I would personally wait until the price on cpoints drop, its pretty inflated right now. unless theres a cap on dil
Unless Cryptic gives us more stuff to buy using Dil, the price of CP will continue to rise until it hits the 500dil/CP limit, at which point people will probably just stop selling CP after awhile.
I like the idea of that farm.
Gotta try to replicate it, are KDF officers good for contraband farming?
MUCH more then Fed officers thanks to them having Marauding Assignments rather then Diplomatic ones. Half of them are 'send DO to Fed-related base and pillage'. A good chunk of the time you'll get Contraband, Prisoners or both.
sold 4 first day for 25mill each, next day I traded 7 for a Collectors edition cd key, so I now have the Red matter cap.
back up to 8 gold boxes, probably best if I hold onto them till just before they go to patch them to bound (as they are supposed to be bound, but they screwed them up making them unbound)
I'll list them on the exchange for probably around 25mill again right before they shut the server down, then with no new boxes being added to the market after, all the cheap ones will sell quickly.
leaving the mid ranged price ones left to sell (crazy listed ones like 100mill + won't sell)
Makes me wish I'd left an old bugged alt in the tutorial. Right after S4 went live, I tried the tutorial and got a mk II splitbeam rifle. Thing chewed through those weak drones ridiculously, the alt fire was a guaranteed kill on the tac drones on the planet map.

Pray tell, how do you farm the gold lockboxes?
The stuff they're offering is interesting to me, but i'll be damned if i'm going to play that "whoops you spent about a dollar, you got nothing! Enjoy!" game they've set up with the green ones.
You sit in the hallway in the tutorial zone and farm the weak drones for the boxes and hope you get lucky. Don't count on it. I tried it once. I ended up with a ton of standard boxes and not a single gold. It takes a ridiculous amount of time, but it's easy.

Been farming mystery boxes myself. Might just do that method instead.
atm they are not binding (a bug they will patch) so you can mail the golds.
Do not open any golds atm, they are fubar.
dropping the same loot as the green boxes (so they are pulling from the green lockbox loot table and probably have the same % chance as the green)
major bug considering people pay money to open these.
Send in a ticket if you have opened any gold.

Make sure you join the PA channel and join our lovely fleet. We have a pretty awesome fleet bank with free stuff.
Also nice talks just now in game about doffs got some good tips. I love my Ghost of Hamlet's Father holographic doff. I wish I could edit the appearance of my EMH BO. I'd so make him look like the doff's portrait. I also love how he reduces my transwarp from 15minutes to 5. Makes being an ambassador flying an excelsior with its superior transwarp drive super effective for getting around the universe. None of the other doffs I have really seem to have that useful an active skill.

Golds have an absurdly shitty drop rate. Farmed 12 hours. Currently have 560 green boxes.
Guess how many golds I have? I'll give you a hint. It is less then five, and more then three.
Methinks they want people spending hundreds of dollars on this scam.
My good will over this event has long since evaporated. The concept was good, but the execution reeks of a blatant money grab at the expense of the customers. Especially since it was discovered that gold boxes are pulling from green loot tables. Which according to the item description, event FAQ, developers, and event description, they are not supposed to be doing.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if that was "accidentally" intentional. And that's not even getting into the ethics of releasing a pay to get items system like this without making one hundred percent sure the mechanics were working right.
I just got back into this since I took a break. Is it just me or have enemies been buffed since February? I have a Grade 36 Captain (Tac) in a science and I seem much more fragile than I remember. Though perhaps I'm just rusty/changed Bridge Officers before I quit and I'm not used to the new abilities.
EDIT: Though I also got this far solo, how would I go about joining your fleet. Fighting Romulans gets old fast, and having people to chat with would helpit feel less grindy, I think.

I'm glad I've saved my gold box, though I probably should sell it before people get all angry about them.

There weren't any buffs since February, but if you weren't fighting Romulans before, they're the single most dangerous enemy in the solo game - D'derix have more tricks than a Borg Cube, and their abilities combine better.
Not sure of the D'derix Defender bug is still out there or not - at some point an unreleased enemy meant for group play was accidentally showing up in place of D'derix Battleships. It didn't do very much damage, but it could easily take several minutes to kill one.

Can you board other vessels? Like in combat to kill the crew and take the ship or to go on a friend's ship? That was my favorite feature of puzzle pirates and that awful Pirates of the Carribean MMO.
No. There's offensive and defensive boarding parties, but they're basically a debuff fight. There's no direct transition between space and ground combat beyond what's scripted into missions.
You can visit another player's interiors, though. They have to invite you from the bridge, but it does give you access to any doff assignments their shipboard contacts offer that theirs don't, and it's basically the best place to meet for a trade since there's no mucking around with instances and shit like there is in the social zones.

Disappointed about the first part but the second part sounds awesome. What are these doff's? Are they basically mobile quest giver communicators?

Yes, welcome to the drop box hell. They've already had 2 previous to the current one. Even when working, the "best" part is that sometimes when you open the gold box, you get the lesser crap box inside of it! hooray! Thanks jerks!

Basically, but they're only quests for duty officers (minor crew that doesn't go on away teams, basically timer-delayed XP and loot rolls). However, since shipboard contacts have a chance to have rare doff and boff recruitment assignments like prisoner exchange and assylum, and rare chain steps or high yield assignments, it's sometimes worth opening up your bridge to people who want them.
Most of the doff contacts on your own ship are accessible through the deparment heads on your doff UI, but others (chef and bartender, consumable crafting and some special assignments) still require you to go shipboard.
Usually don't double post, but caught this in the dev tracker:
Yep! A shuttle 5-man is scheduled for release next week! I'll be posting a Dev Blog about it on Wednesday or so.
Then, comes May And we've got something special planned that will happen throughout the month, but I can't share details juuuuuust yet -- I will say that it is very community oriented.
But, please know that the team is "heads down" preparing, designing, creating and programming for Season 6's launch (current ETA is mid-June) -- Season 6 is slated to bring Fleet Starbases, a new ground invasion, new 5-man events, new 20-man events that take place at your Fleet Starbase, Starbase construction missions, the beginning of PvP overhaul, and new Foundry updates.
Already know something about the 5-man event pieced together from various quotes - Romulan, centered around the Vault. May or may not involve the D'derix Defender, does involve the rest of a set to go with the Reman prototype shield.
May comment sounds like the month will be more community events than content. Real interest though, this is the first time we got a semi-official feature list for S6.

Actually, there are ship-side boarding actions. They take place in many missions.
Players can also trick players into boarding their ship to execute them. Starfleet Dental (The Goon fleet.) had some fun with this during release. They set up a firing line of goons, then started inviting KDF members to their ships. Hilarity ensued.
I was going to just post that video, but some of the "honor system" bugs they exploited in the opening days made for hilarious videos. Like the one where they figured out that any captain ranked officer could set the auto destruct and abandon ship at any time. Cue galaxy class cruisers and sovereigns (Gave the biggest boom and damage.) warping into Starfleet's Earth stardock in large numbers and constantly exploding, essentially blockading traffic for that channel.
It looks like the new Starbase stuff is going to involve boarding actions. If I was going to guess, i'd say we'll get to play out the part of Infected before we show up. IE: Borg cube shows up, starts sending in drones, and we have to hold them off in 20 man groups. Or the KDF shows up, etc, etc. Or maybe they could have us man the station defenses or something. Or deal with Q.
Tons of stuff they can do with that.

Oh god I remember doing the Abandon Ship thing with people in beta. It was so amazing. You'd just warp in, see escape pods start blowing off a ship next to you and try to get out before the blast. I blew up so many people.
Plus when there was the forced teaming (not sure if it still happens) in patrol missions I would be with a group and the moment bad guys show up I'd shout "I GIVE UP!" and hit abandon ship. I really miss being able to do that more often. I wish they would have made it do no damage to friendly ships and left the anytime button.
Also I forgot how massively ugly the Galaxy Class was at launch. Ugh.

So, I played some more. I'm glad the cutscenes are all in text. Space combat still feels like POTBS. Ground combat is better than decent. I just found dual pistols, I'm going to John Woo this bitch up, without the shootdodging.
By the way, I am Connor Ramirez Methos of the USS Highlander. No, it isn't subtle. However, being called Ensign/Lieutenant Methos is pretty cool. Call sign is Nox.
Another strange note, the bridge and ground squad reminds me of Mass Effect. Which is a good thing.

I didn't save the picture of it, but I just got first hand confirmation from a friend that the devs are apparently trying to buy up all of the gold boxes on the exchange immediately after they're put up. He learned this after putting them up for 5 million each.
Setting aside the fact that this is going to cause massive inflation (assuming they aren't doing this out of their own pocket and aren't generating the money.), is it fair to say that this event is an abject embarrassment to Cryptic yet? Because I think we've gotten there.
They've (hopefully) unintentionally committed actual fraud on a very large portion of their playerbase with the gold box drop fiasco. Neglected and continue to neglect making an official mention of it outside a somewhat hidden topic in the bug reporting forum where they admitted that, yes, all gold boxes are not working properly. Are currently requiring people to manually send in a ticket to get the issue fixed, meaning many people are going to get screwed over and never know about it. They forgot to code in the gold boxes as being bound to character. And finally, are now trying to (frantically, it seems.) mitigate the damage by clandestinely buying up the boxes, inadvertently paying off the players by doing this.
The only reason there isn't a shit-storm of Vibora Bay proportions taking place right now is probably because Cryptic's been very good at handling their forums. Any topic that's made to bitch and whine about their poor handling of the situation is merged into a megathread just about no one reads.

that way you only have to look back every 10 mins or so to loot.

It has 2 TAC boff slots, 1 Lt. Com and 1 Ensign, so it lacks the buffed firepower of the Guramba.
it can enter battle mode with it's special console
+30 Starship Energy Weapon Damage
+30 Starship Projectile Weapon Damage
+30% Turn Rate
+10 Weapon Power
+5 Engine Power
-5 Auxiliary Power
That plus the fact it can use dual heavy cannons pretty much make it a slow turning escort.
an escort with 4/4 weapon slots.
