I know it sounds weird asking this in 2011 but I've never ordered anything online before so I need some advice on how everything goes down.
Specifically, its the actual delivery of the contents themselves that I'm lost at. I live in a low end apartment complex so would the items simply show up at my door or would it show up in the mail room or would I have to go to the post office to pick it up?
Depends on the company but mostly all the same. Since you live in an apartment, they typically buzzer you or knock on the door.
If you're not around, Canada Post / UPS / Fedex / Purolater all leave tags and tell you where to pick it up. Depending on the company, it's a close local place or a central location (there is 1 spot in Edmonton for Fedex, but Canada Post is just the closest office).
Unless Canada is different in this regard, typically the tags they leave let you specify that you want them to go ahead and leave the package at the door or behind a flower pot or whatever without signature on their next delivery attempt.
If you are going to order something very important, see if Fedex or DHL can do the delivery. Also, try buying from a reputable dealer or store. I have bought hundreds of items from Amazon.com with no problems, the only issue have been with third party sellers.

Does the apartment complex have an office that can accept packages for residents? I used to prefer that when I lived in apartments.
If this is an option, and if the staff will be around for you to pick up your packages when you need them - definitely the way to go.
Especially if you'll be ordering from Amazon and/or using UPS on a regular basis - if it's anything like the ones around here, their drivers can pretty much decide on a whim whether or not they feel like leaving your packages without a signature, past history or actual risk be damned.
I've been in your situation, and I don't trust Canada Post with delivery items to my door in my apartment. I give them the address of my dad, and he brings the item to me. Do you have a family member or friend who would mind getting this delivery sent to them?

Let me know if you add me on either.
Do you work someplace that would let you receive personal deliveries there? Anytime I order something I don't want left on my doorstep I have sent to my work so there's sure to be someone to sign for it, and so it will be kept someplace safe.
