Ya, they got a contract to develop a cockpit familiarization utility for the National guard (I believe) to help switch pilots from the A-10A to the A-10C. So they had a great deal of research and data on the plane already.

Cliffs of Dover is currently $17.50 on Amazon. Not sure if it registers on Steam (probably not).
Ah ok, that is a good reason for them to have so much data on the A-10C. Thanks guys for helping me not having to dig through the depths of the internet.
Damn! Hardware problems with my stick. Just fired of a e-mail to TM but I might be grounded for a few. Will probably open her up tomorrow and see if I can fix the stupid rotary.
Thanks Carcass, already picked it up during the last sale though.
That sucks Strider, good luck with that. You'll just need to pick up the TM Warthog now I picked it up in the store the other day (again).. if I would've just put aside like $50 a week months ago I could've bought the damn thing with no guilt haha.
Now that I'm re-reading what I posted, what I meant to say was that I "physically picked up the box" - I did not purchase it. Did you get your trackIR yet?
Nah, I got your meaning. The top TM stuff with it's all metal construction is very nice to heft:) Heh. Pertaining to myself getting my TIR yet... I got A TIR:)
Edit: Actually one way to know I have TIR (other then I think I posted it:) ) is that I have played TKOH. I'm not sure that game would be possible without it.

I bought the ICE as well from the amazon sale a few weeks back. Haven't installed it yet, but I'd be down. Let's make a thing of it and play some MP this weekend or something.
I gotta get my ass back in the air again. Been sucked into a few other games. Hmmmm... to grab RoF or not. It's good price, but damn if I don't have enough flight sims right now (can't believe I can say that again:) ). Oh a side not, TM has my busted ANT rotary in stock and once I figure out how to pay them they will be shipping it out. Time to go dig my soldering iron out of a box I guess:)
So, I've been putting in some hours into RoF the last 2 days. Good fun, but damn if those planes aren't hard to fly:) It's taking me stupidly long just to destroy 5 trucks, but do consistently win 3v3 novice Quick Mission dogfights. Strafing I keep getting into a oscillation usually side to side but sometimes vertically too. Chasing the plane I think. It will come.

Yeah, the same thing happens to me. I haven't played it since I upgraded my video card, so I should try it to see if better framerates help.
Rise of Flight was the first real flight sim I actually tried to learn. Jumping from that to DCS: A-10C has been quite a leap. I still like it a lot, I just wish I was better. I'd be up for multiplayer sometime.
Pollo, any time you wanna fly mp feel free to ask. I really can have fun in the game doing some pretty stupid stuff. Like trying to take startup short cuts after crashing out for the second time and flying without nav, while drunk, landing at the incorrect airbase, then after touch-and-going, somehow managing to safely land when I pulled a 85 Degree of bank turn onto final probably a quarter mile from the runway threshold over speed and way to high:) I have subsequently found what I wanted for that short-cut though. INS INFLIGHT align. Although I need to fire it up in 7 a bit and see how it runs. Better memory handling but more of a memory hog and me with only 3 gigs.... we'll c.
On another note, I was in staples today and had a idea that I think is pretty damn good. I'm always jotting notes down while flying the hog on scrap paper on my desk. Kinda a waste of paper and clutters up my desk. No longer:) I now own a small whiteboard.:)
Ok, so I'm resurrecting this thread from the dead to ask a question for the pilots who have a Saitek device. My new X-52 has an issue where the power light is on for the flight stick but the rest of the lights are off (and it does not show up in Windows as being there). So I have a twofold question, one is have any of you dealt with Saitek's CS and is this something common for the X-52s? Just bugs me since I just started trying out DCS and this happens.
Sir CarcassI have been shown the end of my worldRound Rock, TXRegistered Userregular
I don't think that's common. I would try uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers (make sure you're using the latest ones from the website and not from the disc that came with it).
I know with the pro I can set LED brightness through the controller settings. I would think the non-pro would have something similar, so check that. I can also dim them using one of the wheels on the MFD on the throttle, so maybe the non-pro has something similar to that as well.
x52 has adjustable brightness, but if it's not being detected by windows that's the issue. What does the MFD say when the stick is connected to the computer and you're in windows? I'd watch it from when you turn your computer on, to when windows boots up because the MFD will change once the drivers have been loaded.
Yeah the brightness has the same settings as your Pro and I already dimmed those down so it doesn't light up the entire room at night.
My wife was the one who called me today and let me know that it was off since she thought that I might have done something to it to turn it off during the day. While I had her on the phone I had her check to see if the wire was pulled out. She pulled the plug out and put it back in and it worked. Didn't have the chance to ask her to check the drivers or MFD, but will try those tonight. I'm guessing that it might be a bad wire/cable or lose connector in the flight stick.
The first HAWX game was pretty awful--at least so far as the "hook" was a mode that put your camera about half a kilometer and a little to the left behind your aircraft. Otherwise, it was basically not as fun as AC games typically are.
Guess how we'll see how this Janes arcade game goes.

I like the first HAWX, didn't care much for the second one. But I haven't played an AC one since like the second one, where I bitched endlessly that they couldn't get the fucking gun for the A-10 right. Also, that stupid camera thing is retarded, and I don't use it. Probably makes things harder than they should be, but it's so stupid. Your plane can magically stall because physics don't apply when you have out-of-body experiences? Okay!

I've always been tempted by the HAWX games, but never quite pulled the trigger. I absolutely adore Ace Combat 4, but I know I'll just end up disappointed.
I have only played the demo of tkoh but I really like the demo. If I had the disposable cash I would own it. FYI imho head tracking is not optional in that game. Atleast on expert diff and probably any diff. Try the demo though. It's a differant beast.

Microsoft Flight is out on Steam. It uses the RoF model where the basic game (a couple of planes and one Hawaiian island) is free to play but most content is DLC. Been waiting for this. Getting it when I get home from work.
I remember reading about this awhile back. I wasn't too concerned with the DLC model, but it's looking like it's going to add up. Let us know how it is Carcass - did you confirm no TrackIR support?

So I played a little bit of Microsoft Flight. It's pretty fun! I can't comment to the flight model, but with all of the assists turned off it felt okay to me. A little floaty, but not too bad. I really like the Icon plane. It's like a car with wings that can also land on water. The game looks good and runs good, and the missions I did were pretty fun. The cockpit is clickable, but there's not much to click, about on par with Take On Helicopters.
The bad is the free game is very bare bones. 1 base plane (the Icon) and an old 2 seater bi-plane if you log in with a GFWL id. You can currently purchase 3 additional craft (a Zero, a P-51, and a cessna type). The base game has Oahu, and you can buy the Hawaii Adventure pack to unlock the rest of Hawaii, as well as new missions and activities. I think it also includes the 3 DLC planes. I don't think the base game includes all that many missions, but I just found a job board with several that should extend the playtime. I didn't notice any traffic or ATC while doing a free flight, but I might have missed a setting. The plane does have a radio and the airport selector lists the different frequencies.
One cool addition is you can get out of your plane and walk around. Not sure if there's a point, but it's cool (and one of the loading screens mentions something about vehicles as well).
Overall, it's fun, but I can't see getting more than 10 hours out of it as is. The currently available DLC is kinda lackluster, but hopefully they open up the world with new stuff. Prices could stand to be a bit less, too. It has multiplayer, but I don't know what that entails. It could provide some more fun, though. This game didn't seem buggy, but it could do with some more content.
But, well, it's free, so there's that. It's definitely worth a try and can even be satisfactorily played with a 360 pad (though I used my stick). The download is about 2.5GB.
Cool, thanks for the quick review of the game. Downloading it now and will try it out.
You know, magically after I asked you guys what to do with my Saitek it suddenly decided that it wanted to work. Hasn't died yet and I've used it a few days since. Never did hear back from MadCatz though which disturbs me.
I saw this on Steam last night. With all the defaults and assists, this sim is ridiculously easy. I had to really push the planes to get them to stall.
My first "game" on a computer was MSF on an Apple IIc. I've seen many of the versions since then, and stopped buying because the franchise just never seemed to improve in terms of graphics or playability. Even with 3D cards, we still got flat ground with shitty textures. The game was ridiculously hard for anyone who had never flown a plane before. And once you got the hang of it, there was literally nothing interesting to do.
This addresses a lot of those issues, although it still has room to grow. The graphics are much improved, but the detail was still lacking even with settings maxed, but then this is a free to play game targeted at systems likely to want f2p games. The learning curve has been lowered and smoothed out considerably. I had no problems flying with a mouse and the controls were intuitive to someone used to WSAD gameplay. (I can't find my joystick at the moment.) The idea of flying missions and finding aerocaches is a novel idea that makes people want to come back to try new and interesting things. The list of awards and achievements is staggering and shows a lot of thought in how to incentivize people into playing often. (With the exception of dubious awards for crashing 100/1000 times.) The tutorials are a quantum leap ahead compared to the old ones. Having someone talk you through things while you're doing it is a big help, and the instructor sometimes takes care of things for you. It's a great way to learn without being punished with a nasty crash because you forgot to set the prop pitch correctly.
I could see myself buying some of the DLC simply because the first two planes are simple but boring. The Hawaiian locale was an awesome choice, IMO. Too often sims focus on large airports where there is little natural scenery. I guess it's cool to take off from busy airports, but once I'm up I want to see something other than Lego approximations of a few tall buildings.

@El Guaco
Have you played any of the MSFS recently? I have 2004, and it's not too bad. Some of the textures are pretty crappy, but people have made mods for that. It doesn't actually look too bad, IMO. There is also a butt-ton of training included, like "how to" and such, as well as the missions, like "land on this 30 ft runway in the mountains with a giant airliner full of passengers and don't screw up and hit the side of the mountain or fall off the side" kind of stuff.
I know that the next one, the Century of Flight has better textures and a slightly better flight model, so there's that as well.

Arcadey as hell, but man, that looks fun.

Ace Combat and H.A.W.X. are good, and somewhat successful, games. I don't really associate "arcade" with Jane's, so there's that.
I had their Apache simulator, and other than it being buggy, I thought it was pretty good (when it worked).

Ace Combat isn't on PC. :P But I haven't tried HAWX yet.

And I'd be more interested in M$ Flight if it was like all the other MSFS, where you could add your own planes and scenery and whatnot.
