I seethe at the mere mention of Angry Birds. This is me. Seething. Oh, the seethingnessinating.

They should make an Angry Birds knockoff with medieval characters. I'd buy that.

I actually only experience Angry Birds for the first time less than a month ago. Before that, I had no idea what it was.

New PlayStation 3 Model Has PS2 Support
Remember that "rumor" we posted last week about a new PS3 model? Where there's smoke, there's fire, and a new CECH3000 PS3 model has been revealed.

The added layer of copy-protection built into the BD-ROM drive isn't mentioned in the new model's spec sheet, but something very interesting and appealing is.

The official CECH3000 spec page on the Japanese PlayStation website lists the console as being compatible PS2 software, or so the translation seems to suggest. The exact translation reads:

*This product, "PlayStation 2" are having a compatibility with proprietary software.

Granted, the translation isn't entirely clear, but PS2 support has been done before on older PS3 models, such as the 20GB and 60GB launch consoles, and the reduced price 80GB consoles that released shortly afterward.

After that, PS2 support was dropped from PS3 consoles to reduce costs. At this point, though, the cost of the PS3's components may have been reduced enough to include it.

We'll find out soon enough, as this new PS3 model should begin replacing current stock as soon as it's sold through.

Just FYI, sadly, that article has been updated to correct the mistranslation and the new model will not have PS2 backward compatibility.

I suspect we'll never get that again on the PS3.

    Fuck my life.

Yeah, we're never getting PS2 BC on the PS3 again. Ever. Seriously, it's not going to happen. It's counter to Sony's philosophy on the product.

What I'm really worried about is the slim chance that Sony will look at the sale numbers on the PS4 a year in or so, scratch their heads, and say, "Okay, everyone, we're killing PS3 BC. Don't whine bitches, it only does everything!"

Reviewers say Duke Nukem Forever stinks, but developer Gearbox claims it's selling well and now publisher Take-Two says it's committed to making the most of the intellectual property.

Does that mean new Duke Nukem games? Or perhaps a movie or TV show?

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told Forbes: "We don't really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company.

"Part of it is the economic opportunities that interact with entertainment are so huge. Part of it is that we are very creative folks in control. Part of it is we don't want to ever be in the position of dumping something down just to make another buck.

"If we can take some of our intellectual property and bring it to another medium in an extraordinary high quality way, that delights consumers and represents an interesting commercial opportunity for us, we will.

"We have certainly considered doing that with BioShock and with other titles," he added. "So far we haven't brought anything to market, but stay tuned."

Who do you reckon has the rights to Shadow Warrior?

Someone from 3D Realms, I'd imagine. Consider that, even though Shadow Warrior was technically superior to Duke Nukem 3D in many respects, there wasn't a great deal of clamoring for a sequel, and I can't remember one ever being announced. So, a decade later, it falls by the wayside.

So have we talked about MS moneyhatting Namco Bandai?
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-20-microsoft-blocked-ps3-tales-of-vesperia
Microsoft paid Namco Bandai to keep Tales of Vesperia a Western Xbox 360 exclusive.

That's why the belated, expanded PlayStation 3 version never made it outside of Japan.

"Microsoft paid for the exclusivity the same way Sony paid for having Heavy Rain only on PS3," revealed Namco Bandai community manager Charlotte Toci in a Facebook post caught by RPG Site.

"It's just one way the business works, sadly.

"Those decisions are made really high up y'know, we do try and give them the max of fan feedback, but sometimes it's just out of our hands."

Tales of Vesperia, an overlooked JRPG, comes thoroughly recommended by Eurogamer.

"Namco is to be applauded for updating the series with no small amount of consideration and flair, an effort that has resulted in the strongest entry to the aging series yet, and one which makes up for its lack of polish with an abundance of detail, character and, dare I say it, soul," wrote Simon Parkin in Eurogamer's Tales of Vesperia review.

    Moneyhats. Indeed shocking. *nod nod*

I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to come to that conclusion, but yes. A lot of people were blaming "laziness" or "disinterest" in not wanting a full localization and translation of the PS3 version finally brought over to the United States, but this makes as much sense, at least to me. Granted, I personally don't mind. I though the US version was a very good localization (though apparently the entire thing is voiced in the Japanese version, which I find really surprising), and I should probably get around to finishing it.

I have a bit more faith in Gearbox to be able to at least make a competent shooter, regardless of any of the other aspects of the game.

That is more than 3D Realms was capable of doing in the end.

Ahyep, Gearbox certainly could... assuming the current Duke doesn't leave such a bad taste in everyone's mouths that they wouldn't give an actually good sequel a chance.

Anyway. Moneyhatting Tales of Vesperia? That's odd. Does it actually sell over here?

Duke Forever had some extremly poor judgement calls that, even if they're not the fault of Gearbox, Gearbox should have at least gone "No, hey, that's stupid. We need to fix that before launch."

Borderlands was awesome though, so I'll slide a potential Duke sequel into neutral territory and wait to see what the buzz ends up being.

this was already talked to death months ago, Gearbox only wanted the Duke IP so they bought it along with Forever. They released Forever hoping it would generate interest in Duke again so that they can go and make their own Duke game post Forever. The fact that forever is horrible is not shocking news and I'm sure deep down randy pitchford knows it sucks but it was a marketing move.
