it reminded me of tfu, where he would sometimes deflect a blaster bolt with a casual hand gesture without really looking at it.

Hell yeah. I enjoy this newsletter, and would like to take out a subscription.
I'm going to make the sacrifice and be That Guy all the cool kids talk about when they say things like "Who fuckin plays Jedi in a Star Wars game? Really? Only noobs/kids/douches/<insert favorite put down that you think I'll give a shit about> play Jedi."
Go ahead. Feel haughty and proud that you made the "cool" decision to hate you some Jedi.
Meanwhile, I'll be grinning just like I did when I was 3, watchin Ep. IV and loving it.
I heard about the release date slip yesterday in the Darth Hater podcast. They were reviewing E3 and mentioned that it happened. It was funny to hear them stutter through trying to downplay it. Their argument went along the lines of "this is like the guy in your local gaming store telling you what he thinks the release date will be." No, actually it's not. That's a third party vendor. This is a rep of the company that makes the product to be sold concurrently with the release of the game. Razer is given a date by Bioware so they can prepare their product for release. The rep would have access to that information. One of the Darth Hater guys actually argued that a reason to discredit his slip is because English wasn't the rep's first language. Was pretty funny.
So I'd say November 3 or 4.
not really sure how much the DH guys know about the industry to be honest.
I used to help run a sports gaming web site, and i'd say at least a few times a year we'd find out the release date of a major sports title because a web site some where posted the date early.
Made up profanity is always, always lame as shit. It feels so hacky and corny.
I'm wondering that if you do power level to the end game, can you go back and do lower level quests? Or because you've pushed the story forward, nnnooooooopeeee.
the only exception IMO is the use of "frak" in all of its various forms in Battlestar Galactica.
Also, just skimming through the SWTOR.com forums and man, just as bad as WoW's forums, only in slightly different ways.
I get what people were saying about "half the people there just want to play SWG" or something. It's like the land MMO-progress forgot.
"I hope this game doesn't have any sites telling you how to best set up a character. There shouldn't be a best way to set up a character in this game!"
"This game is totally not gonna be gear dependent like lame-WoW"
"The community is gonna be so perfect and special and friendly"

I agree. While the concepts behind the politics of Star Wars (the fantasy politics, not real world) are interesting, I don't love star wars because of them. I imagined myself being Darth Vader (because he wasn't such a pussy about using the force, natch) as I walked to school. I want cool telekenetic powers and a lazer sword. I'll never be as hyped for another game as I was when the original jedi knight came out for the compter.
OMG WHAT DO U MEAN I CAN BE A JEDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was in the heyday of video game magazines, and I would go to the bookstore every week to see if there was any news. I also connected to the internet a ton to read about the game (no youtubey back then).

I am patiently waiting for the day when I can drive my AT-AT or walker over and wreck some stuff.
Until then what we have seen so far does look appealing.
Friday update should be up soon..
Granted, after all the leaks we've gotten there's really nothing spectacular left to reveal, but still.
I'm guessing another timeline update - they need to get cracking on those if they want them to be finished before release.

"So I was actually able to get into the current friends and family beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic. It wasn’t too hard since technically I do have a friend over there. The tricky part is that Bioware, like a lot of places thinks of PA as “media” and they don’t want media playing it yet. I explained that we aren’t media, we prefer to think of ourselves as “enthusiasts”. They let me in but I had to pinkie swear that I wouldn’t talk about the game here on the site, or anywhere else for that matter. I’ve been playing it for a little over a month now and last week I asked if I could share some of my impressions with you all. It took some begging but finally they agreed and to their credit they didn’t ask to see what I was going to write first. Honestly they had no idea what I was going to say which must have been a little scary considering this is PA, but lucky for them I actually really like their game. So this isn’t a review or anything even close. What I’m playing is the beta and honestly changing all the time. I just wanted to share some of my impressions.
First of all, a lot has been made about the new “fourth pillar” of story telling. Is it really all they are making it out to be? In my personal opinion, yes, it really is a big deal and let me tell you why. In the short time I’ve been playing SW:TOR I have already given more thought to my character than I ever did in all the years I played WOW. I’ve had to make hard choices with my Bounty Hunter that have made me honestly think about who he is and what he’s like. At first I intended to play him as a real asshole but some of the moral quagmires these quests put you in just aren’t that black and white. Do I do what gets me the most credits? Do I stay loyal to the person who gave me the job even it means hurting Innocent people? As a result of all this I have a character that is a hard ass bounty hunter who has a soft spot for people in trouble and children. The only thing I could tell you about my WOW character Dudefella is that he was a mage and a hell of a good dancer.
Of course all MMO’s now are going to have you taking quests but I think the big difference here is that I tend to care more about these quests. I will admit I am not a quest reader when I play an MMO. I click and click until it’s accepted and then read the breakdown on my way out to wherever the wolf bladders are. Playing a class in SW:TOR is like playing a single player Bioware game. People are talking to you and you’re deciding how to respond and making dialog choices. Turning the quests into an interactive experience makes me care a lot more about them. A quest is still a chance to get XP, money and loot but it’s also an opportunity to advance your character towards the dark or light side based on your decisions. In most MMO’s taking quests is what you do so that you can go play. In SW:TOR, taking quests is playing.
Obviously the setting is a big draw for me but I played the last Star Wars MMO and hated it. So just setting a game in the Star Wars universe isn’t enough for me. With that said I was curious if the Old Republic would be “Star Warsy” enough. I mean, we’re talking about 4000 years before the movies. Would that world look anything like the three films we all love? The reality is that I think it’s almost too much like the movies. It turns out that 4000 years before Jabba, the Hutts were still crime lords surrounded by Twi’lek dancers and had a habit of feeding people to exotic beasts. For the most part everything you expect to see in Star Wars is there and it hasn’t changed much if at all. I guess the idea is that the Star Wars universe has sort of plateaued. I could hazard a guess that the constant battle between the Jedi and the Sith have kept the universe in a perpetual state of either war or re-building...but if I said that I would be a huge nerd.
Anyway I can understand why they did it from a design stand point. They want people who are fans of Star Wars to feel at home here. The result is that it’s easy to forget that all this is taking place thousands of years before Luke Skywalker kissed his sister.
I’m hesitant to talk too much about the mechanics since like I said they really are changing all the time. I can say that coming over from WOW, it feels very familiar and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I’ve checked out the basics of most of the classes and they each feel unique. Dropping into cover with the smuggler gives you a whole new action bar similar to popping stealth with a rogue. At level 1 a Jedi Consular can tear a chunk of debris from the earth and hurl it at an enemy. Zapping the shit out of someone with force lightning is just as fun as you think. Firing up into the air with your jet pack and then raining missiles down on enemies does not get old. I will never get tired of slicing a guy in half with my lightsaber and then watching as my character lifts the blade over his head to block a blaster shot from behind without looking.
I don’t want to drill down into too much little stuff about the game but there is one feature I have to tell you about because I think it is really cool. If someone in your party is off grabbing quests while you’re selling junk at a vendor you would have to wait for them to share the quest with you later in any other game. In SW:TOR you get a little message that someone in your party is taking a quest and do you want to join via holoprojector. The first time I saw this I actually said out loud “Shit yeah I want to join via holoprojector!” and sure enough your character appears there in all his or her shimmering blue glory. You can interact with the NPC right alongside your partner. It’s a little touch but believe me when I tell you the game is full of smart little bits like this.
I honestly think they are making something unique and fun here. I’ve enjoyed my time in the beta even more than I expected and it just continues to improve. I’m excited to see what the final product ends up looking like and how people respond to some of its ideas.
On the "made up" dirty words issue: I still love the word, poodoo. A classic. Yeah its goofy and campy, but that's what makes it work. I love how Star Wars can embrace camp sometimes and make it work, case in point: C3PO.
As for what class I am leaning towards, definitely Smuggler and then Bounty Hunter.
As for the comment on the SW:TOR that the community is going to be special, actually if they have one or two RP servers designated as such, I wager the community is going to be quite awesome. Not without dickheads of course, but on aggregate, pretty damn cool. Many of the RPers I know in other games are chomping at the bit over this game and they will likely build a pretty awesome RP community.
I watched Episode IV last night, to renew my sense of purpose and remind myself why I love this film. I know its generally accepted that Episode V is the best, but for me, nothing hits a home run like the original film. It's a complete story, with a solid pace, not too fast, not too slow, and Alec Guinness is amazing. My only beef is the new crap they added in the 90's. Some of it is really horrible, I mean it has actually become more dated than some of the stuff from the 70's and in some cases also really ruins the pacing and editing of the original.
I know the thread title mentions not to talk about general SW, but I bring this up in reference to the game too. In the original IV, there's a real seedy quality to Tatooine. Is it possible Mos Eisley existed thousands of years ago? Because that port, just had a perfect "Casablanca" setting that I think I would thrive in as a RPer. Surely, if it isn't the game, some equivalent is right?
Also, its pretty clear in IV, that the Empire's disdain for Wookies is really high. I believe it has been mentioned in other EU stuff, that Wookies were particularly despised by the racist Imperial type folks. They were all racists, but the Wookies in particular were really hated. Did this concept exist in KOTOR too? Will it therefore extend to SW:TOR. I seem to remember it did when you visited Kasshyk (sp?). Also did anyone else think KOTOR did a better job designing the Wookie planet than the prequels did a few years later?

As I recall from KoTOR, you spent some time in a "Mos Eisley"-esque town there. Not sure if it was that exact Mos, but it had the feel.
That was Anchorhead, which is again going to be the main "base of operations" for players on Tatooine.
In KoTOR, they mention it's been settled and abandoned again and again for centuries. Don't know if that's true for other Tatooine towns as well.
The thing with made up curse words is, writers get so taken with them that they use them way more often than reads well or makes any sense. Like, yes firefly writers, you replaced the Ds in goddamn with Rs, that's very creative. I don't need it four times in every scene. Star wars does the same thing.

Combination of basic anti-alien racism with the whole noble savage vibe. That and wookiees being really physically strong I guess makes them nice slaves. They definitely had that vibe in there in KOTOR, although it was czerka doing the oppressing rather than the empire/sith. I'm sure it will still be around in SWTOR; bioware seems to like that trope.
Eat it You Nasty Pig. on
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

Wookiees can't go anywhere without being oppressed.
I tried playing as an Imperial Wookiee in SWG but like, all faction item costs were tripled. Good thing that game was a buggy mess and let me exploit a way to earn massive faction points so I could buy a personal AT-ST.

The video in the update gives a little more footage of the instance on Alderaan with Ulgo. Short with nothing really new, but cool to watch. I get tired of hearing Dallas Dickinson. There's something about his mannerisms that is annoying. Appreciate his production work so far though. Will even more when the game rocks on my computer.
I signed up for a free trial just to see what was going on, but then realized it was so intricate I had no idea what to do or where to go. I just wanted to be a jedi with a lightsaber, and had no idea where to go.
Which made me realize I'm excited for the story in ToR to just guide me along.

I tried playing as an Imperial Wookiee in SWG but like, all faction item costs were tripled. Good thing that game was a buggy mess and let me exploit a way to earn massive faction points so I could buy a personal AT-ST.
I didn't even bother checking what the update was.
It has gotten to that point.
Calm before the storm thankfully. The convention circuit is about to heat up and we're probably not far from a deluge of info.
Here's hoping that's the case anyway.
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (2017, colorized)
I only played it for like, 2 months or so, but the whole world they built up was amazing.
Terrible, grindy gameplay, but hey.
If there's still a free trial period, I guess I'm gonna play it again.
But yeah, that should definitely help TOR's subscription numbers. How many people are still subscribed to SWG? 100000 or so, right?
Which made me realize I'm excited for the story in ToR to just guide me along.
I did the same thing when it was part of a package on Steam. I got lost in the desert after trying to set out on my own abit. I walked for 45min trying to get back to a major city before turning it off and never logging back in again.
