Good hobbyist site when you want to learn to make things?

I recently got the urge to be "creative" in a physical way.

I want to use Arduino to make things... like my first attempt will be a quick and dirty ultrasonic range finder for my dad's camper so he knows how close he is to hitting things while backing up.

So I guess I have two things I would like:
  • A good forum to talk about dyi stuff like Arduino
  • Websites and forum to learn about making things like small enclosures and dashboard type stuff - I don't know how to make anything more then a MDF Speaker box and want to get more advanced

Also, does anyone here do anything like above?

First place to come to mind is http://hackaday.com/ and their accompanying forums.

    Instructables.com
Also, maybe you can find some sort of Maker's group of hacking co-op near you.
