So say we all. While news of Vivendi's plans to bring the Sci Fi channel's re-imagined space drama Battlestar Galactica to PC and Xbox Live Arcade users arrived at the close of August 2006, since then news has been quiet.
Today, however, a press release was issued from Vivendi's Sierra Online division that confirmed that the game indeed headed our way, and is being helmed by Australian developer Auran (Trainz Railroad Simulator). Yea, I know, not exactly a household name, but hope is still high that the space combat sim will deliver the goods while we all (read: me, myself, and I) dear of a big budget Battlestar Galactica title in the vein of Colony Wars.
While we wait Vivendi has put up a collection of BSG themes and gamer pics for download over Xbox Live. I...cannot...resist.
"We're huge fans of Battlestar Galactica and are thrilled to have the opportunity to create a game inspired by the TV series," said Ed Zobrist, president of Sierra Online. "NBC Universal is working closely with us so that players will be able immerse themselves in the Battlestar Galactica universe and re-live their favorite missions from the TV series."
The BSG license has a lot of possibility attached to it. It could be a great RTS, and it could be a great space sim.
One problem though: There are like two types of enemies and two types of capital ships in the entire TV series. So for this to not be boring as all hell, they're going to have to get creative. And without having a dev on the payroll known for doing "creative" well, I'm a little nervous.

Please don't screw it up please don't screw it up please don't screw it up

Well, let's say there are non-story based general dogfighting gametypes
You've got:
Colonial:
-Fighters-
Blackbird(stealth modified Galactica Viper Mark II)
Galactica Viper(Mark II)
Pegasus Viper(Mark VII)
Raptor
Stealthstar
-Capital Ships-
Battlestar Galactica
Battlestar Pegasus
Any of the civilian fleet ships could serve as "Protect/Destroy These!" objectives
Cylons:
-Fighters-
Raider
Heavy Raider
-Capital Ships-
Basestar
Ressurection Ship
So it doesn't really look awful for variety.
And the different vipers are, in fact, really different. They look completely different and even have different weapons. As far as I know, heavy raiders are just bigger than raiders and have bombs and shit.
if there ever was a time for a hybrid FPS/Space Sim...that time would be now.
I agree, JUST a space sim would get dull quick. But imagine that AND having a ground mission as well..ambushing a squad of chromejobs or pulling a Bulldog and escaping from a basestar and navigating the ships' innards and stealing a raider and flying to Galactica
I believe the size increase was up to either 250 or 512 ... I can't remember though exactly so take that with a grain of salt.
I'm fairly certain that the limit hasn't been increased at all, but that Microsoft does apparently make exceptions on a case-by-case basis if companies do decide to push it to the limit.
Well, past the limit, really. But I couldn't resist typing "push it to the limit".
Auran created Dark Reign and is a decent sized publisher of independant games (Freedom Force, Hearts of Iron, etc. in Australia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auran
Maybe it'll be a rts to vie against Supreme Commander
That's... that's pretty much what I said. I said that. That had been said by me, previously, not two posts up.
I also said that Microsoft do sometimes make exceptions. Isn't there a Castlevania game on XBLA or something that is slightly over 50MB? Yes, I believe there is. That right there is an exception, and Microsoft approved it. So they do obviously sometimes make exceptions. On a case by case basis.
good dog fights and dramatic in-game events (freespace style!) is all I care about. I don't think limited enemy selection is going to hurt the game one bit.

cheap, accessible development platform for a company with limited financial backing?
At least this one won't get cancelled in the last stages of development.

/insert a generous dollop of caution that this is going to suck hard.
