I think maybe I'm done with helicopters for a while.
On the throttle I have, either there's too much, and you fly through the air, or you drop like a rock, with absolutely nothing in between.
Not to mention that I did once land without crashing, and I turned off the engine to run around, but I can't figure out how to start it back up. Like, it literally won't respond to anything I do. APU is on, rotor brake is off, engines set to idle throttle, but no dice.
I think I'll go back to airplanes. The A-10 was actually much easier. It also has a giant freaking cannon, which doubles the fun.
Wait.... have you mapped your throttle to collective raise(analogue) and collective lower(analogue)? The game doesn't really set up the axis for you. Or didn't for me. Have to do it yourself, and you want the collective raise/lower mapped to the analogue collective only.
Edit for using throttle rather then collective.
No, my throttle is mapped to the collective. It's just very, very touchy. I can't find the spot where it will maintain altitude. It either raises up and gains tons of altitude, or falls to the ground like a lame duck. I've messed with the settings a lot, and I can get it to raise or fall a lot faster, but I don't think there's a spot in between where it won't gain or lose altitude.
I'm using an X-52, BTW.
I'm thinking I'm just not smart enough for helicopters.
There are 2 collectives in options btw. One says (analogue). Just wanna make sure u didn't map to both or map to the old one which is just collective. It is hard though. There is a reason the BS is one of the only single seat military helis around. The pilot of a heli is to busy flying to fight as well. Wish I could look over shoulder and see what your doing. Frustrating. You can check my vids if you want to see how my altitude changes. One thing to keep in mind is there is a lag from power to response and you need to stay ahead of the heli and not chase it. Also, what your doing with the cyclic can drastically effect your altitude. For instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=W-cHqX7oLas#t=133s
That altitude change was done almost entirely by the cyclic, and then my monitors off timer went off:)

Sorry. I don't mean to just sit here and bitch about it. It's just a lot different than I'm used to.
I can't figure it out. I don't know why there's no spot on my throttle that gets close to maintaining altitude.
I didn't know anything about a retreating blade stall until earlier today. I mean, I may have read about it, but I've never seen it or experienced it in a sim before. Heck, I also tried it in FSX, and can't do it. I can also do a roll in a helicopter in that game.
I did the in game tutorial on how to start a helicopter, and had no problem. There's literally five key presses you must use. That's it. It's not nearly as in depth as DCS, for instance. And that's fine, until it doesn't work. Which is frustrating, because it's just Ctrl+B, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+R, Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2; for battery, APU, rotor brake, and engine 1 and 2 start.
Also, fuck landing. Seriously. I just won't ever come down.
Or have the co-pilot in the seat next to/in front of me do it.

It's not a prob. Know how it can be. Just trying to figure out if I can somehow offer some help to get you over the starting hurtles:) If I can't, at least I tried:)

What are you using to record your videos?
Maybe I can make some and show you, and the rest of the world, how much of a failure I am?

It would be useful if there was a setting to overlay the control values on the screen, but I don't think that's a option:(
If you're trying to do low altitude hovering, I know at least early on the flight model for Take on Helicopters exaggerated the Ground Effect to an absurd degree. I was getting exactly the same thing, either you are coming down hard or you shoot into the sky. But that only applies at low altitudes, and I haven't played since they patched it and updated the flight model.
Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one.

Oh hey. It was setting the the throttle to collective analogue, not to just to collective that was the problem. I guess it was reading it as a key, which is why it was either full on or not at all.
I changed it, and the helis are now flyable. I can actually land without fucking crashing. And maintain a decent hover.
Thanks for the tip, strider!
And if the flight model is at all accurate, I can do several end over end loops in a row with the tail raising over the cockpit... From an almost dead stop. Not sure if the light training heli is really able to do that or not. I'll make a video of me doing the flips this weekend, as I find it absurd. As I know it, which means I don't, helis have a really really really hard time going end over end and upside down, or doing side-to-side 360 rolls. I don't know the exact terms, sorry. I'd say barrel roll, but I know that's not accurate. But I can do it just like Starfox can! Maybe it will let me dodge missiles in multiplayer!
I'm a bit disappointed that I can exit the heli, and try to GTA a car, only to have the car run through me. Actually, I'm a bit disappointed that the cars run through people and helis like they're not there. I guess I was expecting to have a crash when parked in the middle of a freeway in downtown Seattle, but I guess that's not the case. In FSX, it will crash your plane/heli/whatever if a car/truck/moped runs into it. I guess I was just expecting to have my avatar die when playing in traffic.
Excellent:) Ya, I consider TKOH a arcade game that is on the simy side, but I have a ton of fun in it:)
edit:
Although heli's can do some amazing things http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2m451SbvhE hehe
Dunno if you guys have seen this, but I just came across it and can't help sharing: http://youtu.be/wwqGsxc-_hQ
I haven't flown in over half a year, and if all the stuff on Steam doesn't distract me too much, I've gotta go see if I can remember how to ramp start anything any more. (I only got as far as takeoff and basic nav in the 'Hog) Also, do any of you guys have any experience with BMS for Falcon 4.0? I think I have it tucked away on my hard drive somewhere, but haven't gotten around to hopping back into a Viper cockpit quite yet...

I've spent some time with BMS. It's pretty awesome, and basically brings Falcon 4.0 to DCS levels. I need more time with it, but it's pretty great.

I second that. After figuring out that I didn't bind the controls correctly, it made the game so much better. The heli is much more controllable now, and I was able to land several times without crashing or falling from the sky like a rock.
I want to do more flying and such, as it was a ton of fun.

Now that you have that worked out you should check out some Time Trials. That's probably my favorite aspect of TKOH right now.
No, but they SHOULD have races or mods for races. Haven't checked though. The new hinds dlc is a dual seater so you can do gunner/pilot setups.

Races sound boring, but the Hind might be fun.

L Ron HowardThe duckMinnesotaRegistered Userregular
What does the other person do in the Hind in the game? Sit there and say "nope, not going to shoot"? Cuz, that's all they do in the game as it is. I wonder if they get to work the gun as it should, or what.
And my impression from multiplayer is that it's basically a deathmatch with a little GTA thrown in. I haven't played it, but it's just a rough assumption based on free flight and such.
races sounds fing awesome! Do some time trials. They really are a lot of fun.:) As for the hinds, I imagine the gunnery is pretty similar to using that position in arma 2 but haven't tried it. I'm guessing custom built missions is where the fun would be in hinds: MP. I think I heard something about using arma 2 assets in it too.
Edit: I'm gonna have to look into the hind combat systems tonight. They are very simple but I'm unsure of how a few thinks function at the moment.

For the record, I typically hate time trials in racing games. I find no joy whatsoever in trying to get a better time.
Try them anyways, as these time trials add low level building buzzing flying in to the mix:)
If racing down a river at ground effect levels buzzing bridges and cranes like an egg beater from hell doesn't excite you then I don't think you have a pulse. :P
And don't forget the Take On Noisecontrollers DLC. It comes with a bunch of new Time Trials that are truly wicked. It's completely free too.
All I've found is the official forums, but pickings are slim.
I'd kill for a custom music mod.

After playing the mission where you fly around filming whales for activists I haven't been able to stop thinking about a Whale Hunters mod/mission, where teams fly around in helicopters hunting and shooting whales.

That sounds similar to the rhino hunting mission that's in FSX, which I found to be really fun.
Except without the shooting part. I don't really know how you'd shoot a whale with a rocket. I mean, unless it's on the surface, the whale won't really be hit. No idea about exploding rockets or missiles though.
The sixupdater tool (used for Arma / DayZ / other mods) has entries for Take On Helicopters too. So you can probably use that as a mod manager for TKOH. Although the sixupdater is one of the more poorly designed pieces of software out there (much better now than a few years ago though).
Oh, can one of you guys tell me how big the Take On install is supposed to be? My install looked like it stopped part way through and wouldn't resume. So I restarted steam and it said it was installed. I loaded the game and everything seemed fine, but I'm still concerned it didn't really finish.

Well. Shooting anything isn't really cool unless you gotta eat or defend yourself etc.

Well that's much better. When I had first played TKOH, I found it very hard to control and I knew something was wrong. I just cut the axis sensitivity in game down to half, and it was so much better. Now I just need to work on my crappy framerates.

Ok, no gameage for me tonight. Too late, to tired, to early of a important showing tomorrow. Really glad to see all the TKOH love though:) Hopefully I can get some whirlygiging in tomorrow as well as some death from above.

Hunting whales from aircraft only sounds about as involving as shooting some giant sea cow that travels the oceans. Which it is, basically.
I personally think that, outside of the context of real scenarios (which most FSX missions took off of), tracking an animal for hunting, rather than just for the sack of tracking, isn't that meaningful for me. It being a whale doesn't really make a difference. Deer feel pain too, they're just a lot smaller than whales.
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?132627-Take-On-Helicopters-Rearmed <--- looks like it will be out soon. Basically merging TKOH with arma 2 in the same way CO and OA merge to CA. Naturally you need those games installed. Been looking at the mod scene and it is pretty paltry but I'm hoping once that patch hits a lot more will become available.
Edit: Also, apperantly A2 mods pretty much work on TKOH as it is.
They [A2/TKOH] are pretty much compatable already, I am using a ton of A2 and OA mods in Take On, even the RealTimeEditor is working after a little trickery with the setup.
The main thing BIS will probably be doing is tying in A2 with Take On without having to resort to putting A2 in as a mod which is the current way to get it working.
Someone else refuted him. But some works. So after this patch, more might. If interested in the mod, guess it's try and see:) Gonna have to re-introduce myself to arma's editor for tkoh I see:)
I always enjoyed the search and rescue missions in FSX. I flew with a group of guys in multiplayer that based out of Alaska and mostly flew bush planes. They would make custom S&R missions that were pretty damn hard. People would either fly them in mp or solo, then post how long it took them etc. Fun challenge. Making something like that in TKOH would probably be pretty straight forward, since the arma editor is easy to use.
@Carcass - I was just going to say how touchy the damn controls are in TKOH. I'm going to knock back the sensitivity too and try it again. Also, what's up with the terrain looking so bad in that game? I've got everything cranked and it just doesn't look that great.
