So apparently MS is phasing out XNA. Which means no more RBN.

I say 'apparently' because one 'source' thinks so. Unattributed sources are shaky proof of anything in online journalism. Especially since the article makes no attempt to confirm with MS and the e-mail in question doesn't really deal with what might come after April 1, 2014.

Here is the e-mail for people unwilling or unable to go to CVG.
"Our goal is to provide you the best experience during your award year and when engaging with our product groups. The purpose of the communication is to share information regarding the retirement of XNA/DirectX as a Technical Expertise.

"The XNA/DirectX expertise was created to recognize community leaders who focused on XNA Game Studio and/or DirectX development. Presently the XNA Game Studio is not in active development and DirectX is no longer evolving as a technology. Given the status within each technology, further value and engagement cannot be offered to the MVP community. As a result, effective April 1, 2014 XNA/DirectX will be fully retired from the MVP Award Program.

"Because we continue to value the high level of technical contributions you continue to make to your technical community, we want to work with you to try to find a more alternate expertise area. You may remain in this award expertise until your award end date or request to change your expertise to the most appropriate alternative providing current contributions match to the desired expertise criteria. Please let me know what other products or technologies you feel your contributions align to and I will review those contributions for consideration in that new expertise area prior to the XNA/DirectX retirement date.

"Please note: If an expertise change is made prior to your award end date, review for renewal of the MVP Award will be based on contributions in your new expertise.

"Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this change."

This doesn't mean that RBN will suddenly stop working on XBox360, or that no more songs can be added. It just means that future MS platforms will use a different development environment, which may or may not have the qualities of XNA that made RBN possible.

Since we can't even expect a RB4 on the new consoles, the fact that the next XBox probably won't support XNA doesn't really change anything.

I just realized that the only thing, in this case, that might stop the flow of RBN content is that you have to pay the yearly fee ($100, if memory serves) to get the access necessary to sent development builds to your XBox, and that this mechanism is what is used by RBN trackers to test out their songs. As long as Microsoft wants to keep receiving that money, it's to their advantage to keep this program open, at least until their next console comes out.

And I'm fairly sure that, by the time the next MS console comes out, RB DLC will have stopped, unless Harmonix suddenly turns around and starts working on RB4 (or Rock Band: The Next Generation, or whatever they might call it) in which case they might want to keep up the flow of DLC as a way to keep some attention going on the series (and in this case, every song helps, so RBN would be part of this as well.)

Fuck Windows 8 up it's designed-for-touchscreens ass!!! I've been an admin level/power user on desktop PC's since DOS 5.0, I don't need smart tiles, I don't need my hand held, and fuck you for thinking I do. All MS has done with W8 is make sure my next major build is a Linux machine.

And on a Rock Band note, I still need to pick me up some Aerosmith.

    Hey gang,

For all of the lovers out there this Valentine’s Day, Harmonix presents a collection of music’s greatest rock and pop ballads, coming to the Rock Band Music Store on February 12th!

Extreme’s acoustic classic, “More Than Words” – off 1990’s Extreme II: Pornograffiti – was a departure from the band’s funky rock sound, but managed to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100! As a bonus, every “More Than Words” download will include a Pro Guitar upgrade!

Originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in the 1960s, Nazareth made “Love Hurts” a huge hit in the late ‘70s, making it an international hit for the Scottish rockers. This 2009 re-recording of the track by the band brings all the feeling and energy of the original to Rock Band!

Peter Cetera’s Billboard Hot 100 number one hit “Glory of Love,” from 1986’s Solitude/Solitaire, also earned the singer/songwriter a nomination for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song” as it appeared in the film The Karate Kid, Part II!

Among REO Speedwagon’s thirteen Top 40 hits, the classic rock power ballad “Keep On Loving You” may be their most memorable, peaking at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100!

Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” from the English pop duo’s 1981 debut, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, will also be available on the Rock Band Music Store on February 12th!

Available on Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation®3 system (February 12th, 2013):

    • Extreme – “More Than Words” X

    • Nazareth – “Love Hurts”

    • Peter Cetera – “Glory of Love” O

    • REO Speedwagon – “Keep On Loving You” O

    • Soft Cell – “Tainted Love” O

(These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system February 13th)

    Price:

    $1.99 USD, £1.19 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points ™, 200 Wii Points™) per song

Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; the track marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar track for no additional cost.

I briefly thought about actually putting the time into Blitz for leader board shenanigans since I'd probably come close to the top simply through pure library size

But then I got considered the possibility I might actually get involved enough to worry about staying near the top and the idea of searching through my entire library just to find songs to improve upon is moderately horrifying so fuuuuuck that :P

  • FyreWulffFyreWulff YouRegistered User, ClubPA regular
That's my next step, is going through an optimizing songs.

Some of them are super optimized by other people now due to the tournaments. People are revisiting old songs that had like 400k as their top score and now they're up around 900k.
