Do we have a PC Indie games recommendation thread around here? I have plenty of BIG games to keep me busy for a while, but I'd like to give some love to Indie developers, especially Strategy & RPG Indie games. Maybe platformers.
I know this is a few pages back but I wanted to add.
So I bought Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory when it was on sale.
Start the game up. No tutorials covering the multi-faceted gameplay? Okay that's cool, I will watch the videos and feel it out through playing on "easy."
I make my way through the first two levels with some saving and reloading when I screw things up. And I am in the third mission, and spent the entire game ducking out of the way of cameras and lights. But then at the climax of the mission I can't get to the computer terminal that is in the brightly lit room with no cover. So I cheat and read a walk through.
"Right clicking with the pistols deactivates electronic equipment temporarily. "
You could hear me scream from the next town over - "YOU MEAN I WASTED ALL MY TIME SAVING AND RELOADING WHEN I COULD HAVE JUST BEEN TURNING LIGHTS OF WITH A CLICK OF A BUTTON!?!?!?"
tl;dr - No tutorial = lots of fun working out things.
Finished Alpha Protocol
[snip]
The conversations were the best part of the game, and that appeals to me. The characters were lively (Steven Heck in particular was wonderfully batshit, and I enjoyed being able to ask if I should find a funnel.), with some minor twists that, in retrospect, I should have seen coming.
[snip]
hahaha oh man, play the game another couple times and then read this sentence you wrote. I went from thinking "this was a pretty fun game with a good story" after the first playthrough to "this is a pretty fun game with something like 8 stories and I've only seen three of them" after I played through twice more. For example
SPOILER SPOILER
In 2 of my 3 playthroughs I didn't even get a chance to fight Westridge, let alone kill him. Lots of people have probably gone through the game multiple times without ever seeing him after Saudi Arabia.

Impressive.
I was mostly referring to Scarlet being the shooter. I don't see how that could change.
I'm wrong, aren't I?
Based on your remarks so far, I do love how the wiki article attempts a synopsis.

You can also shoot them out with your pistol, though this is likely to (read: WILL) alert nearby enemies.
Also, it's not like I've never played Splinter Cell: Conviction before, but goddamn...this is my first time trying Deniable Ops and this shit is fun as fuck.

Im really curious to see what Origin will mean for Steam's EA content. I really hope that it will have no effect, but EA has already stated that The Old Republic will be Origin only...
EDIT: The brief time Ive spent with it has led me to believe its dumb. I dont get the XBL/PSN integration if those friends also need Origin. I can kinda understand the Facebook integration, but at the same time its quite possible that half my friends dont game so why do I want all of them on Origin?

OK, you can register games. I just fucked up.
But I guess some CD key formats aren't compatible yet. I registered my hard copies of Dead Space 1 and Mass Effect 2, and my steam copies of Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition and Battlefield Bad Company 2. But I couldn't register my hard copies of Crysis Warhead and Mass Effect 1.

My guess is that some (in time, maybe all) EA titles will be released on Origin first and months later on Steam. Potential flagship titles like The Old Republic might even remain exclusive to Origin. Also, EA titles will probably be discounted more on Origin than on Steam.
I can sort of understand EA here. They have decided to take the plunge and go up against a heavyweight like Steam, and they're going to need every advantage they can get. The "problem" for me is that I don't want or need another digital distribution channel. I buy from Steam and GOG already and I am swamped in games. Origin could be ace for all I know, but it wouldn't matter, as I just don't need it and I have zero interest in The Old Republic.

Is it possible to install a Steamworks game from the DVD and then put the serial into Steam and have it be properly in my games library? Could I install via DVD and move the files into my steamapps folder and then have Steam verify/clean up the files?
The reason for this question is that I'm in Australia and just can't really handle the giant downloads
I'm not so sure EA will actually do anything different with Origin. The store and downloader is exactly the same as before, except with a new name and logo.

I haven't bought a physical steamworks game in a couple years, but I'm pretty sure that you have to put the serial into steam as part of the DVD install process

Interesting. As soon as I have access to my Windows machine I'll give it a try.

This is correct. The disc is included ONLY as a way to install the game faster. It goes into Steam, like it or not.
I've bought physical Steamworks games, punched the code in, and never once touched the disc.
I'm probably the only one who really cares, but don't buy the Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 pre-order yet. It's pretty broken. When I first tried to buy it the sale was failing due to not owning a mysterious, unheard of prerequisite game.
Checking the steam forums, someone recommended gifting it to self via email. I've done so and I have no clue if the gift actually worked. I got the gift received pop-up message, but the game hasn't actually appeared in my library in not-yet-available mode.
edit: Reassuringly, the game does show up in my account history. Still, I recommend just waiting a couple days for them to fix their shit.
Yep, thanks. Snuck in at the very last minute; it's cheap enough for me to both ignore that the game won't be in Steam and that I'm rebuying a game I already own a PS3 copy of.

I have a problem. I try to pre-order Magic 2011 on steam and get this error:
Your transaction failed because you are trying to buy a game that requires ownership of another game you do not currently own. Please correct the error and try again.
I own both the original Magic: DotP and TF2 so I don't know what the problem would be.
EDIT: Looks like I'm not the only one with the problem. Shows me that I should refresh before posting.
Elder Scrolls 5, BF3, SRt3rd, Space Marine, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Bioshock Infinate, Prototype 2, Prey 2.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe we are fucked.
You forgot Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, and Dead Island.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are SO FUCKED.
I haven't played any of the AC games and Dead island doesn't have the emotional baggage as B: AC or any of the other games, but its an open world Zombie survival so fuck, yeah, I'm still slightly less fucked.

It's days like this where I feel satisfied sitting down and finishing LA Noire, even if I didn't like the ending that much. Actually finishing it, putting the disc back into the case, putting it back into the collection never to be touched again unless its to show someone something cool. Crossing it off the backlog
The fuck!? Oh man I completely forgot I bought Vanquish on a whim... *sigh* I haven't even played Mass Effect 2 for more than a few hours, and I bought that at Christmas!

Have you guys tried EA's digital service yet? You can register your EA games, including steam versions.
Edit: Or.... not?
Yes. It's terrible.
