My big problem has been getting a solid profile for my X52. I don't have Track-IR, and have no plans on getting it anytime soon. Almost all profiles seem to be Track-IR centered. I simply want my mini joystick to move the onscreen cursor in A10 like it does in BS, and my main POV hat to move my view like it does in BS. Anyone have a basic one lying around or am I just going to be stuck trying to tweak out a profile?

    I use this one w/ TrackIR: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=58484

It is a very good layout for the x52. You could probably ditch the CMS hat and make that a camera pan or something for views. You really do need access to the DMS and TMS though.. but just play with it. I think that's one of the best starting setups.

I have tried his. I think I am just going to give up for now. I've followed directions on soeveral of these to a letter with no results. I can get my stick to function in BS and in Wings of Prey, but DCS:A-10 is a no go so far. I can't even work the throttle or control surfaces on any setting. On a basic no profile setting I can get the mini-stick to function during training, but cannot get the engines to actually start. It's looking more and more like a custom profile of my own is in order which seems daunting because it's been years since I built one for Lock-On and most of these systems don't ring a bell.

Noquar, have you tried firing up instant action or some such that starts you in the air to make sure the control surfaces not working is a stick setup problem rather then not having the startup sequence down? Also, have you checked the mappings in the axis page of control options?

I tried again, and for some reason the control surfaces would not work until I manually went into the controls and checked to see if they were bound. Odd behavior. I have the profile loaded that krylon recommended, but most options seem blank within the Saitek software. Am I to assume I need to modify the lua file or do I need to manually modify controls within DCS to modify my POV hat for view and my ministick for moving the cursor around the cockpit?

  • krylon666krylon666 Registered User regular
You need to make sure you have the Saitek column selected when you load the settings, otherwise you'll overwrite the keyboard controls. You may have to set the control surfaces manually, but that shouldn't be a big deal. The rest will be covered when you load up the file. If you see any of the bindings listed in red, you may have to add a new modifier (this is something I needed to do after one of the game updates). If you're doing it fresh, it shouldn't be a problem though. I needed to add the pinky switch as an allowed modifier for other buttons (something like Button 6 + Button 5, etc).

If you think the controls got messed up, I'd try to wipe them all out and start fresh. Click on the column for the joystick, then load the file, then save. That's all it should take from what I remember. The saitek profile file needs to be loaded, but that only handles the slider for the air breaks and maybe the mouse stick.

OOooooo that pissed me off.... not first time either.. UGH! Oh well, was beat. As for what pissed me of, just did a mission perfectly. Few things could have gone better but over all the mission was damn near perfect. Was headed home on final and got directed to orbit. So I orbit. Get cleared in, line up, on the slope everything good, aircraft configured for landing, and time stops. My HDD light is solid. DAMNIT! Within 20 seconds I get the crash dialog:( *sigh*. Very fustrating. Ya, I already know I won it but it's not right if you don't land.

I am beginning to understand why a hotas would be useful. I've got so many shortcuts in mind, and some of them require both hands to use. It's a wee bit clunky. I tried my first attempt at mavericks last night, but couldn't really get it working. Is there a way to slew the maverick targeting thing but still keep it stabilized? Every time I go to make a small correction it starts moving with the plane, which at that point is typically pulling up since I'm not holding the stick anymore.

And that makes me think of another question. If I just want the autopilot to hold me level, how do I do that? I tried hitting the button on the left panel but it didn't do anything. Clearly I'm missing a few steps.

  • krylon666krylon666 Registered User regular
You want to line up your maverick shot in a way where you don't have to move the aircraft too much. You also want to hit TMS up like a bastard so it locks on quickly :)

There are two AP modes - altitude hold and altitude/bank hold. These are your friends and almost required for some things. You need to make sure EAC is enabled (I think, going from memory here - it's part of the start up procedure). Also, you may need to trim the aircraft for stable flight because the autopilot won't fight a drifting plane too much. So after you fire some mavericks or drop bombs, the hog will want to bank to the opposite side due to the change in load balance. You'll need to trim the controls the opposite direction for level flight. Then AP should work again.

So I bought a replacement video card last night to fix my issues... and it's still fucked! I can return the card, so that's ok but still.. it's gotta be the motherboard or power supply at this point. I have a replacement plan for the mobo so I may just swap that and get a new psu at the same time.. what a pain in the ass.

    PD,
Using the TGP and slaving the mav seeker head to the TGP is really useful for employing mavs. The view in the mav camera will be
steadiest if not slaved if you have the FPM pointed at your target. Also for AP yes EAS needs to be engaged and the toggle switch for AP just sets the mode. There is a engage/disengage AP push button. I assume keyboard binding too. I have it mapped to my hotas.

Edit: Also, if flight paramaters are outside of certain limits the AP won't engage. Can't remember exactly what they are, but 5 D pitch and something roll for the hdg/alt hold. Path is just roll if I remember correctly, and alt is just pitch.

    Kry,
Sucks about the card. Have you run memtest? Also I would recommend running a disk check. I recently was having problems with one of the computers here and I for the life of me couldn't isolate it. I was really thinking video/mem/mobo/psu or cpu but mem check tested ok and video card swap didn't solve it. Multimeter wasn't showing any probs with the PSU (although I know that's not conclusive.) I finally grabbed one of the HDD cd's and booted up the disk scan, and low and behold errors. So it never hurts to test easily tested components even if evidence doesn't point in that direction.

Good point strider - setting a sensor point of interest SPOI is essential for all things related to the cameras / seeker heads. My attack runs (in a semi safe airspace) went like this. Setup a orbit with ALT/BANK AP and scan for targets with the TGP. Set the SPOI with the TGP and line up the attack run. Slave the maverick to the SPOI and get into range. As soon as you're in range, lock up the target, rifle, and break off. Once you get good at it, you can lock up and fire multiple mavs before egressing.

I ran a memtest and everything looked good. It could be disk related but the kind of driver errors I was getting before the BSODs were definitely related to the video card. Or the buses that communicate to the card / drivers.. or not getting enough power during peak usage. Those are my thoughts anyway.

What tool did you use to scan the HDs? And the disk error was causing BSODs for you?

I think it was probably seagate tools for dos http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
And ya, pretty bad stoppage. Usually being caused by nvidia's drivers. Didn't have artifacting though, and it was not only in apps that stressed graphics. Sometimes just idling. Yours seems more pinpointed at the video but it never hurts to check:)

ugh I hate not being able to sleep. No sleep, so here's a vid on using the mav with the TGP. (not my video;) )

Also, DCS seems to pretty much assume their customers will own hotas and TIR and doesn't provide many accessibility options for those without. From glancing at the default keymapping, it looked pretty abysmal for someone without a hotas. If you can't map TMS, DMS, china hat to your stick I'd recommend playing with the keybinding to make them more accessible (as well as coolie and boat switch) (single key press and logically laid out). Obviously this is easier to do with more experience as you find what you really need, but can make it a iterative process.

I took my motherboard back last night and got a different one - similar though, so it should be good. I was expecting them to not have mine in stock.. anyway, it was a last minute thing. I also got a million watt power supply. Tonight I will rebuild my machine and see how it all runs. Although I know that since I put so much effort and running around into this, it will end up being my hard drive.. :)

I'm on the fence about keeping the second video card or returning it. SLI would be nice (and 2 GTX 570s should be pretty sick) but I'm not sure I want to spend the cash on the second card.

Anyway, sorry to derail my own thread but I REALLY want to play DCS: A-10 and it's pissing me off that I can't.

Cool. Good luck with the rebuild and hope that solves it for you. I use to love building comps but now it's nothing new or novel so it's just a chore and I do whatever I can to avoid it:) So I check absolutely everything before even contemplating the Mobo:) Actually using a PCI Ethernet card I had laying around right now, as I don't wanna pull everything out to RMA my board that's onboard lan fried on. And biostar won't cross-ship :( ((probably last time I get a mobo from biostar :) ) I broke and got a TIR5 earlier then I planned. I've just gotten to use too the damn thing. Gonna be nice having it back. Anyways, back to flight sims:) And hey, it's kinda related:)

Thanks for linking to that video, it actually helped. I did my first non-training mission earlier, Sitting Ducks or whatever it was called. I bloew up a shilka and some random vehicles with my mavericks, then I went in with my guns. I couldn't figure out how to get the gun sight thing to come up, so I was trying to get real close and eyeball it in. That's when a btr shot me up. I peeled off but I had warning lights so I just called it a mission and ejected. I might be the only person ever to get shot down in that mission. But at least I figured out the mavericks so that's a win for me.

It's tricky, but I'm starting to learn a little of the basics. I've also got most of the stuff from the hotas rebound to easier keys. That helped a lot.

  • Sir CarcassSir Carcass I have been shown the end of my world Round Rock, TXRegistered User regular
No, I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to me on that mission. Maverick'd the shilka but didn't see the bmp, went in for guns, got shot up. I managed to make it back and land, though.

To bring up the gunsight, you have to change the weapon mode. I have a button on my stick mapped to it, so I can't tell you what the keys are, but it will cycle through the different weapon modes like CCIP, CCRP, Guns, etc.

  • XenoCrashXenoCrash Registered User regular
It's the Master Mode control key that switches between Nav, Guns, CCIP and CCRP modes with short presses and to AA mode with a long press. The default keyboard binding is 'm'.

  • PolloDiabloPolloDiablo Registered User regular
Oh, awesome. That was one of the things I could never figure out. It's funny, because I can look through the key bindings for stuff but I never have any idea what I'm looking for. I'm actually really enjoying this game so far, now that I'm learning most of the major functions. I still need to practice things like landing. I typically just eject when I'm done, but I think the Air Force probably would prefer I didn't.

Oh sweet! I'll have to download this to my tablet when I get home.

I think someone else asked this earlier in the thread. But why is it that when I look at hours played for DCS:A-10 in Steam it shows 0 hours played?

I didn't have this problem with blackshark. Don't have it now with BS2 or DCS A-10 but they don't track time as they are added as none steam games. My guess as to what is causing it is the fact that your most likely on a 64 bit os and therefore using the 64 bit version of DCS. I'm guessing steams ability to track a app may be tied in with the overlay in some way, and I know for a fact the overlay is not compatible with 64 bit executables. Some educated guess work, but that's my guess:)

I grabbed the app today. It's pretty nice. The airport information will be really handy.

I rebuilt my rig last night and I think I'm all good now.. I'm not sure what the real problem was, and in the end I may have done a lot of this for nothing. I'll have to stress test it by playing a lot of games this weekend :)

That makes the most sense to me. Forgot that the overlay doesn't like 64 bit. Not like it really matters in the end as long as the skies are filled with A-10s.

That's good to hear krylon666. That is the one feeling I hated when working on computers. On the other hand, it gives you a great excuse to stress test.

I played the Sitting Ducks mission last night. It's pretty fun, once I figured out what the hell I was supposed to be doing. I spent 5 minutes targeting stuff at my home airfield. I wish the briefings were more descriptive, like "Your targets are located at waypoint 3." I spent several minutes scanning around the bullseye, which was nowhere near the actual targets. I'm also not very efficient at all. I need to practice using CCIP to drop multiple bombs in one run instead of one bomb per run with CCRP. I also realized those drag bombs are hella inaccurate. I was probably dropping them from too high. I finally just finished up with my guns. Had a great landing, though, even though my speedbrakes weren't working for some reason. I think I'll spend some time this weekend tweaking axis curves. I don't feel like my stick is as responsive as it could be. I also need to accelerate my TrackIR curves. I have them way up, but I still feel like I'm having to turn my head too much to see behind me.

  • striderjgstriderjg Registered User regular
The stock briefings do suck but the wp identifiers are usually pretty descriptive so you can usually go on those. You can also review the flight plan in the mission planner before start if you so desire:) As for CCIP I almost always do only one bomb per run and suck at even that:) My hit rate on armor with slicks is NOT good (even with cbu-87s). Last mission I did, i dropped both my cbu-87's on one tank, missed both times then sent my wm in:) Been meaning to hope into a target rich mission and just practice my dive bombing for a while. Also, you can change the profile for High Drag 82's to make them not deploy there retarding ballute in the inventory page.

Looks like Take On Helicopters recently announced its first DLC: http://takeonthegame.com/take-on-helicopters-hinds-announced/

I'm not a big fan of the Hind, but I know a lot of people are. Pretty cool.

I just nabbed the demo for TAOH, and while its definitely more of a arcade experience (kinda expected as much) it is a craptard of fun. And while I am currently Gawdful at the game, I am very much enjoying being gawdful at it:) Can't afford the price tag right now though, so i'm just gonna fly the hell out of the demo for awhile:) The graphics portion of the RV engine is imho so well suited to heli's. Gives a really great feel of flight.

I think I'll be playing some DCS A-10 tonight after work. My last attempt was a test run through the startup procedure to see if the game was stable, but my wing got stuck on a truck while taxiing to the runway... so I never got to take off. I wish there was a way to "reset" your aircrafts position when shit like that happens. Anyway, I'd like to actually take off and try a mission or two. I could be down for some multiplayer if anyone else is around. My server is called PA Practice Server or Penny Arcade Practice (or Training can't remember) Server. The password is the usually PA password. So if you see me in-game on steam feel free to join the server. Actually, if I'm running a server I'll just into the PA vent as well and label the room DCS A-10.

I might have to pick up that Rise of Flight off amazon for 9.99. I'm not super interested in WW1 aircraft but the game looks good and I'm sure it's fun to play MP. I haven't tried the Take On Helicopter game, but I may have to give the demo a whirl.

edit: also, you can adjust the altitude at which the CBUs release their bombs. I'm not sure if it's been patched out but setting it to a fairly high altitude led to some serious destruction.

I don't tend to find it to bad. As long as you make your attack runs from the IP it runs straight down the valley. You have a good look from there:) My AI wingy was being odd though. Kept telling him to engage when I was out of weapons. There was a lav, a truck and a parked heli left and he would say roger and do nothing. Annoying. Finally just finished them off with guns.

I know this is a whole other genre of game, but Wargame: European Escalation is pretty awesome and I think some of you may enjoy it. It's a cold war gone hot scenario, straight out of Red Storm Rising. It's a RTS but not super micro crazy like starcraft, it's strategy/tactics over micro-management. The pace is very nice and the unit selection is very grognardy. The weapons modeling is realistic enough, already with a nice amount of balancing during the beta. I think it will shape up into a very solid game.

If you pre-ordered you were able to play the multiplayer beta. It releases tomorrow (maybe today, they're going for an early release) and that will have a full single player set of campaigns. Anyway, I know you'd guys appreciate the topic matter at the very least - so I wanted to mention it here. Carry on!

I practiced some more A-10 the other night. Did some iron bomb runs against the "medium" difficulty targets in the weapon training mission. The first run was a CCIP attempt that went horrible. The rest were CCRP rippled pairs - well actually most ended up being single drops cause the CCIP run took out my left MFD and I'm not sure if you can mod the profiles from the HUD. CBUs would've been better for those targets since they were spread out (and you need direct hits to hurt the armor with mk-82s) - but it's still fun killing all those ZSU AA trucks. I probably should've tried to bomb out all the AA then straffed the tanks with the gatling gun. My landing was adequate, but not awesome. I love this game.

Krylon, for future reference just replace one of the options in the right MFD with the DSMS to do your weapons setup. Or even just swap the MFD's. I'm running my last round of stab tests on what I expect to be were I stop on ocing my system then gotta get some good A-10 time in. Been having some down time from it. Maybe we can get some MP going this weekend. I noticed that game on the steam front page awhile ago and was wondering about it. Thanks for the review. I'll check it out if a demo is available but TKOH get's my cash first for a full priced game:) If I had it to spare:) Unfortunately my STIFF cougar is probably the worst stick for that game. Nice, I didn't know you could add the DSMS to the other MFD.

Ya should. Flight model is considerably more robust then arma 2 AND there is a properly working analog throttle! Its not DCS FM by any means but it feels ok from a none heli pilot:) Ran across some supposed Heli pilots who complained the light was too twitchy and had other complaints about the FM. Apparently BIS made changes the the FM and the 1.03 FM is considerably better (not in the demo). In anycase, it's great fun but also quite challenging. I get the same enjoyment I get out of the TKOH as I use to get when I juggled a lot. Basically your cyclic is always moving. And I feel the same way about this as I did when I use to fly heli's in MSFS. I think sim rotory-wing pilots have a lot against them without any seat-of-pants input. Heh, anyways, I'm babbling as I can't play games as I want to get a good 24h prime stable before I accept that the VTT voltage bump I did has stabilized me at this clock speed.

I haven't really delved much into the internet to answer this question, so I was wondering if anybody here knows why ED made the A-10C the plane of choice for their DCS series? After I found out where they are located it boggled my mind why they chose the A-10C and not the Su-25. Not that I'm complaining since I love the A-10, just curious.

My understanding is they created an A-10 sim for the military, and since they already had all of the data for the plane, decided to create a consumer-level sim.
