like $15 and figured why not. Really glad I did now, though.
And Handgimp, that is hella classy. I never win anything on Steamgifts, but it's worth a try. It'll make that BS2 upgrade easier to swallow.
ya, I actually have two of the 3 ring binder manuals. Back in the day I wasn't always good to cds:) I was actually hoping to get one of the spiral bound ones when I got my second copy but all EB had was the binder version. I tended back then to be hard on 3-ring binders as well;) Still got them but they are of course in the pod on opp. coast... heh, so even for that I'm stuck with the pdf. Also have (again in the pod) pete Ba(however you spell his last name)i's book "Art of the Kill" that I think I got when I got F3 Gold from BJ's. Good times:) And awsome with another DCS Giveaway hg. Good luck to all!

I bet someone with only an Xbox 360 controller wins the giveaway.

The shark might be a good idea. There don't seem to be nearly as many good tutorial vids available for the shark as compared to the hog. Maybe a combined dealie with the trimmer and AP functions and space permitting a quick touch on utilizing the AP/trimmer functions to assist in weapons delivery.

I think I'm going to cave and buy BS before the hour is up.
Best mil. heli sim out there now a-days. Well, 2 is, but having one in the bank lowers the price for 2 even if holding off on 2 till later or sale.:)

So I'm doing my usual sim thing of doing a lot of reading before I dive into the sim (DCS Black Shark) full on. But I couldn't resist firing up the Quickplay mode. The flying I got to do before getting shot out of the sky felt really good. And reinforces my opinion that the choppers in ArmA blow. :P
You are correct that the FM in arma for heli's blows. In fact the flight model for flight in general blows. It's not the strong point of arma for flight. The strong point for arma in flight is the integration with ground forces as it's a infantry sim. The planes/heli's/armor/apcs ect are there to support the infantry. However, if they could fix the stupid throttle the heli's would 'feel' ok and fit in wonderfully.
Sir CarcassI have been shown the end of my worldRound Rock, TXRegistered Userregular
In on the fence on whether I want to jump into Black Shark yet, since I'm balls deep in BMS. I'll just install it. Okay, I need to at least set the graphics options. Well, I should make sure the profile I downloaded works.
