My theory is if you don't want to be stabbed by a scared 6th grader don't start punching one. The kid did what he needed to do to stop from being targeted, and nobody can really blame him for that. Turning a blind eye to bullying in 6th grade leads to HS kids who take a shotgun to school after years of putting up with some asshole who peaks at 16 and is the king shit of 12th grade.
A-fucking-men. Sometimes a quick burst of violence is all it takes. I was bullied my whole life up until grade 10... at which point I gave one of the main kids a concussion by repeatedly ramming his skull into a metal locker. The principal was smiling when he suspended me, and for some reason, no-one bugged me again! Yay!
But it doesn't always work. Sometimes it just makes the bullies worse.... and it all sort of starts to suck more from there.

A friend of mine that's a teacher told me that most fights in public school are treated as assault cases these days. Add a knife to the mix and it's not that surprising really.

When I was in high school in the middle 90's, we had a kid who got expelled for macing two separate hallways between classes. I think they brought his ass up on criminal mischief charges, but I know that they nailed him for assault because several students had asthma and ended up in the hospital.

Would would be a good deterent is for the teacher to have the right to beat the shit out of bullies in front of the school. Show them what it's like for a big person to fuck up a little person.
I'm teaching my son a few lessons in life, and one is to not let people bully you. No matter what, if it comes down to it pick the biggest guy and hit him with whatever you can as hard as you can. Even if you lose show them you're not an easy target. If you take shit in 6th grade, you'll be taking shit for life. That's no way to live.
