I love all things to do with zombies but the whole L4D thing never caught me as it did others, and I'll always maintain the second one coming out so soon after the first was a blatant money grab, but this is the video game industry and as such a business so it's to be expected at times.
I liked both of them. And agree that L4D2 was the "better" game, but I enjoyed my experience with the first one more. I can't really put my finger on the reason, though. I think it may have been that the melee weapons threw off the feel of the game somehow.

it's much improved over the first game, graphically (HARD RAIIIIINNN), scenery (something other than buildings and dark alleyways) and gameplay (especially versus) wise
The L4D1 campaign maps will find their way on to the second one ... eventually. Some prefer the 'crawling corners/dark alley' nature of the first game for campaign. Multiplayer wise it has nothing on what the second game adds.
I've asked this before but never really got an answer (it's a weird question, so understanable):
I bought L4D2 in Australia. If I redownload it here in the US, will I get the full-octane uncensored version or the stupefyingly poorly censored Aussie version?

What version you get when depends on the license tied to your account and not your location. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you'd still get the censored version.
You could try going to your account page in the store, find L4D2 in your list of licenses and see if it indicates a specific version. For example, I have "Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder)".
I've owned L4D2 for a few months now, but never got around to playing it due to never wanting to be The New Guy on a team of people who know what they're doing.
Any other newbies, or people who don't mind showing newbies the ropes, want to have a playthrough of the game (or at least a couple episodes) tonight? I've got some buddies coming over for You Don't Know Jack, but I'd be up for starting L4D2 about 9:30-10PM PST

Check the tips thingy linked above and just jump in the armadeaddon chat, and they'll probably balance teams to make up for it (ideally an even number of newbies and just spread em and then voice coach)
although playing through co-op once with newbies is definitely recommended for the fun experience (and adjusting to the new maps and enemies at a better pace) but if it doesn't happen, still feel free to jump in the chat.

Kinda what I was afraid of. I absolutely have the Aus version on my account - I was just hoping against hope that maybe downloading it outside of Australia would be enough.
I pretty much don't even want it on my account anymore. I'm not a guy who needs his games gory but the way the censorship is implemented makes the game feel cheap and shoddy. I guess I'll let support know to take it off.
Ok, so it looks like the gift link for the Civ IV contest got all cocked up. HiT BiT is getting an "already redeemed" message even though I know I never hit the link and even if I did I already owned Civ IV before I saw Iolo's gift email.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way for Iolo to regift it directly to HiT BiT, and do you think that'd even make any difference? If me of Iolo open a help ticket with Steam, would they be able to sort this out?
I did think it was pretty strange that all of the Civ IV complete stuff shows up twice in my games list. But I didn't think anything of it since the gift was only for Civ IV, not the complete pack.
The game isn't showing as redeemed in my "Manage Gifts and Guest Passes." So I think if HiT BiT will just accept my friending in Steam I can ship his prize along to him.
Okay, Civ IV resent to HiT BiT. Hopefully it will work.
I know someone already posted it, but I gotta reiterate, buy this game if you for some reason don't have it already. They are working on porting all the LFD 1 maps into this one, that alone makes it worth the $7ish.
Progress has not been rapid, though, and I hear the ported maps are fairly buggy.
I haven't found No Mercy to be buggy at all. If they are playing fan ports than i can easily see it being buggy though (no other campaigns have been ported).
The only buggy map is the finale for Swamp Fever in VS.

A friend of mine from LOTRO has been arse-ing me to buy L4D2 for quite a while now. Needless to say, when I logged in today and saw the daily deal, I immediately message'd him and we shared in the glee. This game is purdy dang fun, you guys.
Man. I've had left 4 dead 2 for AGES now, but haven't played ANYTHING more than what I needed to to get that one achievement for that scavenger hunt steam did way back when.
For some reason I could never get as into L4D2 as I did L4D1. The gameplay changes were all positive (although I still think the Jockey is fucking stupid), the atmosphere and characters just didn't do it for me I guess.

So, my dad's finally decided to purchase more on Steam. I had to argue with him about "yeah, Dungeon Siege 3 is $50 but you get DS1&2 as well." (He's used to GoG and everything <=$10) but I had two breakthroughs. He bought Assassin's Creed and he asked "does this have any train games?"
That last one kinda scared me...
He also saw Mass Effect 2 on Steam (based on a recommendation since he liked the Witcher so much) and so I told him about ME1. At that point he proceeded to find the dvd case and start installing.

Make sure to point out the Summer sale to him in a week or so. He'll be a believer in no time.

I'd still be playing l4d2 if I wasn't limited to XBOX.

hop hop! Buy it for some good online fun times.
Still a great game though.

I know of someone who did just that for L4D1

Does that mean you won't have cash in time for the Summer sale? /sad
Coincidentally, I invited you to be my Steam friend!
Check out the Penny Arcade World of Tanks thread to join us in some fun times.
Only because it's you guys and because I hear the games are darn good that I will say simply....day one.
Free-to-play with all the restrictions that come with free games.
I think he had said earlier it's something like two or three bucks.
Like not being able to customize your hero, apparently, which I thought was supposed to be the entire point of the game. Alright, fuck that.
Okay, Civ IV resent to HiT BiT. Hopefully it will work.

Getting started with BATTLETECH: Part 1 / Part 2
You don't get to make a custom powerset unless you're Gold (subscriber), if that's what you mean. Appearance you can go nuts with.
What I didn't like was the inability to purchase locked powersets with Atari Points or whatever the currency is called.
