    Wait, I just looked it up, and apparently Rainbow Brite is owned by Hallmark? A totally separate greeting card company from American Greetings?

    Mind blown. What do greeting cards have to do with cheesy 80's girls' cartoon franchises?

    It is still amusing though.

    What I liked about the previous one was that it was like a poster advertising it. This is just an image. It's a good image, but it doesn't have the same amount of meat.

    At the request of American Greetings, it was expunged from the online archives, and wasn't printed in the April 14th slot in volume 4, Birds Are Weird.

    But it's in the 11.5th Anniversary book. Even though that one's in low resolution, I'm not sure how they got it in there.

    Does anyone remember the Rainbow Bright movie and the jewel bitch throwing her favorite stone in the engine to save herself? I know it was an inanimate object but it just seemed extra bitchy.

    It seems odd to tart up 80s cartoons in response to a tarted up Alice in Wonderland. Wouldn't a slutty Dorothy Gale be more appropriate? Or how about Gulliver in assless chaps?

    There have been slutty Rainbow Brites forever. I've seen several Halloween costumes that have some unclever misspelling to avoid infringement. It's actually kind of odd. You these more than most other cartoons of our youth. I guess Rainbow just struck people as a closet nympho or something.

    Rainbow Brite was one of my favorite cartoons as a child. The idea that it was made exclusively for girls never dawned on me. It might be why I've become so charmed by the current My Little Pony cartoon.

    I liked old skool Rainbow Brite too, but I grew up in a house with three sisters, so there were lots of "girly" things around.

    Yeah. The visual depiction of Alice herself wasn't really too abnormal, just a bit creepy in the face.

    If I recall that movie actually had really high quality animation. The scenes with all the giant lizard men in the underground lake, and the tiny globs of liquid with faces that combined into what was basically that boss from mega man 2, were pretty memorable.

    Fuck me, I remember entirely too much about a 25 year old movie marketed to little girls.

    Does the term "tarted up" already convey the goth/emo 'edginess' that these mature re-imaginings all seem to have in common? Or does it need to be added, for example: A tarted up goth Alice, or a tarted up emo Dorthy?

    To tart yourself up is to dress up in more revealing or provocative clothing

    so you could wear goth clothing and have it not be revealing, but if it was 'tarted up' it would reveal more

    It would be highly problematic if Hallmark got in a stink over it, because I've been giving Hallmark my business ever since American Greetings lost it. Between the two they nearly have a duopoly on greeting cards.
