So, is there a guide for setting up a server that doesn't have tons of people arguing over how easy and how horrible wrong it is at the same time? I bought my friend and I a copy to play together without realizing the blackhole of doom that trying to set up a Terraria server seems to be.
You can host&play or you can run the server app in the Terraria folder. Either way it is very straightforward.
The hardest part is opening the port (default is 7777) on your router.
This.
Its a pain only because there is alot of nonsense on the web about how to do it. Alot of it is probably because in previous versions there were different ways.
If you are still having trouble shoot me a PM, as I just did this yesterday.
I've played this game for about an hour and I'm not sure what exactly I should do.
I'm feeling very underwhelmed and I'm not sure where all the praise came from.
I managed to get a little house made and I mined some iron.
What makes this game fun?
I am not asking sarcastically.
For me, the most fun was with a friend or two. Pottering around, exploring by yourself, collecting loot, and building stuff can be fun, but throw in a couple of people to share the experience with, and the fun times roll in.
In your first hour I guess you'll be mostly finding your feet. After you've got a little house set up, head out to explore - instead of digging down, look out for natural caves that will then open out into expansive underground cavern networks. In them you'll find more resources, more monsters, and I won't spoil anything, but plenty more goodies (LOOOOT!).
So uh....went to fight the dungeon guardian. Got him down to about 500HP when he just vanished, and the battle music died off - no 'Boss defeated!' message or anything. Gave it a couple minutes...and one of his hands kinda plonked down beside me, dead.
Off I do inside the dungeon, and nothing attacks me. Go down a little further, and get instagibbed by the flying skull heads.
Ugh, yay glitching out.
Did it roll over to daytime when it happened? He'll instakill you when the sun rises.
It was only about 1/3 of the way into the night, so it looks like it was just an honest glitch on the games part. I went back during the day, the old man was there again so I just waited till the next night and kicked his ass again.
So far Cobalt Shield and Magic Missile from the dungeon.
This game is damn awesome; I stayed up until 2am, which I am regretting right about now, but it was so fun.
My only wish is for some way to export a graphic of the map. I'm starting to get kinda lost down there (and with all the water I have moved it's a bit on the dangerous side.)

Just the rooms are done, I'm still pondering exactly what shape I want to make it. I initially was leaning towards a standard flying saucer, but the sheer amount of sand that would take makes me tired just thinking about it. I thought of maybe making it look like that silly old flying thingy jeff used to get to theed in earthbound, but again, too efforty. Right now I'm leaning heavily towards something a bit like a battlecruiser from sc, or the old galaga ship.
So I can't get the demolitionist to arrive even though I have more than enough houses and 1 dynamite and over 10 bombs. I can't figure out why he won't arrive.
I've spent the past couple hours on a large map shooting up to see if I can find a floating island and its frustrating that I haven't found any. Can someone give me any tips?
The reason why I'm trying to find a better weapon is because I'm in full gold gear but in order to kill a boss I need a better weapon than some shitty goldsword. There's a kickass weapon that shoots stars that's in the floating island but I could really use any kickass weapon it doesn't need to be that.
So yeah, how do I find a floating island? I just keep shooting at the sky and hope the bullet comes crashing back down but it never does.
P.s. Fuck corruption. 99999 flying eye monsters spawn. and fuck eye of cthulu for spawning and killing me after running for 15+ min in one direction ugh. This feels like Diablo. In order to kill a boss I need the gear from the boss, blah.
I am actually having fun with this game, picked it up a day or two ago on steam sale. Just annoyed at the point in the game I'm at.
edit: bah so it turns out normal bullets don't ricochet back down. I have to hear a loud thumping sound. I think I just wasted 2.5 hrs of my life:(.
Not a ton of new details, but more explanation of the balance changes. Basically they plan on making the game considerably harder and encourage people to restart their characters.

Worth it for the inventory management. I wonder if I should hold off designing my home until they release the new patch. Sounds like a lot of world-related changes are going to require me to build a new one.
if you don't want to use a world mapping program, you'll need to craft a depth meter (which is made out of gold and other stuff) and climb to about 500-700 Above and then build left or right
Linked because it is god damn huge because I couldn't photoedit my way out of a paper bag. I'm pretty proud of this crazy thing

OH! I forgot to mention, I finally encountered the King Ooze mini-boss! It wasn't on my own server though. My friend pulled my arm into helping her remodel her in-game house and we ran around exploring for the dungeon entrance, and I got ahead of her by a couple screens. Then the message came up, and I was confused at first because I expected it to be bigger than it was. Still, it was a giant ol' King Ooze, and he dropped a ninja suit that I let my friend pick up. He wasn't that hard, just annoying.
Yeah, King Ooze can't get into as small a tunnel as you can, so you can just sit there with a flail and beat the shit out of him without being in any real danger.

Well I was already aware of the trick of digging a hole (and building wooden steps above it) and just attacking it from underneath. But we didn't ahve the coordination to arrange for that. We just jumped around like idiots hitting it with our molten maces and spears and shit. <.<
I think I want to make an elevated town, but what about the NPCs? Will they still be able to find their way up to the rooms? Will they keep falling off and die? Can I guard against this?
I got the Harpoon gun from the Goblin army last night. I am lead to believe that this is a fairly rare drop?
I am still pretty new to the game, but my friend has been playing for ages and says he has accquired pretty much everything there is, except the harpoon gun.
He asked me if we could trade. He wants to give me the "Blade of grass" in return. Is this a good deal or is he trying to swindle me out of the Harpoon? (which I find pretty hard to use anyway ... )
I only saw my first underground skeleton last night and that's the deepest I have ever been. Not seen a jungle yet and the corruption enemies kill me very quickly.
So, blade of grass is probably worth it for the time being. Especially since I don't really like the harpoon much. It can be a pain to use. - But if it's not worth keeping for any reason (it' doesn't craft into anything else?) I'll do the trade I think.

it is so much faster
although I think those require mana now
(I don't have a magic mirror yet)
There's nothing wrong with this approach. When you get a Magic Mirror you won't bother since you'll be able to set your spawn point wherever you want.
Are there any funtimes pvp servers around? I'd like to try my hand at it since I have EVERYTHING EVER now.

you can even set it to only show chests with specific items in them
Whoa, thanks!
Damn! I haven't even touched the surface! I'm like 10% deep so far.

Take advantage of it while you can: http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/blue-asks-saving-location-on-log-out-poll-discussion.40141/
I don't really have a preference, it's not like the death penalty is that horrible especially without much to spend money on at the moment.
Hopefully it'll be an option the way auto-pause is (and set by the admin in multiplayer).
EDIT: lol demolitionist just arrived. Sweet.

Nope. Bullshit. Basically the only thing that affects the chance of you being under a flying island is that they aren't immediately above your spawn.

I am apparently given to understand incorrectly
There is no evidence to support this in any way, and would require a huge amount of wasted effort that I don't see the developer actually doing.

you just need a silver broadsword and some roses and stingers from the jungle
I only saw my first underground skeleton last night and that's the deepest I have ever been. Not seen a jungle yet and the corruption enemies kill me very quickly.
