They didn't flock to them because they were basically PS2 versions, or worse. If the next console is on the same graphical level or better and has a standard controller, they've honestly got a decent shot at capturing some of that market.
Actually gamers kind of did flock to the CoD Wii games. They didn't get to 360/PS3 levels but most of them sold pretty respectively, perhaps just out of sheer user base.
But it's not going to have the same graphical level. Or better. The Wii 2, next generation, will be a generation behind the PS4/720. None of them have broken a million sales in the US on the Wii either. Maybe [email protected], but I can't find specific numbers. Kotaku cites CoD4 MW as selling less than 100K it's first month.
They may "capture some of that market" but only on a level that will relegate it to the status quo with the Wii being thought of third in development. I don't see how that's supposed to get developers excited.
Gamers will flock to the console regardless as it will be the only way to play Nintendo games.
It will sell tons simply on this merit alone. It will not compete for the same user base as the 360/PS3. Why would you even want it to?

Nintendo does things its own way. I dont think they're going to include inferior controls as standard inside the box just because people like terrible things.

But we are entering an area of diminishing returns so the difference between the PS4/720 and Cafe will be perceived as much less than that the current gen. It's basically the same reason that CoD doesn't sell better on the PC than on PS360 even though a $100 video card will easily out perform the consoles these days.

They don't have to worry about the next gen from Microsoft/Sony though, because neither of those companies have announced a new console. They only have to worry about competing with the 360/PS3, unless the other two platform holders jump the gun and release ahead or near Nintendo. But as the 3DS has shown you need to give consumers a compelling reason to leave whatever they already have for your new ecosystem. They have to answer the question "Why do I buy this over staying with my Wii/360/PS3?"

To a point, but I'm not sure every gamer requires Nintendo titles. Many of us do, but not everyone.
For instance, PopCap's Plants vs Zombies costs £7.20 on Nintendo's device. It can be downloaded today for £1.79 on the Apple App Store.
RPG Zenonia suffers an even more astonishing hike. It too costs £7.20 on the eShop. On the App Store it's 59p.
Tetris Party Live costs £4.50 on Nintendo's machine while EA's Tetris costs 59p on iPhone, while Pop+ Solo is priced at £4.50. The original Pop is £2.99 from Apple.

This is more probable, but they'll need more than merely a touch screen in the controller. Secondly if price is entering the equation, then buying MW3 or BF3 for your already owned PS3/360 for $60 will go up against paying $60 for the Wii 2 version, plus the cost of the Wii 2, which doesn't look to be cheap.
It would work well as a launch title. CoD fans interested in Wii 2 would have a reason to make the jump. Doesn't look like the case. Both launch in a few months and Cafe launches, at best, Q2 next year but most likely December.
Yeah, but by the same token, not every gamer requires what's on either Sony or MS's systems.
The one thing you're certain to get on a Nintendo System is Nintendo games though and they're pretty popular, all said and done.
Yes, but you're not quite getting me.
What gets the COD player to switch from 360 to Cafe/Stream/Current? Or the Wii Sports casual player?
For the 3DS, Nintendo believed that answer was "3D", but the system undersold what they were expecting. Could it have done better with Zelda as a launch title? Maybe.
The 360 sold on better graphics. The PS3 on better graphics and Blu-Ray. The Wii on a brand new console scheme. If the Cafe/Stream/Current is the same graphical quality as the first two in the list, what makes a consumer switch early on?
I'm not saying Nintendo can't make that case, just saying it's a question they need to answer.
The Xperia Play's finally getting released, and I've seen some more of the Kristen Schaal ads up. But there's something else odd... watch this closely.
And the end bit is the same for all the other ads. Yep... the banner game for the Xperia Play is Gameloft's Modern Warfare ripoff.
Also, I think I found one of the biggest hits of E3.
Versions of The Sims have appeared on every gaming platform, so it's no surprise that EA is bringing its virtual people to Facebook with The Sims Social. When EA entered the social space in 2009, The Sims seemed to be the perfect franchise.
From what we saw in the trailer, you interact with your Facebook friends in Sim form, meaning you can talk, do activities, and even romance and fall in love. The trailer outlined a young girl who apparently got very lucky with one of her male friends, virtually of course.

They said that about Sims Online too and look how that turned out. They should just call the damn thing Virtual Brothel and go with it.

A new study by the Entertainment Software Association has found that 72 percent of American households play video games, while 82 percent of gamers are adults.
Titled '2011 Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry', the research study sourced nearly 1,200 nationally representative households, and found that the average American gamer is 37 years old.
It was also noted that 42 percent of gamers are female, while women over the age of 18 make up more than one-third of all gamers in the U.S.
"The Blackwater team is comprised of an amazing group of individuals and we're proud to work with them to create a video game that showcases their talent and courage," said Ian Howe, President, 505 Games. "Being able to get the controller out of player's hands with Kinect and have them on the ground and immersed in the experience will give them a glimpse of what it takes to be a member of an elite fighting force."
Xe is currently facing a lawsuit filed by former employees claiming that the security company fraudulently billed the US military as part of a $1 billion contract to provide security services in Iraq and Afghanistan. The company's image has suffered since a 2007 shooting in Baghdad which resulted in federal charges against several Blackwater employees.
The Blackwater game is being developed by Zombie Studios, a team with previous experience in the military first-person genre. Zombie developed the near-future shooter Blacklight: Tango Down, and is working on a free-to-play sequel to that title as well.
For more on Zombie's previous effort, check out Gamespot's review of Blacklight: Tango Down.
I have no idea how this looks like a good idea to anyone at all.
For all the love and money pits (edit: that is to say, giant pits filled with money) several shooters inspire these days, the source material alone kind of makes me want this to fail hard.
That said, there's some chilling commentary to mine for discussion regarding the often nigh-psychopathic/sociopathic creatures we portray ourselves to be through the medium that requires little thought other than "I shoot the mans and makes them fall down".
But then I get called a Jack Thompson supporter and am crucified in the court of public opinion, and I'm not falling for that one again.

They haven't done a good job explaining it. They said they don't want it to be considered a portable console... but I keep seeing game announcements for it. Maybe this is the real successor to the DS? Maybe the two will converge into one product?
It is a new console. The console streams to the controller while also displaying shit on the TV like others. Games can be designed to just use the controller with the console streaming to it instead of both the TV and controller. It is fully BC with the Wii, including the accessories.
Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U will somehow interact with each other, but it looks like a decent ways away due to the head still working on Kid Icarus.
I really like what they're doing with it. I'm intrigued. Maybe will grab one but I'm getting "expensive as heck" vibes from it already. the AR stuff is pretty killer, though. Alternate views, etc.
It's a controller for the Wii 2. Though considering you and half the E3 thread thought that it was just some sort of an add-on for the Wii (WiiU doesn't really help), Nintendo's going to have to tread very, very carefully and make sure everyone instantly knows it's a crazy dual console thing and not an accessory or a second portable. Especially since no console has really done anything like this before.
That said, the thing managed to get more third-party hardcore games announced for it than, well, third-party hardcore games that actually got released for the Wii. Looks like Nintendo really is doing better with third parties this time.
And the new Mario game and Mario Kart hitting the 3DS this year should solve the "it's got no games" problem, at least for a while. We'll see what happens to sales after that.
It's somewhat similar to the Remote Play function the PSP had with the PS3, but it's an actual controller so there're differences (with every system so every game will support it some way but obviously can't stream music or videos over the internet). Apparently you can only use one at a time though, so if you've got multiple players they'll need to use a Wiimote, classic controller or something else.
So here they are: the console itself will run in full HD, via HDMI, but the touchscreen isn't HD. The console has internal Flash memory which can be augmented with "SD Card or USB solutions". It will play optical disks and downloadable content, and will be backwards-compatible with Wii software. And it will launch some time between 1 April and 31 December 2012.
Also describes some tech demos that make it look like Nintendo is going to make at least one or two games using both the Wiimote and tabletie thing for multiple players.
Also, they did a tech demo for HD shit using Zelda like that one Gamecube tech demo.

Hmmm. What happens if four people want to play the Wii U?

The presentation was done in the wrong manner, since half the people who saw it think that it's just a new controller for the Wii.
That said, the same question remains, how do you sell it to current owners of the Wii/360/PS3?
I think players will be waiting for the that HD Zelda, I assume they only showed 2012 multiplat games for a reason. It's also why EA is tiptoeing around Battlefield 3 for WiiU, since it'll be out on 360 and PS3 this year.
Nintendo may have just extended this console cycle a few more years for Sony and MS.
Yep. They're going to ride this out and get more sales from the Move and Kinect if they can.

ChAIR Entertainment's Infinity Blade for iOS is a conquering hero of sales, surpassing $10 million in sales during the first six months of release.
"Infinity Blade's success proves that triple-A gaming experiences can be hugely successful on iOS and that there is a valuable, pent up demand for premium content like this," said Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games.
ChAIR parent-company Epic also took the opportunity to note that the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free edition of Unreal Engine 3, has reached 800,000 unique installations.

Fortunately the chances of it bombing are pretty high if its anything like the last game Zombie Studios shat out.
Alright everybody. Pack it up. Let's go home.
