What the hell are you thinking?
Stop for a completely quiet moment to think about free music.
(Takes a deep breath...) The problem is, we see each other as being selfish and greedy. I want free music. If I hadn't had access to free music, I never would have bought an iPod. You don't understand me, you know. You think I'm a thief, slinking around in alleys trading ill gotten booty.
You couldn't be more blind.
Four months ago, I started running, to shed a few pounds. If I keep pushing through the cold winter, I might look the way I want for the summer. It'll be the first time in memory I'll be comfortable with myself on a beach. That's when my addiction started. At first I borrowed a friends iPod to run.
My first infraction. (glance) More skirting the law than breaking it. I give that iPod almost sole credit for getting me through the first three months. Last time I ran, I was 12 years younger, 65 pounds lighter, and had not yet started smoking.
Problem was, it was her music. I became resentful. I had to skip through songs when trying to not think about what I was doing. I couldn't focus the way I wanted to. So, for Christmas I asked my family for Best Buy gift cards, and finally bought my very own. Ooo shiny.
Now the scary part. I asked my friends if I could copy some music to a handy thumb drive.Mmmmmm, collaboration. Free thought and the sharing of personally passionate art. Every one of my co-conspirators has a musician or band they connect with. Favorites that mean more than mere entertainment.
That's when I discovered new favorites, met old friends. Suddenly it's not so hard to run. Except for the guilt. Heh.
Guess what I did? For the first time in 5 years, I bought your concert tickets. Cd's. DVD CD's (a new personal obsession). Now I'm spending more money on you. My iPod was the gateway drug. Better than weed. First one's free, Apple's just the pusher.
Remember mixed tapes? Think about mixed iPods. I'd pay fifty bucks to buy a device, put a 80 songs on it and give it to her on her birthday. Or when I screw up. Better than flowers.
You don't like my friends but we aren't swapping albums. What's the the real harm in giving me 3 - 4 songs on every disc? I don't understand, do you think I'll stop giving you money? Why should the lawyers get it all? They get between us, make you think I want to steal from you. Give it to the artist's and they won't care you give me their art. I just want us to share.
Recently, I discovered the desire to start writing. As I listen to more of my music, fine tuning my play lists, I start understanding more about myself. Thank you for doing this for me. Thank you for your help in improving my life. The money I give is my gift in return. I've started writing a book. I'm scared witless, but I know you are there for me, if at least illicitly.
I know I've made mistakes, we both have. I know you're still mad at me, hurt. Every relationship takes communication and compromise. We both can have everything we want if you would only open up and share with me.
I'm ready... for more of a commitment. I'll buy you an engagement Zune. We don't need DRM, we trust each other.
Don't you see...? We can finally be happy together. The way we always wanted to be.
Eternally yours,
Josh

I'm honestly not sure if this is a spam thread or what. But assuming it's not, I take it what your saying is that your ability to download music for free lead you to the purchase a product to play them on and then eventually both CDs and concert tickets. But I have to ask, couldn't you have accomplished the same thing, legally, by listening to the radio?

Honestly, no. I cant remember the last time ive heard a song i liked on the radio, and i wake up to it every day.
I have over 10,000 songs in digital format on my computer, and i would say under... 300 are on an RIAA label which means the rest get limited, if any, airplay. Radio only plays the songs that make them money, which are songs that the majority of people want to hear. And unfortunately, thats top of the charts kind of stuff.

he put up a point, no one has really taken the other side.
what's so hard about this thread?
Anyways. Dear opening post. It seems that you may have made a slight mistake with your opening foray into the forums. Generally it is considered good etiquette if your post actually has some logical sentence structure, much like you would find in a book or a magazine. This would help your other fine forumers better comprehend the subject of your post. You might also want to consider one of our sister forums, namely Debate and Discourse as a better place to engender discussion on your topic of choice.
And in direct reply to your post. Many bands willingly put up mp3s on to their own webpages where you can download them. There are also great services like http://www.pandora.com which will play personally tailored streams of music for you and help point you in the direction of new artists that you might like.
I WILL take you up on that offer for a free zune, however.
