I hope a few of you don't mind if I added you to my friends list on steam. Was thinking it since I know a few of you have the A-10 game. If nobody minds, I'm going to add some names tomorrow. Just send me a PM if you don't want a random person adding them. Thanks.

Nah, PA regulars are always welcome on my friends list.
Just be aware that I don't have DCS A-10C on Steam (and it won't run if added as a non-steam game), so no one knows when I'm playing. If you want to do some MP or have me show you some stuff or whatever, just hit me up on chat. If I don't respond right away, I'm not ignoring you, just probably away from my desk. ;-)

Also, it's certainly fine by me too.

I'm fine having PA guys, too. Does anyone with A-10 on steam know how to get it recording time played? It doesn't for me, I think it only counts the first launcher as the game, and not the flight mode itself.

So I figured out my APU problem. Dragon's training scripts have you start out with no fuel, so you have to request the ground crew refuel you.
Got it started and flew around for a bit before something went horribly wrong and I started plummeting to the earth.
Ok, I can't figure out how to complete the first camp mission in the hog. Some help please? I get in the air, and once the SA-8 pops up on my rwr and release the SEAD flight then loiter around then fence in WP till the SA-8 goes down, then I jog over the sea, and cut in towards the TGT wp, slave the tgp and start hunting. Hard to find shhit but I knock out a tank or 3, then signal the M1's can move and call in the other CAS flght and the cap flight and check in with the jtac till he has nothing else for me. Then I release the M2's and go back to random hunting. Sometimes finidng stuff sometimes not.... and loiter (i think last time I was in mission for 2 hours) till finally get tired of doing nothing and go land. Have not gotten a mission successful. What the hell am I suppose to be doing?

I think as long as your rating is above 50, it counts as a success.
But how do you fly for 2 hours on a tank of fuel? I'm always burning through the stuff.
Sir CarcassI have been shown the end of my worldRound Rock, TXRegistered Userregular
Huh, reading the Black Shark manual I see that the Ka-50 was originally called the V-80. Isn't that the same attack helicopter in Operation Flashpoint? I used to love stealing one in that airport assault mission in Resistance.
Cool thanks guys. I'll add you to my list sometime soon. Since I leave my computer on all day (and logged into steam) it will probably show me as being online when I'm probably not. After I get a few flights under my belt I'll probably have a few more questions to ask I'm sure.
Still can't find the stinking folder where the game is installed though. Google is failing me as well, so if any of you know where Steam installs games on Win 7 64 off the top of your head I'd appreciate it.
Hopefully you didn't install steam to Program Files, but if you did it'll be something like:
Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dcs a-10c\ (i'm writing this from memory, but that'll get you close if I'm wrong)
And to clarify about program files dir - with Win7 (and any windows that has UAC) you don't want to have any games installed in a folder that the operating system manages. I install all my games to c:\Games\ for instance. Steam leaves at c:\Games\Steam etc.. This is important for any games where you may want to install mods, edit files, etc. Otherwise you may get permission errors, write errors, error errors
You can move the steam dir, but I'll let google describe that process.

You can move the steam dir, but I'll let google describe that process.
Create new folder at destination called Steam
Copy steam.exe and steamapps folder from original installation to new Steam folder
Delete old Steam directory
Run copied steam.exe
Oddly enough I used to do exactly that. Install all games into a "games" folder instead of the default. After a few years of wiping and re-installing the OS a few too many times I got lazy. So yeah, now I just let the installers do their default settings. Also turned off the UAC while using Vista, so when 7 got installed it was the first thing I turned off.
So weird I didn't look into the steamapps folder. Looked around it though, just not in it. Or maybe I did but not the common folder.
Thanks for the reminder that I got lazy though, might try moving the steam folder at least. Thanks for the heads up on how to move it Sir Carcass.
I could be wrong, but just disabling UAC may not be enough. I feel like windows set permissions on the Program Files folder by default, so you may run into issues if you don't recursively change all the permissions on the folders/files (I know you can download scripts that do this). That said, having UAC enabled is actually a nice thing (just not on the default level). Having the OS limit what programs do to system files is a good thing. Just my 2 cents - do what you like with your computer
I think as long as your rating is above 50, it counts as a success.
But how do you fly for 2 hours on a tank of fuel? I'm always burning through the stuff.
Thats kinda goofy. The mission won trigger i would think should be set to something semi-intelligent. Hmm....
As for 2 hours on a tank very easy:) Specially if most of the time I was just stuck in a orbit at angels 10 staring into your tgp looking for targets. No need to be running max mil in such case and the a-10 doesn't even have a AB to help you squander all your fuel:)
Yeah I have to play with the UAC in 7 since I heard it is much better (and it IS nice to have some level of protection). I do know that my wife found out that when installing to certain folders you have to install as "admin" to get it to work correctly (which I always forget to do). But yeah it is a headache with protecting the computer.
On a DCS note, I went and added krylon666 (hope you use the same name in steam), Sir Carcass, striderjg and PolloDiablo (there were two, and I just chose the one that had PA groups and DCS A10 in your game list) to my friends list.
Kry, heh, will have to check that out at some point. Can't see myself spending TOO much time in it though but definitely interested in taking a look.
In other news, I beat the first camp mission. It DOES have a intelligent trigger and I found the 'results' field in the ' " ' screen. As makes sense, Razor and Uzi just have to get to Texaco as that was the obj. you were supporting. I must have released them to late the last time I did it. Each team to get there nets you 50 results. When the last team gets there you get the mission complete. Now that makes sense:) Although I actually wonder if it might be timed as I was sitting there orbiting and watching the M1A1's park right next to the trucks from the bradley group and just sit there for several minutes before the registered the win.

That was weird.
Last night I was doing some JTAC training. I was flying out towards the first group of trucks when all of a sudden my plane started rolling hard to the left. I fought it for a little bit, but eventually all of my systems died and I had to bail. I wasn't shot by anything because there was nothing to shoot me there and checking the external view showed no damage. I exited the game and checked my axis', but they were fine, so it was something up with the plane. I'm pretty sure I had random failures off.
5k is a bit high according to wiki where they state they are most common below 3k but most common is not only:) I actually like the idea of random failures and bird strikes but have them off till I learn my EM Procedures but understand completely why someone would have them off. To be honest though they would work better in a dynamic campaign. Man I wish this had a dynamic campaign. In the scripted stuff it's a bit annoying (but a interesting change of pace) to either have to abort and nurse your craft back to base (and then just do the same mission again) or carry on by-passing the faults. If it were dyn and you abort, the objective not being met gets rolled into the campaign engine and you simply carry on. I like the change of pace though were you get a random problem and you have to solve it or if it's a big problem, hold shit together to get your ass back to base.
heh, now what are the odds of that. Today while taking off I ingested a fowl myself in the right engine. Was really confused which led to a rather odd water landing/crash. the log afterwards said landing... heh. Now that I know what to expect I think I could pretty easily bring it around for a emergency landing, repair and get back up if it happens again on take off. Its a shock though when your doing something as routine as taking off your wheels leave the ground, your low on energy and BOOM MWL blaring engine fire light flashing, and plane acting funny.
It's a bloody beast to fly:) Few things to keep in mind. If you're near a hover watch out for vortex stalls if you've read about those in the manual yet. Don't descend to fast from a hover. Don't crank the thing to hard. I'm not as of yet sure what's causing certain 'events' for me but I'm thinking I'm basically doing a boom strike, or whatever strike in absence of a boom by flexing the blades to much when trying to really aggressively 'pull' a turn. But ya, it's hard. I'm still struggling with the beast but I've definitely gotten better. Just stick time seems to help. Remember to use your pedals a lot in turns. Not a plane to bank and yank. It's a beast though, no doubt:)
If your sharky's rotorblades are asloding, it's probably due to the rotor cones intersecting, as explained here on SimHQ. It took me a while to figure that out...and yeah, not "pulling too hard" is way to avoid it. :P
Yup, that explains the 3 or so times that's happened to me:) Thanks for the link. Good read:) And was indeed a rotor strike just not on the boom:) Plane habits. Moving in pretty fast, doing a gun kill then hitting the collective, rudder and cyclic and trying to bank and pull away from the target before getting in the WEZ of the enemy:) Also really instinctual reaction as I should probably be doing basically a 'stall turn' or whatever you call it in a heli.
Have any of you guys tried Air Conflicts: Secret Wars or Heroes over Europe? Definitely not sims, but they look pretty cool for some pick up and play ww2 action (w/ nice graphics). I guess Wings of Prey fit that bill too, but I never liked dealing with WoP's weird configuration options.
There was also a pretty cool looking arcade Apache game I saw on youtube the other day, but I can't remember the name.
Reading about how bad Cliffs of Dover is makes me want to install the old IL-2.. but I'd only do it if all you guys did too. I never really had fun with the single player (not that I gave it a lot of my time though), but MP always seems fun.
I've got IL-2:1946 and Cliffs of Dover, and I'm not having issues with CloD. The things it's missing out on compared to 1946 I'm pretty happy to give up in trade for the improved fidelity. I think a lot of the negativity is coming from bitterness over it's terrible performance at launch (which I didn't experience). I've only played about 12 hours of CloD, so maybe my opinion will change, we'll see. The one thing they could have done much better on was the campaign. It's literally a page of badly written prose next to your briefing. The AI are also terrible (often staying straight and level when you come in behind them, even if they're in a Bf-109).
I wouldn't mind being able to fly something other than a Bf-109, Spitfire or Hurricane. I'm not too interested in flying bombers, so that's pretty much what I've been flying. There are a couple other fighters (like the G.50) that I've tried, but they're certainly not improvements. I assume community made stuff will start making it in the coming months, but I haven't been paying much attention to it.
I found Wings of Prey unenjoyable, and it's kind of put me off that level of flying game for now. I was looking at Skydrift during the Steam winter sale, but decided against picking it up.
I've got 1946 and would be willing to do some mp, with the caveat that I have only really lightly dabbled in it. I really have no idea what I'm doing there. Do want to get more into the WW2 stuff at some point but I have not to date:) As for the two you mentioned, I can certainly appreciate some arcade fun sometimes but can't buy any right now. Tucking money away for a TIR 5. It could be a year before I get access to my TIR 4 again, so really curtailing game spending. And I have two coupons I am trying to use before they expire (MW1 (will use) and CoD. Was a definite before now I'm kinda contemplating). Also, HoE doesn't seem to have a cockpit view and that is a absolute killer for me. (atleast from the video footage) On the topic of MP I think it might also be fun just to have some goof off MP sessions maybe doing something like BMS guns or guns/rear aspect furballs:)

This is what I am wondering. I remember when F4 was released and there was a lot of ridicule flying around about how ppl who got it at release got screwed over and ripped off. Ya, that turned out to be true:) Ambitious sims never have good releases in my experience. A ambitious sim is gonna be a extremely complex piece of software engineering that doesn't always fit in the time table of the publisher.

This is disappointing. I want good campaigns damnit!

I have Air Conflicts: Secret Wars. I enjoyed what I played of it, but it's definitely not a sim. It's kind of like WW2 Ace Combat, but not quite as cool as that sounds. I recommend picking it up cheap.
I grabbed DCS:BS while it was on sale, and also picked up DCS:A-10. However..
My big problem has been getting a solid profile for my X52. I don't have Track-IR, and have no plans on getting it anytime soon. Almost all profiles seem to be Track-IR centered. I simply want my mini joystick to move the onscreen cursor in A10 like it does in BS, and my main POV hat to move my view like it does in BS. Anyone have a basic one lying around or am I just going to be stuck trying to tweak out a profile?
I'm surprised it doesn't have that set up by default, honestly. It's been a while since I demoed it with my X52, so I could be batshit insane. If you're interested in Track-IR but don't have the cash, look into Freetrack. I actually have a ton of parts lying around from when my brother built a pair for us. It cost us around $35 a piece (including cameras), and we bought enough of some parts to build 4-5 systems.
I still have Wings of Prey installed--mostly as a super-pretty version of IL-2 without the planes or environments or depth.
It's really pretty though. You realize why you can't take a Me-262 in a thunder storm really fast.
That feature is pretty awesome, although the fact that it triggers in clouds makes me suspicious. I personally like taking the Me 263 underneath bridges at Mach 1+. It's pretty clear they didn't model transonic effects.

It is a very good layout for the x52. You could probably ditch the CMS hat and make that a camera pan or something for views. You really do need access to the DMS and TMS though.. but just play with it. I think that's one of the best starting setups.
